The 1953 Varsity football team, led by Captain John Hergert, coached by Felix Fletcher and John Klumb, and managed by Dick Gohlman and Paul Dague, went through the season with two wins, three ties, and four losses. John Hergert was named to the Alt State team with George Sullivan as alternate The best summary of the nine game run is that of Dick Mobley, who said in part, This year’s team played good football; maybe not the game people have been used to seeing of previous Wa-Hi teams, but they played and learned a lot about football and sportsmanship. {A goo d sport knows how to lose as well as how to win.)” Wa-Hi 12 „ --Sunnyside 6 Wa-Hi 19 - -- Wenatchee 0 Wa-Hi 19 -——— John Rogers 19 Wa-Hi 14 - Gonzaga 14 Wa-Hi 7 ---- — Richland 7 Wa-Hi 6 . ... These two hard-hitting representatives of the Blue Devils battle during the football season with their respective opponents; and while sometimes they don’t rate as much attention as the Varsity, their victories are applauded and their losses mourned by all of Wa-Hi. The 1953 season saw the B s with three wins and four losses, while the Frosh came through with flying colors, winning six games and losing only one. 22
