T£RVilC€ COURTS There are two programs available for Wa-Hi students who are interested in earning credit as student assistants One program at the Sequin, Paine, elementary, and junior high schools is coordinated by Doris Smith, Wa-Hi Counselor Objectives of the program are to tram for responsibility on a job to develop an awareness of the job area to provide assistance to the professional staff, and to assist the student »n developing skills necessary to function in a helping relationship . Final selection of students for this pro¬ gram is made by the building principal and or supervisor Many students have been required to participate in a person¬ al interview The program is open to all students with a bonafied interest Students in Ed I are primarily assigned to various elementary and secondary teachers as student assistants In ad¬ dition to working as assistants. Ed I students are also expected to act as students during the sessions of the Whitman Micro-teaching clinic and may be given an opportunity to work as supervisors at Camp Wooten Each class also meets once a month in the classroom for seminar sessions on various educational topics and issues of the day

ENGLISH The English program at Wa-Hi is designed to meet the needs of every student relative to his needs and ability Skills and background are offered in four major areas: Composition. Reading. Literature and Special Interest courses Ail So phomores. Juniors and Seniors may register for any course in any area depending on their interest and ability Composition courses include Basic Grammar, Grammar and Composition. Creative Writing and Vocab and Comp The students may choose to register for Basic Reading. Intermediate Reading or Advanced Reading Literature selections range from Basic Lit to American, World or English Literature and Greek Mythology Special Interest Courses include Speech, Drama. Communications and Journalism 6

The TSE Department at Walla Walla High School has to accept a broad responsibility for persons to walk near, ride in and operate vehicles How well participants actually use the highway transportation system becomes a concern of this department The Traffic Safety Education program began at Wa-Hi in 1 946 with A1 students The program now provides instruction for over 600 students yearly The TSE program consists of three phases of instruction: classroom, simulation and in-car instruction taught by a certified staff of three full-time instructors The program is offered to all high school age people in the community Nearly 100% of the eligible high school students take the course because of the need to have a motor vehicle operator ' s license in this agricultural and recreational community 8
