' Neath the range of mighty mountains, Reared against the sky, Stands our Alma Mater As the years go by. Forward ever be our watchword— Conquer and prevail. Hail to thee our Alma Mater, Walla Walla, Hail. The Associated Student Body of Walla Walla High School Presents The 1967 Wa-Hi ROYAL BLUE 3 principal; and Mr. Franklin Hanson, principal; seek the answers to where the individual went. Wa-Hi has gone computerized! Examining the witchery of the IBM, Mrs. Ada Howells, counselor; Mr. Glenn Ledbetter, assistant in i m 9 ■ mm B • ■ m v WALLA WALLA HIGH SCHOOL From Where I Stand Wa-Hi is many things. Hootennanys and frolics after noisy basket¬ ball games or wrestling matches; a sick feeling in Biology I at the sound of a crushing cov er slip; an ominous call down to Mr Neher’s office; getting an ‘7V 1 on a SEPS test. Nothing is so important to Wa-Hi as the imagination and enthusiasm of the students. Each year is unique. For some, the beginning; for others, the end. Apathy in student government gave way to elation on the football field. Franklin Dodd was several times drowned in effigy; the JOURNAL caused controversy and creativity. We, the seniors of this year, have never known the old buildings. Traditions are ours, nay, Wa-Hi 1 s to continue. This is our bequest. Now— Take my hand and walk with me. And we shall see what the morrow may bring. 4 Ambitious students arrived the first day full of expectations, dreams, fright, and questions. Little did they know, nor suspect, theirs is the quest for the unsatisfied mind. A brief respite amid a hurried day. Lunch hour of 35 minutes, gave time for contemplation of studies, conferring with 4th period Socio-Econ. friends abouea test, or merely meandering. Throughout High School Students Seek The ambition to learn — the desire to improve — drives many students to seek answers to questions un¬ answered in class. Wa-Hi’s library maintains a wide stock of reference materials, magazines, fiction, classics, and biographies for the use of the student. In addition, the library provides several independent study cubicles, type¬ writers, and a tape recorder to aid the process of education. Freedom of speech is a vital and necessary part of maintaining the American way of life. To speak clearly, intelligently, and confidently is the ain f Wa-HFs Speech Department under Mrs. Geraldine Angerman. 0 e wnv and Discovery of the why and how and because of the universe prompts Kent Williams, Steve Cross, and the hundreds of Wa-Hi students taking the sciences in the never ceasing thirst for knowledge. 0 The muse of optimism sparks fire into the hearts of exuberant Wa-Hi students as the Blue Devi is move on to final victory. { 8 wm I i People come into our lives And walk with us a mile; And because of circumstance, They only stay a while. They serve a need within the day That moves so quickly by; And then are gone beyond our reach, We often wonder why, God only knows the reasons that meet and share a smile—— Why people come into our lives, And only walk a mile The Blue Wall fought hard for a victorious season with such as Randy McDougall charging down the field. 9 t y A sea of faces — seniors, jun¬ iors, sophomores — view one of the many assemblies throughout the year, Wa-Hi was fortunate to have creative, interested cheerlead¬ ers and students who devoted their time and energies to building last¬ ing memories for Wa-Hi students. Our President Mike Johnson-. This year’s student government with its various activities was very successful It was successful only because we had an interested and enthusiastic student body with which to work. Such interest and enthusiasm was displayed in the effort put forth by the Legislative Assembly committees. The gym last spring with its posters of the 1966-67 election. I w r ould like to sincerely thank my cabinet for the fine work accomplished by the projects. Their assistance was greatly appreciated. 1 wish the best of luck to the success of Wa-Hi. ACTIVITIES Girls’ League Since Girls League is comprised of all the girts of Wa-Hi, the activities this year have been centered on utilizing the many talents of those members in Girls’ League. The year’s activities began with a Big and Little Sister Tea, the first frolic of the football season, and two Girls’ League transfer dinners During the Christmas season, they prepared food baskets and collected clothing and toys to help the needy families of the community Their November candy sale was also a success, thanks to the efficient work of the minute girls and the enthusiasm of all the members Another of the many events of the year was Sadie Hawkins week which was, as usual, a success Girls’ League also started a new program this year, in which they honored a senior girl each month as ' Girl of the Month,’ The girls were chosen on the basis of their grades, which had to be ' C’ or higher, and their participation in school and out-of-school activities. A panel of six people, consisting of Mrs Monahan, Miss VVirth, Mr. Neher, Peggy Carter, M’Lisse Perrault, and Lynn Chamberlain chose the girls. The Boys Federation of Walla Walla High School has begun to make