H MEL HERMES Vice Principal Dean of Boys MR HANSON Principal MR LEDBETTER Vice Principal Congratulations to the graduate! In our rapidly changing society, it is difficult to over¬ estimate the importance of education. Adapta¬ tion to the changing world is dependent upon education; re-education and continuing edu¬ cation. It is not unrealistic to predict for your generation outposts on the moon, 2 (10-mi le¬ an-hour commuter trains and 200-passenger ocean jets, hemispheric common markets and a cybernated economy. Your faculty and administrators have given you an opportunity to learn how to compete in a rapidly changing world; how¬ ever, it will require a lifelong education and retraining lo meet the demands of the future. We hope that we have developed in each individual the knowledge, interests, ideals, habits and powers whereby you will find your place in a changing society and ust i that place io shape both yourself and society to noble ends. Man ' s destiny appears to depend upon his acquisition and use of knowledge. DEL G. PETERSON Superintendent of Schools This year ' s senior class will be the last Walla Walla High School students to have had the experience of starting their high school careers in the old building and finish¬ ing in our new modern plant. The “Royal Blue has given you an accurate, pictorial record of this transition from the old to the new. We are celebrating our seventy-fifth anniversary this year, and the “Royal Blue through the years has given us insight into the many fine traditions w r e have established during these seventy-five years. Some new innovations were established this year, and it will be interesting to see if they will stand the test of time and become traditions. The “Royal Blue is one of our finest traditions, and this year ' s staff is to be commended once again for giving us a vivid picture of our progress and achievement for the year. Best wishes, seniors, for your continued success and may your transition from high school to other endeavors be as successful as your transition from the old to the new. FRANKLIN R. We can remem¬ ber not only the happy moments when the team scored another touchdown, or made the final basket to break the tie, but also the sad moments of defeat, which is truly a test of sportsmanship. Yes, they all seem a blur — the fight song, the noise parades, the times we sang the Alma Mater with misty eyes. For Wa-Hi, it was a year of change and progression in school spirit. The dance team, Roy alettes, originated Last spring by Mrs. Jan Kirk, has been an active part of VVa-Hi this year. Under the direction of Mrs. Arlene Smith, Wa-Hi’s Royalettes developed three routines which were performed at various games and assemblies. The year was highlighted by a trip to Yakima to perform at Davis, This spring Royalettes were made available to the community for performances. The year was concluded with several social functions for dance team members. Homecoming v eek, celebrating Wa-Hi’s 75 years of existence at various locations, started on Tuesday with Lick-the-L ion Day. Wednesday was Kiddies Day, climaxed by the first annual Wa-Hi Trike Race- Thurs¬ day, the spirit of the week centered around the car smash at noon and in the evening the serpentine winding around the streets of downtown Walla Walla to Borleske Stadium where the bonfire was held. The big day of Homecoming was Friday, color day. At the afternoon assembly the naming of the royalty, Queen — Dee Dee Patterson, King — Rick Stockstad, Princesses — Pam Pringle, Susie Struthers, Princes —Larry Christensen Scott McKnight, was the big event The football players were spurred on to victory by affec¬ tionate kisses from the cheerleaders and Jack Rich! was named Fairy Princess as Wa-HPs most school spirited student. Dick Jansen, Dana LeValley, Tom Olson, Scott Brotherton, Chuck Bristol, Coach Marchbanks LARRY BLOCK TERRY FINE TOM NELSON After a dim showing at the annual jam¬ boree in Pasco, VVa-Hi came back to win all her home games and finish number two in the league with a respectable 7-2 season. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Fletch¬ er, Mr. Neher and Mr Baker, VVa-Hi started her regular season with a 20 to 13 win over Richland. Much of the credit should go to Dan Smoke, Rich Hays, and Hugh McEach- en for their fine defensive line play The Blue and White then returned home for two big games — downing Kennewick 26-14 and stomping on a strong Caldwell, Idaho, team 21-0. Quarterback Wayne Dickey hit Randy Tysor with three T D. passes and co-inspira- tional player Rocky Isley held up the de¬ fense. Wa-Hi then dropped the league open¬ er to Eisenhower 7-13 despite strong efforts from Juniors Roger Hart, Gary ' Owsley, and Doug Kennedy. Coming back in fine shape, VVa-Hi, led by team captain Garry Christen¬ sen, downed Pasco 14-0 and then hit the road for another win, this time over Moses Lake 13-7 with a strong offensive game from co- inspi rational player Scott Knight. Homecom¬ ing was brightened by a 7-0 win over Ken¬ newick in a rugged defensive battle, reen¬ forced by Dennis Ledford and Steve Reiber, League champs Davis gave VVa-Hi her sec¬ ond and last dump 7-14 despite the end play of Steve Perry and Terry Fine. The Devils wound up their season with a 21-7 win over Richland with Dan Alley booting his 16th point after the touchdown and sophomore Randy McDougall proving himself as a back. All in all it was a good season which in¬ cluded a clean sweep over the tri-city schools. The JV ' s also lost to Clarkston 15-27. Rich York, Wa-Hi’s top varsity runner and the only Wa-Hi runner to go to state, won nine first places, sixth place at Idaho, seventh place at Spokane, and sixth at state Rich also set five new course records. The varsity lettermen included Rich York, followed by Jerry Rea, Ken Crawford, Bill EngeJn, Mike Meiners, Jerry Hensley, and Jim Benefiel, The JV lettermen for 1965 were Ray Reid, Greg Scott, Steve Buley, Jeff Buerstatte, and Frank Corkrum, RICH AVERILL Basketball ’65 Hart up for a jump shot- DAN ALLEY Krummel up for Games Pts. The Blue Devils had a season record of 9 wins and ! 