dedication When it comes to the time when an annual must be dedicated, those in charge are faced with a truly heavy responsibility. They must select not only someone who has done some job or service well enough to deserve the honor, but someone with whom the students will be pleased. For this reason, the Royal Blue does not have a dedication each year. The staff this year, however, feels that the person they have chosen is worthy of the highest praise and regard for her never-ending contributions, not only to the yearbook, but to the school. It is with the greatest pleasure and pride that we, the staff members, dedicate the 1954 ROYAL BLUE to our adviser, MISS RUTH GRAY! v jl . ip ya 1 fc. Presented W . Use the past only in so far as it is useful in the future Your Wa-Ht experience is going to be useful in the future because of your academic achievement, your participation in various activities, and your development of leadership and good citizenship, I sincerely hope that your future is bright and that you will not forget soon the days you spent in Wa-Hi, The friendships developed here, both with faculty members and classmates, will have even greater value to you in the years to come, Arthur D, Jones, Superintendent Each passing year brings me closer to our school and its traditions. The Royal Blue captures these thoughts and feelings, preserving them for posterity. It actually is a Treasure Chest of facts and memories that mellow through the years. It is important that our achievements are good ones as they go on record for all to see as the years go by, Fm proud of our accomplishments this year. We have overcome many obstacles and turned them into successes. Congratulations to a fine senior class. May you be happy and successful always. Robert Klavano, Principal. Wa-Hi has a rich heritage. For many years, the stu- dents and faculty, through their continued loyalty and initiative, have made this school one of the outstanding high schools in the state. During the past year, you students have added materially to this heritage by your good citizenship, scholarship, and your wholehearted par- ddpation in worth-while activities. Congratulations to the staff of the Royal Blue who have again given so generously their time to create a lasting record of pleasant memories and enduring friend¬ ships; and ro the seniors for your record of outstanding achievement—keep up the good work. Allen Reynolds, Administrative Assistant. One of the big events of the year is RB Day ; in other words the day that the Royal Blue is distributed to the students, The eagerness with which everyone awaits this day attests to the popularity of the school annual. The Staff deserves a great deal of credit for performing a very great school service. The annual is a fine record of the school year, with its activities and accomplishments. Each of us might ask the same question; What is my record? Did l achieve all that I wished to achieve? Were my exper¬ iences valuable for training in citizenship? What are my hopes and plans for the future? Did I help make Walla Walla High School the fine school that it is today? W. G. The Associated Student Body Cabinet met during the last two weeks of summer vacation for a meeting which came about as a very interesting, informative, and enter¬ taining planning session for the opening assembly on the second day of school. The product of this meeting was a very well thought-out and vivacious skit which introduced, to the student body, the governing officers of the 53- 54 year and the newly acquired faculty members. The officers introduced were President Tom Leonard,- Vice President Dick Mobley, Secretary Elsie Filan, and Treasurer Carlene Frank. The Cabinet was also introduced at this time, and its commissioners are: Joe Bergevin, Build¬ ings and Grounds; Ron Roscow, Halls; Annette Cote, Inter- school Relations; Don Cline, Stage; Eddie Epstein, Publicity; Scott Gruber, Chief Justice; Carolyn Reynolds, Organiza¬ tions; Alice Ross, Assemblies; Don Shafer, Fire Chief. Two more extremely important projects were taken on and well accomplished by the cabinet. These were the organization of Wa-Hi drivers and arrangements for counsel and guidance for students who are in need of such. They compiled and issued the Student Questionnaire which asked personal questions of the stu¬ dents and which resulted in the recognition of the need for a Recreation Center, other than the Shuf¬ fle Shop This thought was presented to various city clubs, and it is our hope that they will do some¬ thing with the idea These young people leave Wa-Hi with a record of accomplishment not soon to be forgotten Much of the credit goes to A.S.B. Again this year the Boys’ Federation presented the noon movie program, which proved to be very successful. The movie schedule ran from mid-November to late March and aided great¬ ly in cutting down the congestion in the halls during the winter months The Aims shown in¬ cluded: Father Was a Fullback;’ The Day the Earth Stood Still” Call Northside 777 ” Ticket to Tomahawk;’ Miracle on 34th Street,” Slattery’s Hurricane,” Jim Thorpe, All- American,” David and Bathsheba,” Treasure of Sierra Madre,” Monkey Business,” Break¬ through,” Mr, 880,” Bird of Paradise,” The Frogmen,” The Jackie Robinson Story,” and With a Song in My Heart ” Finances gained by the program enabled the Federation to buy a new screen, speaker, and projector to be used in the auditorium. They also bought a blond- wood drop-leaf table for the Girls’ Federation to use for teas and other social events. The intramural program was well organized and directed by Jim Hopkins, Intramuraly Manager. Awards were given to the members of the championship teams in all the sports played. 