progress. The boys ac¬ tivity room has been very attractively furnished. The main project of the year was the raising of money to pay for these furnishings. Some of the projects included the distribution of Wa-Hi Ath¬ letic Calendars, auto registration, Homecoming car smash and beard growing contest, the auto rally, and the Christmas toy and clothes drive. The Federation has a certain number of as¬ semblies during the year. This year we had from Whitman College Mr. Leper who told of his trip to a Pro-Football training camp; from the Sher¬ iffs Department Mr. Ray who spoke on youth citizenship; and from the Washington State Pen¬ itentiary ' three inmates who gave a fine assembly on why students should stay in school and get an education. The Boys’ Federation showed movies during noon and sponsored another auto rally. The pres¬ ident, Roger Hart, feels the club has done very well this year and the representatives of the re¬ spective homerooms have put in many hours of service for a better Wa-Hi. Then the Blue Devils beat the Kennewick Lions 27-0, with touchdowns by Mike Murr, Randy McDougall, and Roger Hart. Despite a squad heavily depleted by the absence of Gary Owsley, Larry Siegel, Hugh McEachen, and Rich Hap, the rampaging Blue Devils beat Richland 14-0. The defense did an excellent job, thanks to teamwork and hard driving. Wa-Hi edged Eisenhower 7-6 with 64 seconds left in the game as Randy McDougall caught a pass from Eric Johnson to make the tying touchdown. Alley kicked the ball through the up¬ rights, for the conversion point. A super charged gang of Blue Devils trimmed the Davis Pirates 21-13 in the Homecoming game. The strengthened Wa-Hi defense made a good show that night. Eric Johnson and Mike Murr made the difficult Pirate game a winning one. Despite the rain-soaked Bomber field, the Blue Devils knocked over Richland 20-0. The Wa-Hi defense held strong and true with Jerry Ledford and Dan Smoke playing extra well. With a good defense unit working for a win, the Wa-Hi Blue Devils beat Kennewick 26-0. Randy Mc¬ Dougall, Mike Murr, and Dan Alley made the winning touchdowns. Mike Casey, a starter, in every game, proved to be a very efficient blocker. Wa-Hi played a sterling defensive game at Wenatchee. After losing the Wenatchee game (in the last quarter), the Wa-Hi Blue Devils took out their spite on the Moses Lake Chiefs and defeated them 20-0. Denny King made a good showing for the Blue Devils. The mighty Blue Devils unloaded a big bomb against Pasco, which nailed another victory 27-20 and gained Wa-Hi first place as champions. The game was highlighted with scores by Dan Alley, Jerry Gaddy, and Randy McDougall. Mike Mitchell came into the game in the last quarter and helped make the last touchdown. John Krummel and Mike Murr each tallied 18 points for a final score of 71 to 53, In undoubtedly their toughest game of the year, the undefeated Blue Devils took the lead for good with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter. In this tremendous team effort, Eric Johnson and Mike Murr helped to make the victory over Hermiston possible. By playing a man-for-man defense, the Devils controlled the 53 to 35 Wenatchee game. Led by Doug Lundeby, the charging Blue Devils domi¬ nated the backboards against the Panthers. After misfortune in losing the games with the Pasco Bulldogs 58-66, the Yakima Pirates 59-73, and the Richland Bombers 37-88, the team came back with a crushing blow for Moses Lake. With Mike Murr’s foul shot starting a 14-point splurge in the third quarter and the agility of John Krummel, Mike Anderson, and Roger Hart, the game was bagged at 65-51, After a close loss to the Kennewick Lions (73-71), the mighty Devils blasted Eisenhower by utilizing a strong man-to-man defense through¬ out the 65 to 49 game. Dennis Dickey was extremely active during the game. With an extra strong defense and an equally strong will sparked by the win over the Pasco Bulldogs 54-45, the Devils raided fifth ranked Davis 84-52. Many of the team poured quite a few ' through the bucket. At home, a tumaway crowd of over 1700 fans saw the Wa-Hi Devils rip through the Richland Bombers 75 to 65. Every player on the team was striving for the win. The team then rolled to their fifth Big Eight w f in in a row p at the Moses Lake Chiefs ' home court with a 71 to 43 decision. Eight points were scored before the Chiefs dumped any shots. Then with Larry ' Block substituting for Doug Lundeby and the wall to win, the Devils beat Kennewick 72-69 in a close but very exciting game. Next, after beating the Cadets by 2 points {79-77}, Wa-Hi won a close game with Eisen¬ hower. The w ' hole team was fighting for the win. u We’re awful happy to be there, w as the joyous comment from the Blue Devil basketball team as they defeated the Wenatchee Panthers 77 to 46. Each member of the team was doing his best to win the last game of the season. Outstanding in their efforts for a final win were John Krummel, Mike Anderson, Doug Lundeby, Mike Murr, Roger Hart, Larry- Block and Tom Crudup. With promising members from the B and C squads, Wa-Hi can look forward to other successful years.
