To those whom he served as a teacher, he was also a friend; to those to whom he ministered as a friend, he remained, by the excellence of his own living, a teacher. His wide and active interest in community activities, in his church and in his profession mean that not only has the staff but also the community suffered a great loss in his passing. SJn Iflemoniain Admini tnation Arthur Z Jones Allen L. Reynolds £ A. Tidrkk W, G Ledbetter One of the outstanding eve nts of the school year is the completion and distribution of the annual. Here re corded in graphic form are the events and accomplish ments which make the year interesting and profitable. This year ' s record is a good one. I want to congratulate the Wa-Hi students, and particularly the seniors on their accomplishments for year 1955-56, and wish for those who are graduating the best of success and hap¬ piness in your future endeavors. Arthur D. Jones Superintendent The Royal Blue is your diary of ‘56. Each senior by actions, words, or deeds has written something there. It serves as the indelible imprint of school life. When you leave the sheltered harbor of high school for the open sea of life, be ever mindful of the diary you write. So long, senior’ Good luck and happy hunting. K. A. Tidrick Principal I wonder how many students really re alize how indebted they are to the staff of the Royal Blue. The job of recording pictorially and verbally the events of the year is no easy task. The spirit with which the an- ; nual staff attacks this task exemplifies the spirit of the entire student body. It has been through the efforts and loyalty of the hundreds of students that have passed through these doors that the Wa-Hi heritage hasevolved. This year, each one of you has upheld and added to this heritage. Your continued determination in acquiring knowledge and in practicing the principles of good citizenship will serve you well. Allen L. Reynolds Assistant Superintendent All of us can be proud of Wa-Hi, its students and its graduates. For the past six years, more than fifty per cent of the graduates have entered college; others have gone to hospitals for nurse’s training, into military serv¬ ice, or to work on farms, stores, service stations, etc. The fine background of training acquired at Wa-Hi has con¬ tributed to the excellent work being done by these graduates. Seniors, our best wishes go with you. For the 1955 Homecoming, the cabinet introduced some new ideas. For the clubs contribution to the Home coming festivities, they set up stationary floats on the school grounds. A serpentine through town to Borleske Field was held the night before the game. A huge bon¬ fire—lighted by the torch of the Senior Class runners— and pep rally were high lights of the evening. The dedication of the Circle Theater in memory of Marshall Alexander and the establishment of a trophy to be awarded in his memory each year at graduation to an outstanding speech student were among Cabinet projects. The Cabinet has been trying this year to lay a foundation for better student government. The A.S.B became a member of the National Association of Stu¬ dent Councils. Plans were made to have an annual meet¬ ing of the Student Councils of the area to discuss mutual problems. The Cabinet is again sponsoring two delegates to the Northwest Student Leadership Training Conference. A.S.B. TICKET SALES. Row U Cherri Baker, Edith Rahn, Darlene Hanley, Patty Malcolm. The of¬ ficers and cabinet strived to unify the girls as one happy family. The biggest project for the busy year was the planning and pre¬ senting of Tn-State, which was held April 27 and 28 in Walla Walla. This convention was held for the sole purpose of promoting better re¬ lationship among the schools attending. Under the capable president, Sue Gilmore, Tri-State was both successful and beneficial. A new honorary organization, Crest, was formed with wish-bone holders as members. Crest’s aim is to encourage all girls to participate in Federation activities. Other activities included in the extensive program were: an enter¬ taining assembly every month, transfer dinner, and a Christmas parly. Special thanks go to Mrs. Esary for her patience and guidance throughout the year. This year’s Girls’ Federation was a credit to the school and com¬ munity. Mrs. Esary r. lathsi! Gene Tea Oun Cheenleadenz Promoted Under the advisorship of Mr. Keith Crosbie, the Wa-Hi Yell Squad undertook many activities during the ’55- 56 school year. To promote school spirit and sportsmanship among the students, the Yell Squad gave many pep assemblies. One enjoyed by everyone was the Homecoming pep assembly. Several out-of-town trips were enjoyed by the Yell Squad during both football and basketball season. One of the highlights of basketball season included Beryl Barer, who served as mascot for the squad. Spont manlike Conduct The Song Leaders had another busy year as they were seen enthusi¬ astically leading songs at our many sports events. Many of the spectators attending the football and basketball games saw the new routines originated by this group and heard new songs. The Song Leaders, under the supervision of Mr, Crosbie, worked closely with the Yell Squad and the pep band and helped lend school spirit at our many games. The next Blue Devil encounter was with North Central of Spokane which Wa-Hi won 27-19 This game saw r Tom Page score two tallies and guard Melvin Hill grab an Indian fumble and dash 55 yards for a touch¬ down. Homecoming saw the Blue Devils rally to retain the “Little Brown Jug ' ’ at they defeated the speedy Ya¬ kima Pirates 13-7. Wa-Hi suffered an attack of fumblei- tis but struck pay dirt more often than the Pirates and that