Moses Lake 15 45 With the anticipation of being a contender in the race for the Big Nine title and being tabbed the challenger to Richland and Wenatchee ' s dominance in the league, the 1976 Scott Christensen fighting Blue Devils entered the football season with pride and confidence. An opening loss Brent Hudgins in overtime to the tough Davis Pirates and successive wins over Pasco and Kennewick set EriC Johnsof the stage for a “do or die battle with league-leading and 7th ranked Richland. A last second field goal was good for Wa-Hi, handing the Bombers their first loss of the season. The next week found the Devils 10th in the State AP Poll and preparing for a home encounter with the Wenatchee Panthers, which would probably decide the league title and a trip to the State playoffs. A dose but disappointing loss to Wenatchee before a record crowd virtually eliminated Wa- Hi from the championship, but the Devils came back with wins in the remaining four games to end the 1976 season with a proud and enviable 7-2 record, and a four game winning streak Thanks to the Senior football players who gave to Walla Walla High School a tradition of success, a 7-2 record, a four game winning streak and a realization that to play football at Wa-Hi is more than just a game on Friday night. It ' s a commitment to the school, to the community, to the fans and to all those who have worn the Blue and White before and will wear it in the years to come. It ' s a commitment to oneself and a dedication to others to stand tall, to have some class and to create within that driving will to succeed and be a “winner Scott Hoover Tony Taylor . Urry Sthultj 47 Wa-Hi ' s sophomore team finished its season with a 3-3 record. The team ' s last game with Moses Lake was cancelled. The team played well in all of its games, except the Pasco game. They progressed a long way from its opening 7-0 win over Davis to its final 27-20 victory over Kamiakin. Many of these Sophomores will be helping to make next year ' s Varsity program a success. A handful of hard¬ working senior lettermen turned out, but only a few had varsity experience from last year ' s state tournament team. The balance of this year ' s squad was composed of seven juniors. Consequently, this year ' s team, green and inexperienced, tallied a dismal 3-13 record in the tough Big Nine Conference and a 3- 17 season record. Injuries throughout the season to seniors Jul Winston and Bob McDowell; juniors Jeff Sasser, Steve Sigurdson, and Scott Aichelle; plagued the unity of the team all year. Despite everything, every player worked hard and never gave up. I would like to thank those graduating seniors: Mike Heifer, Pat Witt, Paul Noble, Larry Schult 2 , and Bob McDowell. The juniors, composed of Stu Clem, Pat McKeown, Mike Groff, Mike Lundgren, Steve Ford, Steve Sigurdson, Jeff Sasser, and Scott Aichele, will make a strong nucleus from which to work. Such was not the case. The record this team achieved was a measure of the experience that they began the season with. It was by no means a measure of their dedication or determination. They need no excuses for their record; they were a young group and a proud group and to accept any excuse would fall below their dignity and self-respect. Their youth will work to their advantage. The 1976-77 record will be more a test of their determination than it is a permanent record of their season ' s success. Attitude is the key, and to this point it hats been a strength of this young group. For the Seniors all that is left is memories; some good, some bad, all meaningful and to be cherished. Their records and individual feats will live forever in the history and tradition of Blue Devil wrestling. They will never be replaced, but instead substituted for, A sincere thanks to them from the WA-HI state champions of the future. 56 Mark Sprtngel Jeff Black Cisco DeLaRosa MOST IMPROVED 57 KEN LANGIS 101 TOURNAMENT PLACINGS: DISTRICT— Ken Langis-first-(101 Tony Dague-third-(108) Joe Parker-fifth-(122) John Khcker-fifth-(129) Cisco DelaRosa-sixth-(135) Jeff Black-fourth-(168) Mark Sprengel-fifth-(178) REGIONAL— Ken Langis-third- 101 Tony Dague-fourth-(108) STATE—Ken Langis-third-(lOl) TONY DAGUE 108 SCOREBOARD WA-HI 18 DAVIS WA-H! 12 LEWISTON WA-HI 28 KAMIAKIN WA-HI 44 PULLMAN WA-HI 23 PASCO WA-HI 42 WENATCHEE WA-HI 31 KENNEWICK WA-HI 33 HERMISTON WA-HI 21 EISENHOWER WA-HI 24 MAC HI WA-HI 24 MOSES LAKE WA-HI 42 WEST VALLEY WA-HI 27 SHADLE PARK WA-HI 16 LEWIS CLARK WA-HI IS RICHLAND 36 39 27 9 30 18 30 29 35 34 33 23 32 35 36 VOLLEYBALL Coach Leslie Stockton Charlene Bowers VARSITY VOLLEYBALL FRGNT ROW: Charlene Bowers, Sue Larson, Sandy Krebs and Shannon Haun ROW 2: Coach Charlotte Wirth, Lorna Helburg, Beth Woods, Jennifer IV)cFall, Sheryl Bowers, Jeannte Eggart and Assistant Coach Leslie Stockton. They made a community service trip to Dixie, Washington where they visited with an elderly lady, plus helped her clean up her lawn. They paid a visit to one group in Zillah, Washington and had some fun exchanging ideas with them. Also, they hosted a conference of different VICA groups here where one of their members, the REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT, Larry Munnick, did the opening and closing ceremonies contests with other state elected officers. The loss of nine graduating seniors could leave the Devils a bit shallow on experience for their 1978 debut. Among the seniors departing the Blue Devils was Most Valuable Player, Don Burt, who hit 400 on the season and led the team in stolen bases (12) and R.B.I. (1 8). Team Captain, Mike Heifer, and the ace of the mound- staff for three years (18-5) and Most Inspirational Player, Jack McNulty, certainly will be missed by Coach Karp and his staff. These players, like all the graduating seniors, played an important role in 1977 Blue Devil Baseball.
