The Associated Student Body of Walla Walla Htyh School Pments The 1968 Royal Blue Looking Thtongh The Seasons Roberge Photo AN AUTUMN SONG There is something in the Autumn that is native to my blood, Touch of manner, hint of mood; And my heart is like a rhyme, With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time. The scarlet of the maples can shake me like a cry Of bugles going by. And my lonely spirit thrills To see the frosty asters like smoke upon the hills. There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir; We must follow her, When from every hill aflame, She calls and calls each vagabond by name. —Bliss Carman AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL 0 beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! —Katharine Lee Bates One must have a mind of winter To regard the frost and the boughs Of the pine-trees crusted with snow; And have been cold a long time To behold the junipers shagged with ice, The spruces rough in the distant glitter Of the January sun; and not to think Of any misery in the sound of the wind, In the sound of a few leaves, Which is the sound of the land Full of the same wind That is blowing in the same bare place For the listener, who listens in the snow, And, nothing himself, beholds Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is. —Wallace Stevens 7 SUNSET Where ships of purple gently toss On seas of daffodil, Fantastic sail ors mingle, And then —the wharf Is still. —Emily Dickinson FRAGMENT Flower in the crannied wall, I pluck you out of the crannies, I hold you here, root and all, in my hand, Little flower —but if l could understand What you are, root and all, and all in all, I should know what God and man is. —Alfred Tennyson 9 A 12 JIM GARRISON, WRAY GENE CHASE, PAM TALBOT, KAREN GLOVER, DEBBIE PRINGLE KATHY RHODDA, KAREN RHODDA, DAVE COPELAND. Dancing to twelve The Pastels BaHooogoonsf 19 Homecoming 67 RANDY McDOUGALL A good team is made up of dedicated players — players whose desire to win forces them to forfeit pleasures that the non-participant enjoys. The mem¬ bers of the Wa-Hi football team began turnouts August 23rd with temperatures sometimes above 90 degrees. It ' s no fun to run and tackle in that much heat, but Wa-Hi players persevere, trying to put their bodies in good physical shape. When school begins, there are four practices a week, three after school and a fourth Thursday evening. The Wa-Hi player is required to be on the practice field by three o’clock. That’s not much time to go to ones locker, return to the locker room, and dress into his bulky football uniform. But the Wa-Hi player knows that his promptness to practice is mandatory and that the discipline imposed upon him is a chief ingredient to winning games. Wa-Hi football players do work hard and do give up a great deal for one goal shared by them all . . , to win games for Wall a Walla High School, 16 ■clNTOSH STEV! With a 5-1-1 record, the JV team captured the mythical B squad title between Wa-Hi and Tri-City teams. Both the offense and the defense deveh oped into strong teams after the third game of the season. The defense allowed only IS points in the final four games while the offense scored 10L The B squad scored weft both on the ground and in the air, Dave Fredrickson ac counted for the passing while Tim Waite. Lonny Lightfoot, and Jack Davis pro¬ vided the power on the ground. One of their biggest assets was the ability to play as a unit both offensively and de¬ fensively. McDougal! scored the only touchdown of the game and the Cadets ' offense was stymied by Scott Brotherton on one side and Hugh McEachen on the other. The first half of the Davis game looked bad for the Devils, who were behind 14 to 6. Determined not to break their winning streak, the Devils got in gear and smashed the Pirates 33 to 14. During the second half, Jerry Ledford won the battle for a Davis fumble, and the Blue charged in for six points. After that, the Davis defense crumbled before an offense led by Murr. Their offense was almost completely halted by our defensive line led by Tow McOmber and Dirk Jansen. Then the Blues ran head on into a brick wall called the Wenatchee Panthers at our homecoming. Eric Johnson scored a touchdown after running 14 consecutive plays down 63 yards worth of field. The only other touchdown was scored when Johnson hit Gary Brumback on a short pass. Wenatchee scored three times and made alt of their extra points, making the final score 13 to 21. The game with Moses Lake was equally disappointing. Even though Mike Casey made an outstanding showing for the defensive line, the Blue Devils lost 7 to 19. We also drew a 0 to 0 tie with the Pasco Bulldogs in the wettest game of the year. 4 fGHf. Co-Captain RANDY McDOUG SID ST El m Nevertheless, Jim Oury broke up some of Pasco’s last drives for a score to break the deadlock. Furious from losing two