is what counted October 28, the Blue Devils, rated as the number one team in the state, traveled to Spokane to meet the Lewis and Clark Tigers. Troubled by a field in deep sawdust, the Blue and White fell prey to the Tigers 12-6 Wa-HPs final game of the season was played at Richland in sub-zero weather The Richland Bombers look advantage of some bad breaks for the Blue Devils and won 13-0. The Blue Devils had a conference total of 1530 net yards gained while holding the opposition 1031 yards. The Blue and White averaged 249 yards per game against their opponents ' 206 Halfback, Gene Bates, was named to the Conference All Star 1st team Full¬ back, Tom Page, and Brent W r ooten, Quarterback, were named to the 2nd team. 7 he Wa-Hi Blue Deutfa Showed Qood Spontamanihip The Richland Boml ers was the only unbeatable team on the BJue Devil ' s schedule this season. Wa-Hi dropped two games to the Rombes while split¬ ting with Kennewick, Yakima, Pasco, Pendleton, Lewiston, and Wenatchee. Coach Wooten ' s boys used their fast break quite effectively in also de¬ feating North Central, John Rogers, West Valley, Ephrata, and the Clark- ston Bantams twice to compile a seasonal record of 12 wins and 8 losses. The Blue Devils advanced to the district playoffs in Moses Lake by taking the Eastern Washington Sub-District Championship defeating Col¬ ville, Chenney, and Pullman, only to lose a trip to the state tournament in Seattle by bowing to Moses Lake in the finals. It was the first time the Blue Devils didn ' t make the trek to Seattle in nine years. t Although Wa-Hi will be losing Richard Huff, Dick Anderson, and Robin Beck, and Bill Weber, they should have a good team next year with the return of Wooten, Hays, Johnston, Smith, Banks, and Farley, The team played good ball and gained valuable experience for next year. 8-SQUAD. They won 14 of their 17 starts and at the same time completed 142 runs to 74 for all opposition. The highlight of the Wa-Hi season was the taking of a doubleheader from the Yakima Pirates. Until they met the Blue and White, Yakima was undefeated in 16 games. Wa-Hi dropped two of their three losses to Lewiston. As in previous years the Bengals were strong, for in the first meeting Ron Shoemaker pitched a one-hit 8-0 win for the Idaho hosts. The two Afs of the pitching staff, Al Wetzel with 7 wins and 1 loss and Al Jentzsch, 6 wins and 2 losses carried most of the pitching load during the course of the sea¬ son; junior Bill Weber won one game while losing none. Darrell Morton with a nifty .442 batting average led the Blue Devil regulars at the plate. Last year ' s leader, Brent Wooten, added 9 points to his average over the pre¬ ceding season, but wound up sec¬ ond with a .404 mark. Shortstop Phil Stoller with .333 and Lee Baker with .300 round out those who fin¬ ished at the .300 mark or above. 808 BECKEL, Caprain ROBIN BECK Al JENTZSCH GARY BANKS GERWYN JONES PH It STOLLER COACH RICHARDSON MARVIN HORN and ____ BILL EMERT Altogether, the Wa-Hi batters collected 134 hits for a team average of .296. The Wa-Hi infield consisted of Robin Beck at first, Wayne Lee at second, Stoller at shortstop, and Gary Banks at third. Roaming the outer gardens were from left to right: Morton, Beckel, and Baker. Wooten did the majority of the catching, but Gerwyn Jones was a more than capable replacement when Lee wrenched his knee and a shuffle in the lineup was necessary. Utility infielders, Moe Miller and outfielders Paul Hayes, and Dick Wright will be returning. NAME 9 ab r h 2b 36 hr rbi av. Next came the Mac-Hi speed carnival, which saw this same Pendleton outfit win unofficially by a large margin. Because of rain, the scheduled WS.C Invitational was not held as planned the day after the Mac-Hi affair The Devils traveled to Richland for a dual meet with the Bombers and came out on top 77Va-4 In the annual Wa-Hi Relays at Borleske field, Yakima cams out ahead for the second straight year over Wa-Hi 84-53. Yakima, who won the state meet at Pullman, possessed a phenomenal track team this year. Wa-Hi had the misfortune to go against them several times throughout the season. After the Relays, the Blue Devil fhindads grabbed a third in the Yakima Invitational and a second in a Triangular meet with Yakima and Richland. Coaches Felix Fletcher and Chuck McBride sent their sophomores and juniors against the Dayton Bulldogs twice during the year and came out far ahead both times. May 13, Wa-Hi ran away from the pack in the annual District meet with 9 of the possible 14 blue ribbons and 69 5 6 points, Pullman, their nearest competitor, came up with 2BV r 2 and one blue ribbon. The Blue Devils p ossessed three double winners. Gene Bates copped firsts in both sprints as well as running a leg on the winning relay quartet, while Stan Lang ton took both hurdle events and Howard Aldrich the high jump and broad jump, Roger Steiner in the 880 and Darrell Morton in the javelin rounded out the 9 first places. Thirteen Wa-Hi cindermen qualified for the Tri-District competition in Spokane the following week, Wa-Hi qualified three men for the State meet in the Tri-Districts. Morton broke his own record and one of the 5 Wa-Hi holds of 170 ' 1 Vs in the javelin by winging the spear 178 ' 8 . Langton ' s third in the high hurdles and Bates ' third in the 220 sent them to the State meet in Pullman, Wa Hi ' s 17 points in the Tri-District tied them with Central Valley for third, Wa-Hi won a coin toss to take possession of a trophy, In the State meet Morton tossed the javelin 184 ' 7 8 , the longest heave of his career, for a first place medal and the only Blue Devil points of the day. His heave was good enough to place Wa-Hi 14th in the meet.
