Wa-Hi ' s 14th annual Homecoming was kicked oft Wednesday, November 1, with the erection of floats. The next day found loyal Devils, dressed in their class colors, making the yearly run to Borleske Stadium and its waiting bonfire, burning W , and pep rally. The survivors returned to school Friday to join the Pep Assembly, which included an informal coronation, beard judging, and entertainment. A Noilfc Parade preceded the game against Borah, which was well played but sadly scored- ™ The ha lftime show included the Sponsors, a special band routine, and presentation of me royalty. The Saturday-night dance, flamingo Fantasy , was well attended by both alums and students. The decorations were in orchid, pink and white; the music was stereo. Queen Cheryl, King Jock Basketball The Blue Devils ' basketball team wound up a fine season in a heroic bid for a berth at the state competition with a 47 to 43 loss to West Valley of Spokane. The narrow margin was typical of many games played this year. The Devils finished the season with a record of 12 wins and 8 losses. Cold figures conceal the fact that many of the wins were over the top teams of the state, such as Richland and Hudson ' s Bay, and do not reveal an 8- game winning streak late in the season. The Lewiston Bengals, who with the Kennewick team were the only teams to defeat Wa-Hi twice, ended the season defeating the Devils and breaking the winners ' luck. The only team to defeat the Blue Devils on the home maples was Mac-HL The team was plagued at times by an early season weakness, excessive fouling. Losses included the season ' s opening match Richland, which the Blue Devils later reversed with a decisive 25- 14 victory over the Bombers. The other two losses were administered by a strong Pullman Greyhound team in out-of-league competition. The squad captured an undisputed claim to the Southern Yakima Valley Conference grappling title Feb. , with a 23-20 win at Kennewick. This was the first time the Devils had won the dual meet title since the conference was formed three years ago. The future of wrestling at Wa Hi looks bright, since the dual meet championship was won with a team in which sophomores wrestled regu¬ larly in 7 out of 12 weight divisions. Individually team Captain Phil Lane won 15, lost 3, and drew one. Phil tost out in district and did not go to state this year. Mike By- ergo, district champion and the only Devil to enter state competition (where he had 1 win and 2 losses), compiled a season record of 18 wins and 3 losses. Situated 250 miles above the Arctic Circle a colorful fishing town of 4,000 was Ardi ' s home away from home for two months. She lived with the Ingvald Aronsen family consisting of a business-minded papa, an industrious mama, an energetic sister, a sports-loving brother, and a darling six year old sister. Norske Folken ' ' or the Norwegian people were the joy of her summer. Be¬ cause they are extremely hospitable and friendly, everyone would be charmed by their company, Norwegians are not only fun-lovtng but are modern individual- ists and proud of their nation. A large new light table, which cuts pa sting-up time in half, was made possible by a gift from Walla Walla Hi-Y, boy ' s service club. Mr. John Largent, Judy ' s father, designed and built the light table. Exchange papers, which number almost sev¬ enty, come from schools as far away as Hawaii, Texas, and Rhode Island. Special editions of the paper included the Homecoming issue, a senior issue, and the fourth annual creative writing issue. The Journal staff included co-editors, a feature editor, an exchange editor, nine straight reporters, a business and advertising manager, an advertis¬ ing staff of five, three typists, and a staff photo¬ grapher. Working as a team, this group of twen¬ ty-five made the Journal what it is—a well-writ- ten, stylish paper of which the school can be proud. Class officers Jeff Campbell and Virginia Mer¬ ten s handled tickets, while Walla Walla and Equates Hi-Y ' s ushered. Cecily Koch, Pam Bafus, Marilyn McIntosh, and Margaret Cornelison worked on publicity, and Cathy And¬ res was in charge of programs. This year the club donated five records to Sequin School, eight dollars for lamps which two mem¬ bers worked fifty hours to build, and one member donated cloth for upholstery. Two members put in nine hours operating projectors for the Veter¬ ans ' Hospital, Speech Yes, our speech classes are this close, but definitely not this exclusive. At the beginning of the year many students sat tensely throughout every period dreading those get acquainted speeches. As the months went by, however, and we gave demonstration, Christmas, inform, con¬ vince, banquet, gain action, impress and enter¬ tain speeches, we had confidence more and more in the work we could do. This confidence came not completely from that speech given so perfect¬ ly—most often it came with the seeming failure speech. By making a mistake once, we stopped fearing mistakes and learned how to overcome them. None of it was individual work; we im¬ proved together, criticising or praising helpfully. Those first weeks suffering were worth it. Now we ' re all eloquent—almost. Handbook Bev Wilson SPEECHES: Jeff Campbell, Susan Coif in , John Rengstorff, Kathy Branson.