consecutive games and tying another, the Blue Devils cere¬ moniously stomped Kennewick 38 to 7. After Murr and Mc- Dougall put Wa-Hi in the lead, Jerry Ledford intercepted a Lions ' pass and ran 33 yards to set up for a touchdown. Mike Eisele later recovered a fumble. Val Hein threw a 35 yard pass to Jeff Buerstatte for another six pointer. The last game of the season was against the Richland Bombers. Again, the Big Blue moved out its heavy artillery and smashed them 26 to 0. Jerry Gaddy did a great job on offense, and Dave Case caught a good pass that set Wa-Hi up on top. This put the Blue Devils in an undisputed second place in the Big Eight Conference. MARK GRUDZINSKI State All-Star Team 22 Leslie Stockton, one of the senior members of Girls ' Sports, demonstrates her Badminton form. Girls ' Sports This year ' s Girls ' Sports started off with many matches of tennis and badminton. Next on the agenda was speed-a-way followed by a large number of girls turning out for volleyball. Volleyball and basketball Sports days were held at the Tri-Cities with about eight schools attending. Gymnastics also brought out a large number of girls this year for a very successful season. In the spring, there was much activity for the girls with all kinds of track and field events. The girls enjoy Speed-a-way, which is a fast moving, outdoor game. Becky Mitchell does a graceful, but difficult form of the splits with apparent ease. Vickie Brewer checks her drive past Betty Young, Good control of the ball and good defense can make or break a team. Spotted by Mrs. Smith, Linda Rhode does a straddle hold on the sixteen foot long balance beam. Besides the balance beam, the girls worked on the uneven parallel bars, the vaulting horse, the trampoline, and mat tumbling. Debbie Pringle works on her free throws during one of the afternoon practice sessions. Bo ys ' Federation, a combined to¬ tal of the male population of Walla Walla High School, has been the source of many projects and school campaigns. Among their better known projects are the an¬ nual car smash, car safety drive and the auto rally. The entire federation meets once each month for federation assem¬ blies. Here, every member has the opportunity to voice his opinion or ask questions of guest speakers. This year some of the guest speak¬ ers have included Odd Bjerke, Ward Sandburg, Jr., and Claude Haggard. Boys’ Federation has also worked constantly to build school spirit. The Girls ' League involves all the girls at Wa-Hi, and because it lit¬ erally does just this, it has become the richest organization here at Wa-Hi, boasting a treasury of some $2,500 to $3,000, The Girls 1 League annually sponsors the Sophomore Orientation Tea and the following week the Welcome Frolic. Each quarter a party is given for transfer students and each semester there is a banquet. This year, to boost spirit during the Homecoming week, a display contest was held with designs constructed by homerooms in con¬ junction with the Homecoming theme. During the holiday season of Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Girls ' League prepares baskets for community families and also gives warm clothing. For the sports season, the Girls ' League sold Pom Poms and Booster Badges as one of two “great fund raising projects. The Girls ' League, with the help of the enthusiastic Minute Girls, sold all-occasion greeting cards. The biggest Girls ' League event of the year is Sadie Hawkins week, which was really celebrated in the traditional Dog-Patch style as this year was Leap Year. A successful Hootenanny was given in the spring and the Girl of the Month Contest again took its place as a Girls ' League specialty. 38 FIRST SEMESTER MINUTE GIRLS — FRONT ROW: Lucretia Elders, Judy Lamb, MerJa Kausche, Judy Keith, Laurie Drum- heller, Linda Wilson, Cathy Christiansen, Jackie Hays, Judy Lindsey, ROW 2 : Pam Lentz, Debbie Pringle. Our objective this year was to get more people involved in school centered activities. How success¬ ful were we? The answer to this question is best reflected in this outstanding annual. The students’ attitude and enthusiasm have been exceptional. Nothing was ap¬ proached half-heartedly, and we have had a tremendously successful year to show for it. ( would like to think some of this can be attributed to the efforts of student government. To each of you, I wish the best of luck in your chosen future, Sincerely yours, 43 Student Court end legislative Assembly STUDENT COURT: Bruce Bjerke, Senior Justice; Judy Almon, Secretary; Dick Simon, Chief Justice; Bob Anderson, Senior Jus¬ tice; and Dave Cobb, Junior Justice. NOT PICTURED: Cathy Christiansen, Sophomore Justice; Ken Buley, Bailiff, AS© Cabinet Meeting Student Court at Wa-Hi was basically the students 1 way of enforcing the faws and statutes that were enacted by them, fn this way the students not only pass laws in order to make