November 26 in the Wa-Hi Commons. At 7 p.m., eight bands came together to treat the student body to a night of rock-n-roll fun. A good-sized crowd assembled to see students strut their stuff to the music of their choice. The au¬ dience was in store for music of all types, as well as costumes ranging from heavy-metal ma¬ keup and chains to surgical scrubs to black hats and shades. Easy Axcess, Kist, and Snowb- lind presented heavy-metal sourxJs to the music of Kiss, AC DC, and Ratt. The Unknowns played rock-n-roll with the tradi¬ tional paper-bag-over-the- head from Unknown Comic fame. The sizzlers — the only all¬ girl group — presented pop mu¬ sic, while the Blues Brothers gave a great performance with music from everyone ' s favorite funny¬ men. Weird Chuck, of course, be-bopped to Weird Al ' s tunes. The Air-Jam evening was not an actual competition — there were no judges and no winners or losers. Everyone Just got up there and had fun. The music for the Air-Jam was supplied by the Tri-Sigma and the drums were courtesy of Tim Phillips. The rest of the instru¬ ments were supplied by each group. Other countries represented were Ger¬ many, Mexico, Switzerland, and Yugoslavia. The students generally agreed that an interest in being a foreign exchange student was the initial step. Then either a test or on ap¬ plication was required. Most of the students ' parents contribut¬ ed to the individual programs in order to finance their child ' s year ' s stay in Walla Walla. How¬ ever, the host families received no payment from the program Students were enrolled at Wa- Hi in a regular academic pro¬ gram, Language barriers seemed to dissolve as most of the students spoke fluent English when they arrived Each lived with a Walla Walla family, some of whom had children at Wa-Hi. For the most part students spent the entire school year with one family, but some did change families mid-year. But, according to Mr. James Wamble, the fifth period class excelled so much during the first semester that it turned into an Advanced Drama 445 credit at the beginning of the second se¬ mester. During the ' 85- ' 86 season, a night of drama was produced once a month. On two occas- sions the drama classes invented their own skits and competed against each other in the Skit- Off, The winners were selected according to the audience re¬ sponse. The remainder of the productions were presented by the second period adva nced squad which only had 30 days to perfect a new play, This year was the best year so far, said Mr. Wamble. The Ad¬ vanced Drama classes have been very productive and in turn put out high quality perfor¬ mances. At the present time, 100 stu¬ dents were enrolled in the dra¬ ma classes. Mr. Wamble credits this to the fact that students like to get up and perform in front of others. Not only that, everyone gets a chance to act whether they are good, bad, or medio¬ cre. Mr James Wamble, drama instructor, ad¬ vises, “If you ' re going to be o performer, be o bold performer Jenny MrtcheH and Melcjrie Sowan pkay roles os grlfnerKte in Not Necessarily on Emergen¬ cy ' Tim LOTKlon. The selected artist program is much more student directed as the area(s) in which the student will work are selected by the stu¬ dent and approved by the in¬ structor. It is e ssentially student directed and an independent type program There is a tre- metTdous responsibility on the student to produce quality art work The work that is completed during the year (by any student) can be exhibited and entered in various art competitions. The most prestigious award is to have work accepted in the State Superintendent ' s Annuai High School Art Show, If the work is selected as a winner, it is awarded a $200 purchase prize and becomes a part of the per¬ manent collection. Other exhibits during the year are the Congressional Art Show, the Carnegie Center Art Show, the Southeastern Washington Fair, ond new this year, the Su¬ perintendent ' s Art Show (School District 140). It is an honor to have work selected to be en¬ tered into any of these shows, and even more so if the entry is selected as a winner. The ' 85- ' 86 school year proved that in every respect. The most obvious A ould be in the students ' hair styles and dress. Students have numerous influ¬ ences on their apparel, the most popular influence being music whether it be heavy metal, punk, new wave, or country. Each takes on its own mode of expression. Other influential areas would be television shows, such as Miami Vice.” and popu¬ lar magazines such as Vogue” and GQ. If one was to remember any¬ thing about this school year, it might be the variety of personal¬ ities and how they influenced fads and fashions. At Walla Walla High School, vocational education classes may lead directly to en¬ try-level employment or channel students into more advanced vocational education programs such as those offered by Walla Walla Community College. Vocational education