Knowledge should be to our lives os the nourishing Earth is to the trees. To Mrs. Ruth McDonald who for the post 19 years has been head of the Business Education department and teaching advanced shorthand, mimeographing, office practice and typing at Walla Walla High School, the Royal Blue Staff is proud to dedicate the 1964 ROYAL BLUE. Mrs. McDonald attended Teachers College at Lewiston and received her B.A. degree from Walla Walla College, Among the colleges where she has pursued graduate studies are Stanford University, University of Montana, and Walla Wallo College, With Mr, McDonald and son Jack, she has found time for a number of educational trips abroad. Four visits to Europe and three months in South America including a trip around Cape Horn hove been the subjects of her photographic hobby, Mrs. McDonald has truly gone far beyond the call of duty to be of assistance to her colleagues and students. Her varied experiences and knowledge have been an inspiration to her students and fellow teachers. 4 Dedication 4 Girls ' League 112 Moving 6 Clubs 115 Administration 12 Senior Play 122 Faculty 13 Orchestra 123 Senior 19 Band 124 Junior 48 Vocal Music 128 Sophomore 62 Assistants 131 Government 78 F.F.A. 134 Pep Squad 97 Barn Dance 136 Football 84 Sadie Hawkins 137 Homecoming 88 N H. There seemed to be an air of excitement and expecta¬ tion that made the work of mov¬ ing a pleasure sought after by many. Many administrators, stu¬ dents ond teachers toiled over the vacation period unpacking and placing material at the new Wa- Hi. Custodians from all of the schools of the district concen¬ trated on getting new Wa-Hi ready to open Thursday; January 2nd, FAMIL ' GRASS SEB AMIUV S S SEED CLASSES A famous states man, in a speech some years ago, made the following statement: ‘ Destiny is not a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. Fortunately for the youth of Walla Walla, a group of people decided that they had waited long enough for a new, modern, functional high school and set for themselves the task of making a new high school building a reality. The choice that your parents, your friends and neighbors made has given to you and to future graduating classes a school plant facility that enables you to compete on equal terms with graduates from other communities which o high priority on meeting the educational needs of youth in these challenging times. It Is my hope that through your serious¬ ness of purpose and by your overt ac¬ tions, the faculty ond future student bodies will take full advantage of the educational opportunity hot destiny has provided Arthur D, Jones Mr Jones ond Mr. Reynolds Administration Mr. Ledbetter and Mr, Hanson As a newcomer to Wa-Hl, I am blessed to in herit a school full of fine traditions, good school spirit, and loyalty to one s school evidenced by genuine pride. The cooperation I have received from students, faculty and parents has been most rewarding. The Royal Blue is to be commended m once again for doing an excellent job in felling the story of the school year 1963-64. Congratulations, seniors, and best wishes for a successful future. To sophomores, juniors and faculty—whatever we may do as a school in the future, may we do it well together. Franklin B. An enlarged page size and the use of new feature techniques were among improvements which increased the paper ' s circulation. An industrious advertising staff sold more space to town merchants than ever before. The Journal staff, working unde r Mrs. Bailey, was talented and experienced. Many members were given the opportunity to attend special journalism conferences at the University of Washington. Improvements in news and feature writing were stressed as well as more interesting photography and better page make-up, A primary aim this year was to broaden Journal coverage; the staff attempted to present a greater variety in material geared to the interests of readers. The staff was especially proud of an acknowledgment from the Wall Street Journal of the paper’s work on the assassination of the President. FRANCES CONWAY ' S 13 years of service on the Walla Walla High School faculty during which the school has become a three year high school in O new setting. Graduating from W,S.U, f she became head of the home economics deportment and subsequently served on the committee for new Wa-Hf, She has received a number of honors including representative at the I 2th Na¬ tional Citizenship Conference in Wash¬ ington, D.C„ membership on a United Nations committee translating recipes from foreign lands, and leadership of a group of young people in the people-to- people tour of Europe. The most coveted honor has been the receipt of an honor¬ ary state FHA membership, a group she has helped to build. Respected by faculty and students alike, all wish Mrs. Conway continued success in the field of adult education. Spanish Teacher Leaves MR. KEITH CROSBIE, Spanish in¬ structor at Wa Hi for 10 years and head of the foreign language department for the last four years, will be language su¬ pervisor for the State of Montana. His new duties will include curriculum plan¬ ning and supervision of the construction of language laboratories. The develop¬ ment of a course of study for language instruction in the elementary schools has long been a dream. A member of the planning committee for the new school, he supervised the construction of the language laboratories in both schools. Mr. Crosbie and his family have traveled widely. One of the highlights was a year in Chosica, Peru. 25 miles from Lima, under the Ful bright exchange teacher program. Faculty and students will miss Mr. Crosbie s friendly smile and entertaining manner of expression but wish him suc¬ cess in his new field. Instead of the traditional three-act play, the aII-school play on April I Sth was a group of three one-act plays. One of these, The Hungerers ’ traveled to Yakima the following weekend where it won third place and a superior rating at the Yakima Play Festival. Phil Storrer received the best supporting actor award. Hello Out There ' by Saroyan was directed by Mr. Patterson with student directors Linda Goetsch and Eleanor Howells assisting. The cast included Pat Craig, Terry Parker, Commie Jensen, Lcrena Benson, Bill Ekstrom, and Greg Kinsinger. Saroyans The Hungerers, directed by Judy Peterson and Karen Gibson, included Kay Ann Bergevin, Steve Hahner. Terry Houk, Phi! Storrer, and Dave Overman.