16 )r(janization . the ()3oijS J 33ederation. The activities of the band were divided into two parts: the marching band and the concert band As a marching band, they played for the centennial celebration at the Fair, several parades, military reviews and the halftime programs for six football games. They also traveled to Pullman and Richland. The concert band played their first concert for an audience of parents in November They then played two other concerts, one with Raphael Mendez as the guest artist As usual the band has had a full schedule of events in performing for community and school functions and providing a pep band for basketball games. The majorettes and flagswingers represent the glamorous side of the band’s activities These girls are on hand whenever the band marches and were a main attraction in the football and basketball half-time pageants The Orchestra, under the direction of Clarence Cassell, has almost complete instrumentation for a symphony with forty-six members signed up for credit. The orchestra plays for all the school plays, operettas, combined concerts, and gives a spring concert of its own 26 ' lAJhat would School Spirit he without the ijell Scj uadd Thud Row i Ed Carte , Chubby Reiswjg Second Row: Gloria Hayes, Gene Hume t First Row: Bill Anpefson, Ronnie Lou N alder. Returning with them to the squad were juniors Ronnie Lou Nalder and Bill An¬ derson, while the newly elected members were Gloria Hayes and Gene Hume, also juniors. Little Stevie Reiswig served as mascot. With the help of their new adviser, Mr. Keezel, the squad undertook many activities. The organization of the Homecoming parade was one of their main projects. This included making signs, arranging for convertibles for the royalty, and inviting alumni to ride in the parade. Pep assemblies during the foot¬ ball and basketball seasons were planned by the yell squad and the school clubs, Coach, Team,” With a Big W” and Devil ' s Drone” were some of the new yells for this year. The boys on the squad changed their uniforms this year. They are now white-letterman sweaters and white cords with navy tee shirts and shoes. 27 (Upper Uft } Annette Cote and Dick Mobley. The past year has been a very enjoyable one for those who have attended the Shuffle Shop. The commissioners this year were all seniors, without the underclass representation there had been in past years. This method was adopted last year and proved so successful that it will be continued in the fu tore. Chita Cousins, Suffle Shop commissioner appointed by our student body president, along with Ed Carter, Terry Tucker, and Ron Reihl, commissioners elected by the students, and Miss Kamm of the YWCA, were the ones responsible for organizing the 53-54 activities. Nine school service clubs alternate in decorating the Shuffle Shop through the nine school months. The decorations this year have been very impressive, with those of Christmas and the Hi-Y slave mark¬ et being considered the best. The club which gave the most service to the Shuffle Shop was given a plaque at the end of the school year. Coach Wooten looked down at the trosh and B squads for top flight material to bring up for experience during the season. Though the Blue Devil team of 55-54 was one of the shortest in years, Wa-Hi played a spectacular season with ball hawking, sharp shoot ing, and fast break tactics. The Blue Devils opened their regular season by defeating the Wenatchee Panthers 41 -24. Bob Becker and Clyde Catron led Wa-Hi with !3 and 10 points respectively. Then a tall Sunnyside team edged Wa-Hi 47-46. The Devils were playing without Bob Pouts, who was benched because of illness. Returning home, Wa-Hi defeated three Spokane teams, John Rogers, Lewis and Clark, and West Val¬ ley, The North Central Indians then scalped the Devils as they took home a 58-53 victory. From then on the Devils went wild outshooting, outplaying, and outscoring all competition. The regular season win streak went to 14 straight. The highest scoring game for the Devils w T as a 73-34 victory over the Pullman Greyhounds. Bob Becker took game honors with 19 points. A 72-54 w r m over the Colville Indians almost duplicated the 72 point mark against West Valley. As the regular season drew ' to a close, the Clarkston Bantams almost knocked Wa-Hi’s win streak in the red. The Blue Devils came out on top in the 46-44 free- for-alL Wa-Hi captured the District Tournament in Wenatchee and earned the single entry to the State Tournament by defeating Cashmere and Central Valley, During the second week of March, the Devils traveled to the State Tournament for the 25th time in 30 years. After losing their first tourney game to Auburn 60-50, the Devils went ahead to defeat Renton 53-39, Vancouver 56-48, and finally Montesano 63-60, to take fifth place in the tournament. Bob Beckel, junior guard, proved to be consistent in his scoring and totaled 49 points. Captain Bob Becker totaled 48 points and played good enough ball to be chosen guard on the second all-state team. Putting on half time entertainment at two basketball games, doing their part of the P.E, demonstration, and originating the yearly project of presenting an assembly were their major highlights Included in these programs were for¬ ward and backward flips, assist backflips, forward and backward rolls, forward and backward band springs, head springs, and head stands. The team used a springboard, also, which aided them in some of their very thrilling stunts The assembly put on for the Student Body started with all the boys demonstrating their in¬ terpretation of a caterpillar. This is new this year and quite delicate, for if any one person gets off one step it will topple the caterpillar over on its side. Many thrills came next, ending with Darrel! Besides their curricular program, the students at Wa-Hi have a very full activity schedule. Some of the activi¬ ties that this program includes are school service clubs, that meet on al¬ ternate Tuesdays and do the school and the community a great deal of service; ROTC Drill Team, Flags wing¬ ers, Sponsors, and Majorettes, who spend a great deal of time preparing to entertain us at football games, pa rades, and many other public affairs; and Girls and Boys Federations, which contribute much to our school government. One of the outstanding activities of Wa Hi this year was the trip to Seattle for State Tournament. The band, along with the basketball team and many stu¬ dents, went to Seattle to support our team. Our sports program also in¬ cludes football, baseball, track, and tumbling, in which many students par¬ ticipate. 71 DL Bi lue The Bible says, “In all labor there is profit, and judg¬ ing by the books that have been published through their efforts, this statement can well be applied to the stall of the Royal Blue. It has been, for most of us, a year of happiness and goals achieved; a year of ideals and ambitions realized. In the fu¬ ture as you look back on it, may this book serve as a chronicle of the happenings that meant so much to all of us. May it be a record of your joys and triumphs, and even of some of the more sorrowful moments; for life has its bitter as well as its sweet. We hope that you will never forget Wa-Hi and all it stands for; that you will always remember the friends you met and the things you did here, for they have become an irrevocable chapter in your life and in the history of this school. The Wa-Hi Blue Devil can well be proud of the , 53- , 54 year, for it has been one of accomplishment and satisfaction. 1 Lm da Stani Olor id. 2i ' tt«.r opf Vond.cc BcaUnqee tfittic f A i.rte Ar buck It Lta Stf mUkr Janice Ta.chibo.na fSAarilun .DC .Janice. tWer V ryiuiu M ' SS (jrQ. .