gives students skills and knowledge for specific occupations. The main method of instruction is ' hands on ' experience, in a simulated work situation or an actual pb site. Vocational education is a practical alternative for youth who want immediate training for employment. It is ' paycheck training, ' designed for those who are ready to earn a living or fi¬ nance further education apply¬ ing vocational skills. When asked about future en¬ gagements, however, the group seems uncertain. Well, said saxophonist Ceci¬ ly Fuhr, we might ploy with the stage band in May, or we might go on the Queen Melba 1986 Southeastern Washington Jazz Wave Tour, or we might not. The hard facts are that we were 4 and 5, lost three games that we could have won - not should have - and ended up fifth in the league. Through it all this team possessed a winning fiber that bound every player and the coaching staff together in a fight for a common goal. They possessed that special personality and toughness that personifies winners and in the process set an example and standard for other Wa-Hi football teams to emulate in terms of just what being a member of a team and organization with commit¬ ments to a common goal are about. They personify what any organization tries to develop in order to be a suc¬ cess, whether it be an athletic team or in the business world. Football is a complicated game with a few simple rules. It ' s not for everybody and you must be tough physically and mentally to make it. The lessons that are taught daily in football are the very roots of human life, joy, laughter, humil¬ ity, loyalty, responsibility, pressure, pain, etc. This 1986 football team and its coaches faced it all together. We cele¬ brated our victories and suffered our losses together and in the process be¬ came increasingly aware of what it means to be a TEAM. A misfired field goal, an untimely inter¬ ception, o fumble on the four - short trite statements that mean very little to the average reader but virtually wrap up an entire season for our football team and its coaches, We have to ask ourselves where is the limit of a player coach? Did we play and coach above our abilities to get as close as we did or could we collectively tried a little harder and been a little better—good enough to win the close ones! I Where is it in life that we can soy: “I gave all I could and it wasn ' t enough Yet we know that in life it ' s the getting up after we have been knocked down that is the real test of a person ' s values, and really to win or lose isn ' t even an issue. The boys ' team worked hard but the transfer of four key runners caused them to struggle to a 2-9 record. There was a bright spot on the boys ' team however as Kieth Parkins ran among the best in the Big 9 all season, Kieth was Wa-Hi ' s lone entry in the state meet where he finished a very strong 24th in a field of 135 state qualifiers. No State veterans, no Regional veterans. Indeed, only two returnees who had competed in the District tour¬ nament of a year ago. Experience was a luxury no Blue Devil had. They were a rookie” bunch. An early season goal was to improve with every week; to gain the respect, if not the defeat of our opponents. Let the record show that these Blue Devils achieved that goal. With a team con¬ sisting of four seniors, four juniors, and five sophomores, they met the best of three states. Not many matches were won; not one was surrendered. We were outskilled or physically dominated; we were not out fought. Senior leadership was much needed by this young group. Senior leadership was well provided. Keith and Dale as¬ sumed the responsibility from the first day. In practice, on trips, and during competition they provided the guid¬ ance and support that this young group needed to grow. Gary gave us that special twinkle to keep us loose and keep it fun when it seemed that all there was to wrestling was gruelling workouts. The value of our seniors con¬ tributions was important to this young team. This team will continue to see that value grow as it matures. Thanks. What of that youth? They learned a lot. They learned that nothing is free in the world of competitive wrestling. They learned that successful wrestlers all pay the price. They learned they don ' t like to lose. The question that remains. Live got under¬ way Saturday night December ' 14th in the commons. The fun- filled evening was sponsored by Mac Bledsoe ' s homeroom which profitted $6M to go towards a new wheelchair for Bill Groom. The evening got fired-up with Kiss the Pig contest. Unfortu¬ nately because of cold weather a guinea pig was substituted. Any homeroom could pick their own representative and raise money. The rooms who collect¬ ed the most money sent their re¬ presentative to Kiss the Pig. The participants happened to be Kevin Sullivan from Mr. Tom¬ lin ' s homeroom and Mac Blesoe. The Pie in the Face contest followed, Mr. Neher, Mr, Bledsoe, Casey