Alma Mater ' Neath the range of mighty mountains. Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater As the years go by. Forward ever be our watchword— Conquer and prevail. Hail to thee our Alma Mater, Walla Walla, Hail. i Presented by the Associated Students Walla Walla, Washington of Walla Walla High School Nineteen Hundred Sixty-One Dedication Mr. Wilbur Boschker, a graduate of Tolloch High School, South Dakota, and State Normal and Industrial College, Clendale, North Dakota, has been teaching for twenty-seven years. In his twenty years at Wa-Hi he has taught woodshop, al¬ gebra and mechanical drawing, also. Believing that the building isn ' t what makes the school, Mr. Boschker states, What I like best each year is coming back to the kids, not seeing teachers, not the work or facing the hard¬ ships, but seeing the kids because each one is a challenge. For his outstanding work, deep devotion to guiding each student who passes through his door and his love of teaching, we the students of Wa-Hi wish to dedicate this Royal Blue of 1961 to him. Wa-Hi (5 Dave McRae a Tom Nelson Frank Noal Mickey O ' Neil Larry Richards Tom Schulke Mike Williams The 1960 football season was an in-between year for the Wa-Hi Blue Devils. Faced with the loss of 18 lettermen, Coach Fletcher was nevertheless, able to field a light but scrappy team. Off to a slow start, they finished the season with a record of four wins, four losses, and earned second place in the Big Seven with a league tally of four wins and one loss. Seven lettermen will graduate this year, but there are quite a few talented sophomores and juniors to take their places, among them Frank Noal, Mickey O ' Neil, Tom Fox, Jack Thornton, Tom Schulke, Tom Nelson, Doug Coffey, and Mike Dunham. The Blue Devils presented a good ground game, but were easily hurt by more aerial-minded teams. Memorable games included the romp against Richiand, Pasco ' s sharp demise, and the fine victory over Kennewick. Dino is the story of a young boy, who discovers at the last possible moment that a better life is possible. His new life in a big city settlement house is an experience in trusting and sought-for friendship — eventu¬ ally to understanding. Essen¬ tially a study in human nature. It is the most challenging play yet attempted by the Wa-Hi Dra¬ ma Department. Legislative Assembly has had a year of mixed accomplishments, handling worthwhile legislation, while at the same time experiencing the need for better- regulated assemblies and more clearly defined areas of authority. The work of committees formed to orient new students and to revise the Blue Book were specif ic accomplishments. Student Court has continued the process of revision and improvement which began last year. Procedures, enforcement, and the effectiveness of the Court have been greatly improved; improvement will continue as more students support the Court ' s attitudes. Bales in the center of the gym surrounded Bill Hof ' s ram lamb. Tiger, The false ceiling in three shades of blue, created the atmosphere of an oldtime square dance. Mel Repass and his band provided the music while couples did several mixers and square dances, Kay McKay was crowned this year ' s sweetheart by Ken Frazier, F,F,A, president. KEN FRAZIER AND F.F A. SWEETHEART ' KAY McKAY Sadie Hawkins The annual Sadie Hawkins dance, presented February 17, 1961 in the Wa-Hi Girls ' gym, was quite different, and was enjoyed by everyone. The royalty was omitted this year, but Mr, Kamp added a special feature with his marriage booth. Girls ' League sponsored the dance and con¬ tributed the decorations which consisted of dog- patch personalities on the walls. Several bales of hay in the center of the gym held up Mr, Scarecrow and his sweetheart. General chairman was Kathy Mundy, assisted by Sandy Oleson. Other chairmen were: Pat Seaborn, Joyce Bailey, Mary Morse, Marjorie Lewis, Janice Nye, Gretchen Herrmann, Kay Mc¬ Kay, Penny Walters, Jayne Siegel, Bev Wilson, and Ann Schultz. Chaperones for the dance were Dr, and Mrs. Philip Siegel, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morrison, and Mr and Mrs. Robert Whitner, The Gems provided the music for the dance and pictures were taken by Dan Gluck. The preceeding games were on the whole more favorable, as Wa-Hi finished the season with a score of 13 wins to 9 losses. Coach Richardson had a steady, well-balanced nucleus of six seniors, backed up by a group of five juniors. This second team will be next season ' s starting squad, and on that basis, the future ' s prospects are bright. The year ' s winning pattern fell into victories at home and losses away. As many of you know, plans are being formulated for a new high school in Wal¬ la Walla The building will not be complex ed in time to benefit the present Junior and Seniors My comment on this fact, however, is that even more important than the building is the program being carried on in a building — new or old. I want to commend the Wa-Hi students and faculty for the quality and scope of this year ' s high school program and for your enthusiasm and accomplishments. All of you individually and collectively have justifiable reason for being proud of the year ' s record. To the graduating Seniors may I express my sincere wishes for your continued suc¬ cess and progress in the years ahead. ARTHUR D, JONES superintendent The Royal Blue provides a lasting record of friends, teachers, and activities that will become more valuable with each passing year. The students on the annual staff who are responsible for the publication of this book deserve a real vote of thanks from the student body. The willingness with which these fine folks have given of their time and talents to render a real service to their school typifies the type of worth while activities in which Wa-Hi students participate. It is this spirit of cooperation and good citizenship that has made Wa- Hi the fine school that it is today. Congratulations, Seniors, on your gradu¬ ation and best wishes for the future. Administration and Faculty The Royal Blue unfolds the pictorial events of the busy year. The task of creat¬ ing and assembling a fine annual is a challenge of no small magnitude. Miss Gray and her staff deserve the plaudits of all for meeting that challenge so adequate¬ ly, To the Seniors goes my fondest wish for success and happiness. So long, Seniors.