1 losses which included the two play-off games with Eisenhower and Richland. Rich led the team both in scoring with 273 13,6 points and in rebounding with 244, Junior forwards Roger Hart and John Krummel were second and third in scoring with 11.3 and 10,2 points respectively, Krummel was also second in rebounding with 180 rebounds. The usual starting five included Wayne Dickey and Joe Gulstine at guard, John Krummel and Roger Hart at forward, and Rich Averill at cen¬ ter Generally the first to be called off the bench, Doug Lundeby, a 6 ' 6 245-lb. junior, did a very good job of scoring and rebounding. GARY OWSLEY LARRY PIERCE Larry ' Pierce and Garry Christensen were also first line reserves all season with Pierce getting the starting nod on several occasions. This was the year of injuries for the Blue Devils with Gary Owsley, Joe Gulstine, Doug Lundeby and Garry Christensen all missing games because of injury or illness, Owsley was lost for the season due to ill¬ ness. The highlight of the season had to be the upset victory over Richland 76-62. Also, beating Eisen¬ hower three times and splitting with Kennewick and Richland made the season acceptable. With three lettermen returning plus a very fine J.V squad, 17-1 record, the picture is bright for the next year accord¬ ing to Coach Kent Matheson. At the sports banquet March 22nd, Rich Averill received the “most valuable player” award while Joe Gulstine and Wayne Dickey were selected as “most inspirational,” JUNIOR VARSITY: Jerry Jones, Larry Siegel, Jim Katon, Dick Simon, Dan Huntley, Randy Graham, Jim Hahner, Scott Brotherton, Eric Johnson, Den¬ nis Dickey, Jerry Rea. Led by senior lettermen Rich York, Rockey Isley, Bob Tate, Bill Korfhage and Steve Minkier, the team posted victories over strong Kennewick, Richland, and Davis wrestling teams. The best individual records for the season were presented by Rich Hays (10-4), Rich York (14-6), Dan Smoke (10-4-1) and Rockey Isley (9-3-1), Wa-Hi placed second in the sub-district tournament with Rockey Isley and Rich Hays winning first places; Bob Tate, Bill Korfhage and Rich York second places; Greg Scott, Randy McDougall and Steve Reiber third places; and Dan Smoke and Dave Schaub fourth places. The following weekend these boys participated in the district tournament and led Wa-Hi to a fifth place finish. Rockey Isley won a first place and qualified for the state tournament, but an unfortunate leg injury caused his withdrawal from the state meet. Rich York and Bob Tate placed third at the district tournament. The success of a season is partially due to the junior varsity boys who make the varsity work hard to retain their positions. The junior varsity had a successful season with a record of nine wins and two losses. The thirty-two boys who wrestled on the junior varsity team recorded 74 indi¬ vidual wins agains 54 losses. With a nucleus of ten returning lettermen, the wrestlers arc looking for¬ ward to the 1966-67 season. Since that auspicious day 65 years ago, Wa-Hi has en¬ joyed the services of a school newspaper almost continuously except for the depression years of 1931-35. Although the paper has taken various forms, today’s JOURNAL is not unlike its ancestor in size—eight pages, five columns. In content it re¬ flects the increased enrollment, enlarged curriculum and mod¬ em facilities of Wa-Hi 1966. Not really planning to teach as a steady job, she found that she really enjoyed teaching and was surprised at first to get paid for 1 having so much fun,” In 1965 she had the pleasure of a summer ' s study in Cologne, Germany, and the opportunity to see much of the country. At Wa-Hi she has been a German and a Latin instructor for the past twelve years and has served on many committees. For several years, Mrs. Kirkman was also adviser to the National Honor Society. MR. He has felt very fortunate to be a part of one of the finest high schools in the State of Washington There was never a dull moment for MRS. BETTY BLOOM, secretary to Mr Hanson. She has enjoyed knowing many wonderful people, farulty and students. Although the most exciting experience was moving to the new building, pre¬ paring for commencement was also thrilling and sad, for many friends were leaving. Having traveled to many parts of the world, MR, LEROY PELL has been a world history teacher at Wa-Hi for the past seven years. He organized the International Relations Club, a re¬ warding experience, and has enjoyed his teaching Many fine people and excellent leaders have gone through his classes. On the other hand, performances by two-miler Rich York, pole-vaultcr Ron Dixon, and the mile re¬ lay team efforts of Randy Tysor, Rill Engeln, Tim Campbell, and Skip Wallace gave the Blue Devils something to crow about. A series of sub-district meets beginning May 10th in Kennewick, and ending May 21st in Yakima, resulted in eight Blue Devils qualify¬ ing for the final district meet at Yakima. “Qualifiers” were Mike Meiners in the mile, Jim Nelson in the 880, Rich York in the 2-mile, Ron Dixon in the pole-vault, and Tysor, Engeln, Campbell, and Wallace in the mile re¬ lay. Only first and second place winners in individual events, and first place winning relay teams qualify for State. The “better than ever” competition resulted in mo Blue Devils winning the coveted honor of participating in the an¬ nual State Track Meet at Pullman May 27th and 28th. Rich York won his specialty as did Ron Dixon. Ron broke the district pole-vault record with a leap of thirteen feet eleven inches. His “effort” broke the district record by % inches, and the school record, which he had set earlier in the year, by eight inches. Ron is a junior, A predominantly sophomore and junior squad will miss senior veterans Bill Engeln, Tom Lyons, Mike Meiners, Randy Tysor, Skip Wallace, and Rich York, but it looks forward with anticipation to help from an apparently strong group of incoming sophomores.
