The original purpose of the se¬ lected art classes was to provide greater flexibility in scheduling and to provide different course numbers for the students en¬ rolled in the art program for more than one year. The selected artist program is much more student directed as the area(s) in which the student will work are selected by the stu¬ dent and approved by the in¬ structor. It is e ssentially student directed and an independent type program There is a tre- metTdous responsibility on the student to produce quality art work The work that is completed during the year (by any student) can be exhibited and entered in various art competitions. The most prestigious award is to have work accepted in the State Superintendent ' s Annuai High School Art Show, If the work is selected as a winner, it is awarded a $200 purchase prize and becomes a part of the per¬ manent collection. Other exhibits during the year are the Congressional Art Show, the Carnegie Center Art Show, the Southeastern Washington Fair, ond new this year, the Su¬ perintendent ' s Art Show (School District 140). It is an honor to have work selected to be en¬ tered into any of these shows, and even more so if the entry is selected as a winner. Music Influences Fashion Without skepticism one can truly say Wa-Hi has its diversity among students ' dress and ap¬ pearance. The ' 85- ' 86 school year proved that in every respect. The most obvious A ould be in the students ' hair styles and dress. Students have numerous influ¬ ences on their apparel, the most popular influence being music whether it be heavy metal, punk, new wave, or country. Each takes on its own mode of expression. Other influential areas would be television shows, such as Miami Vice.” and popu¬ lar magazines such as Vogue” and GQ. If one was to remember any¬ thing about this school year, it might be the variety of personal¬ ities and how they influenced fads and fashions.
