Facing the challenge of replacing 10 defensive starters and 9 offensive starters and a first week by, the 1981 Blue Devil football team took on the best in the state as they fought their way to a respectable 4 4 season and a fourth place finish in what many have called the “toughest league in the state.’’ After an opening loss to Ka- miakin in the closing seconds, the young Blue Devils were impressive in their next three outings. With a 22-0 win over Moses Lake and a hard fought 6-0 win over Davis, the Devils prepared to take on a Senior laden Pasco team who had been picked to be one of the playoff contenders. A fast maturing offense and a stingy defense made their mark as the Blue 140 Devils ‘‘blew ihcm away” with an im¬ pressive 33-0 victory. With an offen¬ sive team that was leading the league and defensive team which was second in total yds allowed opponents, the Devils prepared for the “meat” of their schedule. The next three weeks found them on the “short end” as they lost to both state-ranked Kennewick and eventual state champions Rich¬ land and finally always tough Wenat¬ chee. Needing a win at their final game to be five hundred, the Blue and White of Wa-Hi entertained a large crowd which featured the introduc¬ tion of senior parents at the tradition¬ al “Senior Night” as both the offense and defense were most impressive in a 39-7 win over Ike. Individual and team honors were many, as a total of 8 records were broken, and eight players earned 1st, 2nd and Honorable Mention All Con¬ ference recognition. Traditional ac¬ tivities such as the Guardian Angel Kidnap Breakfast; Pizza feed and Homecoming became bigger than ever, while new ones like the “Rib eating” contests, fash¬ ion show, and Tuesday night Football on channel 13, featuring the Wa-Hi Blue Devils, made it a great and suc¬ cessful football season. The season ended as a crowd of parents, players, coaches and fans were entertained at the annual football banquet at the Elks Lodge. Letters, awards and spe¬ cial recognitions were handed out to the players and cheerleaders. Con¬ gratulations are in order to our great seniors who by their personal commit¬ ment to being the best they could pos¬ sibly be, and to our Juniors, who played key roles in a senior dominated league, committed themselves to a winning effort. A special thanks to our cheerleaders whose hard work and a dedication to being the best be¬ came the “CLASS OF THE LEAGUE ’. Let it be known that the personal growth of our players and cheerleaders, the working together for a common goal in a positive envj ronment, has made this 1981 football season a tremendous success. The season was highlighted by a rst place finish in the Exchange Club Tournament and a second place finish in district, with an exciting and emotional victory over Kamiakin 42- 41 which sent our team onto the Re¬ gional Tournament. Although the girls fell 7 points short or making it back to State, they did manage to play very well in the Regional Tournament, beating Gon- zaga Prep 61-49 before losing to a tough Shadle Park team, 57-64, This year ' s team graduates five hardworking senior players and one dedicated trainer. They are Annette Bergevin, Shari Brown, Sherry Hop- pen, Karla Krebs, Lori McMunn, and Stephanie Swyter, But next year will find a talented group of returning varsity and jr var¬ sity members. Our 14-9 win-loss record is indicative of the type of season wc had. Included in our losses were two one-point losses to Davis and Kennewick and a forfeit to Kamiakin. We could have very easily been 17-6, with a little luck. I think the seniors can look back on the season and know they did a credit¬ able job. Not too many Wa-Hi bas¬ ketball teams have had two victory seasons over Richland and Pasco. Those two road victories over Pasco and Richland were definitely the highlights of the season. I really think that this year’s basketball team can be proud of the fact that they pro- ' vided some very exciting basketball for Wa-Hi fans this year. Jim Thacker Varsity Basketball Coach 167 JOE CANTRELL TEAM CAPTAIN CRAIG WOOD It was a year of Golden Moments, Who will forget the dominance of Bri¬ an Humphreys at North Idaho? Who can forget the determination of Joe Cantrell? in the Wa-Hi Invita¬ tional? The desire of Brad Rude to come back from an injury to make it to the State Tournament will be remem¬ bered always. The hard rock dependence the team could put on Jeff Helm will insure his place in the annals of Wa-Hi wres¬ tling history. These were the Varsity Seniors. Tliey have been devoted. They have been leaders. They will be missed. What of the others? Early on in the season it was apparent that it would be a building year. Three weight classes to forfeit were too RICH BURROWS many. What could they accomplish? Plenty It was not in them to be dis¬ couraged and quit. They were not content to bear the burden and wait until next year. They did not learn to accept defeat without a whimper. They fought. They worked. They got better. What now? It ' s all up to them. How much can they remember. They didn ' t like to loose, but how much didn ' t they like to lose? What can they do to insure that it will be differ¬ ent? Some have already started. There is no secret to success. Work is the key. Committment is the answer. Desire can conquer all. The nucleus for the future is there. 1981-2 was of Golden Moments: 1982-3 can be a year of Gold.
