Moreno goes for an end sweep- M ilc-Hell meets Ills equal. The opening game of the season was the Shrine Benefit game with Richland providing the opposition. The game was ragged with the usual opening game mistakes. It w as highlighted when tackle Gary LeValley scored his first and only touchdown of his career. 1 he Devils played extremely well against Pendleton, w ho later finished third in Oregon State play offs. With four minutes gone in the second quarter the score read 28-0 w ' ith Wa-Hi ahead. At this point the first team retired and the subs took over. Dave Bateman behind the fine blocking of Lon Wyriek, Gary Le Valley and J im Watt, had an excellent game, gaining 11 1 yards on six carries and scoring two touchdowns. Next came the powerful Kennewick Lions. They were defending co-champions of the Big 8 and were favored to take it again. Trailing 6-0 at half time, the Devils charged back behind the defensive efforts of Chuck Eisele, Ken Olsen and Jock Morrison. The Devils Kelt! the Lions score¬ less and went on to score 20 points with excellent blocking by the entire offensive line. For their next game the Devils traveled to Yakima to battle Eisenhower. For the first time in many seasons, the Blue Devils put together a good game in Yakima and smashed the Cadets 35-6, The offensive line led by Mike Wagner thoroughly dominated the line of scrimmage, offering excellent protection and ripping open gaping holes for the Blue Devil backs to charge trhough. Dave Bateman gained 108 yards in the first half and didn ' t play in the second. Doug h ilan scored three touchdowns, one a 7 yard bomb fired by Mike Mitchell, Behind that excellent protection, Joe Moreno, Dan McCauley and a host of sophomores performed well. Davis was the opposition for the Homecoming game. It was a bitterly fought contest played in the mud. The de¬ fense was again spearheaded by Chuck Eisele who con¬ sistently came up w ith the l ig play. Frank Hanson and Mike Minnich did a good job defensively in containing the Pirates, Mike Mitchell scored the only touchdown on a 36 yard quarterback sneak. The Devils came aw ay 7-0 victors. I he sixth ranked Devils next ran up against the top ranked Wenatchee Panthers in Wenatchee, The Blues made too many mistakes and the Panthers, just as the Devils had been doing all season, capitalized on them. Wa-Hi suffered their only loss of the season 27-7. Moses Lake provided the next opposition for the last home game of the 1970 season. 1 he defense led this time by the Moreno brothers ami Jock Morrison held the Chiefs score¬ less as the offense forged out 21 points and came away victorious 21 -0. The Devils next traveled to Pasco for what proved to be the battle for second place in the Big 8. The Big Blues scored first after Mike Wagner recovered a fumble on the Pasco 7 yard line. Behind 7-0 Pasco battled hack to the lead 8-7 on a touchdown and two point conversion. Just as the first half came to a close, quarterback Mike Mitchell uncorked a perfect strike to Doug Filan for a 57 yard touchdow n pass and run. I hr Bulldogs again scored and added the two poi n ter, W i t h t h rec■ m i n u t es s h t)w i n g, t he Devils put together their finest drive of the year. Mitchell connected with Minnich, Hanson and Bateman, and Joe Moreno ate up ground behind great trap blocking of guards Wyriek and Wagner. The line provided Dave Veley with excellent protection as the kicks blooped through the goal posts for three points and a great come from behind for a 17-1 6 victory. For the season finale, the Devils traveled to Richland and put together the finest game of the season. Chuck Streamer played the best game of his career. He set up the first touchdown by forcing a fumble recovered by Chuck Eisele. Dave Bateman and Joe Moreno teamed up for the most productive rushing attack of the year. Bateman for 101 yards and three touchdowns: Moreno ground out 100 yards and 12 points. Chuck Eisele, Mike Wagner and Jim Watt consistently opened the holes and Doug Filan made many key blocks. The Devils won 33-7. At the awards banquet Lon Wyriek and Dave Bateman were named co-captains, Lon was also outstanding lineman and Dave was most inspirational. Ken Olsen was named the most improved lineman. Mike Wagner, Chuck Eisele, Gary LeValley, Joe Moreno and Dave Bateman were also named to the all-conference team. Dave Bateman was later named to the all-state team. The season was a fitting climax for the tremendous record of Head Coach Felix Fletcher. 19

HOMECOMING QUEEN AND COURT-FRONT ROW: Queen H rat her Cowan. ROW 2: Chuck Eisele, Debbie Richardson, Ken Olsen, Drena Jensen. Kiny Dave Bateman, Terri Pringle, Lon Wyrick, Mary Jo Martin. Chuck Streamer. Homecoming was another exciting event during the school year. It was held October 5-10; and. as in past homecomings, numerous sales were held by various organizations on campus. Organized activities were put into effect by the students. First the garbage day speech contest was held, followed by class competition, and the student- faculty tug-of-war. Pre-game activities included the serpentine, the bonfire, and the noise parade. The highlight of homecoming was the game and dance. The game was won by a score of 7 to 0. The theme of this year ' s dance, “Hurry Sundown”, appropriately ended a great week. 20
