White lace and promises A kiss for luck and we re on our way Talking it over just the two of us Working together day to day to¬ gether Before the rising sun we fly. Skip Drew was not pleased with the number of mistakes which gave Wa Hi thirteen penalties and took away 127 yards However Moscow lost 128 yards on nine penalties so that ' s some consolation The Devils finished with 192 yards on the ground, 108 of which were thanks to fullback Norm Conaway Atr yardage was limited by the fact that Ken McBride completed only one of 1 5 passes The single TO of the game occurred when Wally Hartwell blocked a Moscow punt from their 18 yard line and Brannan landed on it in the in-zone for a Wa-Hi score with 6 08 left in the 3rd quarter Later in the same quarter. Wa Hi drove from our 10 to Mos¬ cow’s 11, but the Devils turned the ball over on downs Twice the Devils held close to their goal Moscow flew to the 10 and later the 6 yard line Mike Johnson saved Wa Hi from a tie by tackling a Moscow runner from behind on the 10 yard line For the first time in 10 games. Wa Hi lost to Pendleton with a final score of 14-7 Last year Wa-Hi won 41 20 Wa- Hi drove Pendleton to the 33 but Pendleton promptly drove back and gained a TD from the 14 Pendleton almost made it 14 0 with their next play, but their quarterback tripped on the 5 yard line Wa-HTs lone goal came courtesy of a Pendleton fumble that gave the Devils the ball After several plays and a one yard bullying by Mike Johnson. Wa-Hi made their 6 points It was simply a matter of Davis being out-classed as the Devils stuck them 38-0 for an expected win Mike Johnson created the first scoring situation by intercepting Davis ' s pass at the 29 and carrying it to the 10 On the second play after that. Johnson swept 8 yards for the first score then kicked the extra point for a 7 0 lead Wally Hartwell set up the next score when he blocked the Davis punt, putting it out of bounds at the 26 It took six plays before Johnson could make it 3 yards to gam his second TD When Davis s quarterback fumbled. Hartwell smothered the ball and eight plays later Johnson bullied his way to a TD from the 1 Then Whaley blocked a Davis punt and Bruce Walker carried it seven yards to the Davis 25 Even with a penalty holding them back a little, the Devils scored from the 29 on a McBride to Johnson pass After losing the ball on a fumble, the Devils stopped a minor threat by Davis and packed the ball 80 yards; 52 by Plucker. 1 7 on another McBride to Johnson pass with Plucker taking the final two for the TD The reserves took the last TD with Gary Gom accounting for the final six points In a game that was more or less predicted, the Devils lost to Wenatchee 27 0 Wa-Hi started out very well on the opening kickoff by marching 51 yards in the Panthers defense But McBride fumbled at the 20 and Wenatchee took over — once on a 28 yard pass and then on a field goal Then Mike Johnson was nailed hard and put out of the game This hurt the Devils rather badly Wenatchee tried passing, but Ray Moreno and Scott Plucker intercepted two of them The Devils managed to get as far as the Panthers 3 yard line, but time ran out before anything could be done with it After losing 27 0 to Wenatchee, the Devils weren ' t in much of a mood to play football with Eisenhower, or so it seemed, with the final score standing at a 13-6 loss for Wa Hi Except for one TD by Ike there wasn ' t much action until the fourth quarter when Wa Hi ' s passes kept flying into Cadet hands Our chance came when Johnson recovered a Cadet fumble at the Cadet 1 6 Four plays fa ter. Conaway blasted 2 yards for six points A try for a two point conversion run was stopped short After some disappointing developments, Wa-Hi finally scored in the 4th quarter for a 1 3 0 win over Kamiakin First an 87 yard run failed to yield a TD then a 50 yard punt returned to the goaf line was nullified by a clipping penalty which set us back 25 yards But Ken McBride hit Steve Crudup in the end zone with a 25 yard TD pass Johnson ' s extra point kick was blocked so the score became 6-0 Crudup inter¬ cepted the Braves first play after the TO at the Wa-Hi 46 