things at Wa-Hi run smoothly, but they also have the power, through Student Court, to see that these laws are enforced. It is the duty of the court to determine the guilt or innocence of a person reported to the court for breaking one of the laws at Wa-Hi. If this person is judged to be guilty by the court, it is the responsibility of the court to give this person a sentence. However, it is not the responsibility of the court to enforce this sentence. The Chief Justice, in addition to performing the duties of a regular justice, must see that all subpoenas are deliv ered, must plan all court sessions, and must preside over the court sessions. ■ i ' Jr jrav VWl; r use. ft vy MJ| ■uf m i W r w f JClf M Ift i . Throughout the year the assembly ' s emphasis has been tow ard activities which benefit the students and the community. Traffic Court was made up of five justices this year: chief justice, senior justice, two junior justices, and sophomore justice. Each one of the five had one vote in rendering a verdict. The major duty of the chief justice consists of presiding over all court proceedings, however, this job often entails much more than one might suspect Anoth¬ er important activity of the chief justice is co-ordinating with other schools who want to set up a judicial system. Defeating Hermiston 42-26 and losing to Mac-Hi 26-33, the Devils were really hot and won from Sunnyside 60-56, The following week Hermis¬ ton sought revenge and lost 57-45. Sunnyside also found the door to victory locked when they came up on the short end of a 78-57 score. The next game saw Baker using jet power as they streaked past Wa-Hi 53-43, Steve Martin who controlled the board for rebounds in many games, was especially hot at Hermiston and racked up 24 points for the Devils; the final score Wa-Hi 63 Her¬ miston 52. The first league game saw Wa-Hi with a 4-1 record pitted against the Wenatchee Panthers, Ward Sandberg played an excellent game, sinking 12 points. After two overtimes, Wa-Hi emerged winner (68-66) of the most exciting game of the year. The Devils 1 first game of the new year brought no new revelations in strategy. Winning over the Bulldogs of Pasco 70-60 the following week they smashed Davis 70-65 with Mike Murr playing an outstanding game scor¬ ing some 22 points of his own. Then the Bombers chal¬ lenged the Blue Devils and were taken to the cleaners 67-56, Moses Lake was next on the check list. Wa-Hi won its 5th straight victory from the Moses Lake Chiefs 72-50, The next candidate for the Devils ' burning fire was the Kennewick Lions, who were barbecued 84-62 with Gary Brum back lighting the fire for 16 of 84 points, Wa-Hi MANAGERS; DON BOEN STEVE AYCOCK had a 6-0 winning streak going for them I hey beat Eisenhower 64-57, This left the Devils in an undefeated position in the Big Eight Conference, Pasco and the flu snapped the winning streak with a 50-47 victory, Davis followed with a 74-67 score despite excellent playing by Ron Harris and Ed Crudup. Next came the Richland Bombers who made 94 direct hits to our 68, Larry Siegel sank 6 points and had a key role in many offensive plays. The following week saw the Blue Machine in better working order against Moses Lake. Fifteen points from Dave Case was all that was needed to defeat the Chiefs again 77-67. Traveling to Kennewick, the Devils turned Dennis Dickey loose (14 points) and returned with an 89-79 win. The last two league games against Eisenhower and Wenatchee were a disappoint¬ ment, the Devils losing both games 52-63 and 61-77. Going to Richland for District competition Wa-Hi tan¬ gled with the Wapato Wolves and lost in the last 5 sec¬ onds. Jerry Jones was on the firing line for the Devils scoring 26 points, many in the last quarter. Since this year ' s team had only 3 seniors, it will be about the same next year. With one more year of play¬ ing together, the Big Blue should be winners next year if this year ' s close scores are any indication. Next year, Big Eight, watch out! The Devils are coming. The first concert presented was with the choir October 24th in the Commons. The Christmas season found the orchestra making a trip to the Marcus Whitman Hotel to perform with the choir where they provided their own numbers and accompanied the choir. On December 17th, the Christmas Concert, “Hear The Joyful News,” was presented. The orchestra played a fine program including the old favorite “Sleigh Bells 1 At the Christmas assembly, the orchestra pre¬ sented much of the same program. For the March 12th concert, the orchestra provided accompaniment for the choir ' s Latin number, “Re¬ gina Coeli ' The group then traveled to Wapato for the district contest March 30th. They worked hard for this event and their work paid off. The April spring concert and the all-city orchestra concert concluded the year ' s orchestra activities. American Services Ag—Data, Inc.