Clark, and Steve Sutton were the contestants, by means of students who contributed the most money to their favorite person. The students seemed to have taken a great interest in Mr. Neher who raised $28.50 and left Casey Clark pie-free. Also the popular ' Gong Show ' was hefd. Appearing were Ed Reese, playing his synthesizer; Casey Clark, doing a whistling act; Mac Bledsoe, makir g his de¬ but with his harmonica; and the band Krystal playing hit songs. Krystal came away with a score of 26 to win. Unfortunately Mac was the only one to be gonged. Judges were Mr. Gregg Garland. Mrs. Evelyn Gau, and Mr. Dick Cook. Tom Fox, Ruben Mendoza, Chris Lacey, Sadie Revels, and Aaron Anderson made up the squad of Mr. Wa-Hi challeng¬ ers. Ruben Mendoza created an Incredible Hulk out of himself (somehow) and collected the most dofxitions to win the trophy and title ' Mr. Wa-Hi. Record Overall ' 4-6 League-3-5 I istrict-6th State-tied for 8th This was a very excitmg season with the most excitement coming at the State Track meet when Libby Tyson set two school records on her way to winning both the 1600 and 3200. It is very rare for one person to be able to win both of these events in one year Another exciting part of the season was the amount of school records that were broken, a total of nine. The oldest record, the discus, set in 1975 was shattered by Cheryl Hills with a throw of 123 9”. Some of the records were broken more than once. One of these was the 400 meters which hadn ' t been broken since 1979 but Kay Knowles and Renee Chamberlain took turns breaking the record. Ultimatelv thev wound up at 8 3 and in sole possession of third place. It was a fine year for a team effort. Like 1985, the 1986 track team relied upon depth to score highly m dual meet competition. Often it was the second and third place finishers that proved to be the margin for victory. The addition of Harvey Wellington to the staff brought new drive and enthusiasm to the team to bolster the steady production of quality distance runners by Ron Hunting ton. This was a truly eidting team which is now undefeated in two years at home. As the season drew to a close the Big Nine competition became fierce for this year only the first place finishers went to state. The Blue Devils again sent two competitors to the state meet in Tacoma. For the Second year in a row Wa Hi had the top discus thrower at district when big Ron Koester threw the discus 157 8’ for first place and a new school record. He went on to place fifth at state for the culmination of a truly fine high school career, Ernest Aldridge, a first year senior trackster, placed first at district with a jump of 21 8 Vi ’ to earn a trip to state where he placed eleventh out of a field of 18 of the state ' s top jumpers. Also, in a mirror of last year, a soph- more, Jerry Marshal], was voted the most valuable athlete. Brock Krebs was selected as the honorary team captain for his fine leadership, ott McQelland was voted most inspirational for his always Gutty performance in the 400 and his electrifying finishing in the 4 k 400 relay. The 1986 season closed with a strong senior class of leadership and exciting performances followed by a very aggressive group of underclassmen gobbling up points behind them. 1987 looks to be even brighter for the Blue Devils. Evidence supporting this is, we lost four 1 run games and went 11 innings in another before losing 11-4. But this year was filled with more positive hap¬ penings than negative Among those were a winning season for the first time in a decade; sending 4 players (John Golden, John Kopf, Kirk Harper, Derek Tyler) to the state all-star feeder game; and two players (Kirk Harper- 1st team and Derek T yler-Honorable Mention) receiving All Conference re- cognition. (Not pictured: Sharon Bryarly, Heather Herion, and Sarah Sameh.) The 1986 softball season saw a turnout of 48 players, most of whom were sophomores and juniors. The varsity squad was cut 16 players for the opening of the season and then reduced to 15 when one quit. Of the 15 varsity players, there were only 4 seniors: Lynda Laughery, Lana Henderson, KeUie Bunch and Heidi Daniels. This young team started off the season by opening at Lewiston, Idaho, playing with a smaller ball, different rules and promptly lost both games. Next came the other two non-league games with the Hanford Falcons The Blue Devils played well, but were de¬ feated again in both games. Throughout the season the team continu¬ ed to improve until they were competitive with everyone they played. At the end of the season, the team deadlocked with Wenat¬ chee and Davis for a tie for seventh place. The Blue Devils played well in the playoff game, outhitting Wenatchee 14-8 but lost the game in the sixth inning by a score of 9-8 to end the season. With 11 seasoned ve¬ terans returning and a powerful group of sophomores on the JV team, the coming sea¬ son of 1987 looks very promising.