and proceeded to carry the ball to the Kamiakm 34 Mike Johnson scrambled around left end on the next play and gave the Devils their second TD in 43 seconds of play The final score stood at 1 7 to 14 m a rather disappointing game for Wa-Hi At first Pasco ' s Bulldogs thought the going might be easy after a field goal put them on the scoreboard with a 3-0 lead but the Devils wereo t too ready to be beaten Wa-Ht capitalized on a flubbed kickoff which put us at the Pasco 30 After three unsuccessful plays. Keith Gradwohl fired a screen pass to Norm Conaway that earned the Devils to the 12 Conaway then crashed through Pasco ' s defense for the TD and Mike Johnson converted for a 7-3 lead Conaway halted a Pasco scoring threat with an inter ception. but the Bulldogs soon racked up several big passing gams which gave them a 1 7-7 lead over the Devils But when Wa-Hi recovered, quarterback McBride hit Steve Crudup twice for 50 yards and a Pasco penalty put McBride in position to score putting the score at 17-14 From that point both defenses kept themselves at bay to prevent any further scoring Wa-Hi ' s game was almost totally on the ground in contrast to Moses Lake s flying game m a 22 -15 victory for the Devils This game marked the 5th straight win over Moses Lake Our first try was dropped on the goal line but the second quarter saw Norm Conaway bulling his way to the goal on a fourth down to leave the score 7 0 at the half Both Crudup and Dan Johnson intercepted Moses Lake ' s passes to thwart those scoring threats Then Moses Lake charged in the third quarter and scored a 30 yard pass with a 2 point pass conversion to put the score at 8 7 Moses Lake On Wa-Hls next touchdown. Mike Johnson led the way with a 38 yard run to the Moses Lake 32 A couple of plays later. Graybeal popped 19 yards for the touchdown Conaway played the Moses Lake game and ran for a two point conversion, makmg the score 1 5 8 It look seven plays for the Devils to make a touchdown from the Chiefs 37. but Johnson ripped off 22 yards and then 12 for the touchdown, then he kicked the conversion for 22-8 lead over Moses Lake Wa-Hi stopped the Chiefs at the 1 9 when they became too anxious Then we dropped the ball at the Chiefs 46 and they passed to a touchdown and lowered the margin to 7 points From here, though, it was simply a matter of using up time for Wa-Hi even though the Devils came within 2 yards of another touchdown Kennewick made history with our final home game by beating the Devils 14 13 at Borleske For the first time in recorded Wa- Hi football history the Irons beat Wa-Hi at Borleske Stadium It was also the first win out of 12 games by the Lions against Wa- Hi It was |ust a poor game for the Devils Kennewick got in the first goal for six points as they missed the conversion Conaway took the ball 39 yards for a touchdown and 7 points after Kennewick gave the Devils a perfect playing position In the second half Kennewick made 8 points on the next touchdown using a passing conversion Conaway gave Wa-Hi a chance by intercepting a Lion pass and carrying it to the 37 After 6 plays. McBride hustled the ball eight yards for a touchdown Rather than go for a safe tie the Devils took a chance and toed for a running conversion but Conaway was caught short of the goal line It is odd that although Wa-Hi lost we had more yardage - 1 56 compared to 1 33 and more first downs 8 to 7 Wa-Hi ' s game was a little slow against Richland as our only TD came as a result of Mike Johnson s running speed after nabbing a pass from Keith Gradwohl That play alone counted for 84 of Wa-Hi s 92 yard offensive total This compared to Richland ' s 246 yards, made it easy to see that Wa-Hi ' s trouble was simply getting the move on - all in all a disappointing way to end a football season Every fall football awards are handed out to the outstanding football players of the previous season at a special sports award dessert This year ' s honored players were Norm Conaway. Wally Hartwell Mike Johnson. Scon Plucker, and Bob Wissenback Conaway received the Chuck Anderson memorial award for defen se. Hartwell received the award for the Most Improved Senior.
