EDITOR PICTURE EDITOR ART EDITOR PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR BUSINESS MANAGERS Ruthie McLean Carol Neisess Nancygayl Welch Frances Blackman Bill Patterson Barbara Weathers Shirley Eddy ADVISER Miss Ruth Gray $tcz Kindness, inspiration, and understanding all make up the friendly guy whom we know as Mr. Reed. As a symbol of appreciation, we the students of Wa-Hi, dedicate to you upon your retirement, Paul M. Reed, our yearbook. As you turn its pages may they hold memories which will re¬ main in your heart. We wish you many happy years in the future and express our deepest gratitude for the serv¬ ice you have rendered toward the betterment of Walla Walla High School, as head of the science department, as Hi-Y and Science Club adviser, and as a friend to all the faculty and students since you first taught here in 1924. From, the bottom of our hearts. Good Luck! Photo by ROBERGE It has been said that they liked the city of Walla Walla so well, they named it twice !t seems to me the same applies to the Walla Walla High School, Your school is a community within a community Not only are you as students in the high school learning to be good citizens, you are being citizens in your school government and in other student activities, and in your academic work as well. Your transition from your school community to your adult community will be the easier because of your participation and accomplishments in Wa-Hi. To the graduating Seniors a sincere wish that you will be as proud of your community as you are of the Walla Walla High School ARTHUR D. JONES, Supf. of Schoo s A high school is a community within a community. Moreover, It is usually the best little civic group to be found in the average city. Where will you find an organized group of twelve hundred people in Walla Walla, or any other city, in which there is a level of conduct as high, or less dirty work at the crossroads? Cities are justly proud of their high schools In them are found the vitality, aspirations and cleanness that too many of the elders have used up and thrown away. The pride shown by you students in the good name of your school is most commendable. No one can beat down our schools if you keep your guard up. Good Luckl W. A. LACEY, Asst, Supt. of Schoo s The achievements for the past nine months have been outstanding. Teamwork and co-operation of students and teachers have been the pri¬ mary factors in these accomplishments. Best wishes for the future, Seniors. Keep up your fine work. W, G. LEDBETTER, Asst. Principal The basis for school spirit is loyalty to one ' s school. Sometimes we are too much inclined to rest on our laurels, Because Wa-Hi has been an outstanding school in the past is no reason that it will continue to be, unless each student and faculty member makes a continual effort. I am very much pleased with the business-like way school has progressed this year. It Is encouraging to see the students take and handle responsibility in their student government. We are fortunate in having outstanding student leaders. Our activities have been highly successful and will give future students a goal to attain. Congratulations to a fine Senior class, and may you have much success and happiness. To both students and faculty, whatever we do as a school, may we do it well, ROBERT P, KLAVA NO, P rind pal Again the treat of the year is the Royal Blue with its record of the activities and events of 1951-52. Congratulations to the staff for a job well done. Reminiscence of the school year recalls many pleasant and happy as¬ sociations and memories of another successful term. The students are to be commended upon their growing interest in and assumption of more responsibility in handlin g their own government, the training ground for adult participation in our democratic way of life, The Faculty has ambitions and secret hopes for the School and Students, MARSHALL ALEXANDER Speech and Dramatics DONALD ANDERSON Commercial, Bookkeeping for A S.B MARK BERNEY Carpentry GENEVIEVE BERRY Study Hall CAL BOYES Social Science, Baseball Coach MARALYN BROWN Secretary to Mr. Jones JULIANA DRAPER Social Science RALPH EMIGH Mathematics RONALD FLE5HMAN Military, Girls ' 1 Rifle Corps ALFRED FULTON Military, Boys ' Rifle Corps JOHN ANDERSON Social Science, Audio Visual, Freshman Class Adviser B, £. Girls Federation develops character , companionship , and confidence To bring all girl students closer together, to solve problems, and make Wa-Hi a more friendly comfortable place to be, are the purposes of Girls ' Federation, These ideas have been ably carried out under the leadership of the Girls ' Fed. officers. Fed. Activities range from assemblies to frolics to teas to plays to potluck dinners. The year began with the redecoration of the Girls ' Lounge, begun during the ' 51 summer and continued through the year. First on the agenda was the get-acquainted frolic to welcome all Frosh and transfers, co-sponsored by the Federations, September ' s assembly—our first meeting—was a candle light installation ceremony for the new cabinet and our new Girls ' Counselor, Mrs. Tom Esary who has counseled, encouraged,, and understood us throughout the year. In October, Girls ' Fed, began an annual Halloween Party. November: Armlda Alexander wrote the religious theme script for a very successful Thanksgiving Assembly. Also in November a potluck dinner was held for all the new transfer students. December: Janice McGowan put us in the Christmas spirit with her lovely assembly. t p Barrett, f A 0 D e S rbawk3 . B. In April the Fed, and the Home Economics depart¬ ment presented the annual spring style show, and gave a tea for mothers afterwards. Junior girls worked to make this year ' s Senior Tea a huge success. In May, the installation of new officers was held and the old officers sard goodbye to their high school and their—friends. 0 y S federation promotes friendship, fellowship, and fun. The Boys Federation turned in a very successful year under the able supervision of Mr, Ledbetter, Dean of Boys, The year got under way with a Freshman frolic which was presented by the Boys ' and Girls 1 Federations. Wa-Hi ' s future Freshmen from the grade schools were welcomed in the spring by Boys ' Federation, A guided tour was conducted and refreshments were served. An assembly was held every month with many interesting programs featured including a movie and special program by the game department. The members of Boys 1 Federation also enjoyed a basketball game between the intramural all-stars and the faculty, A special project this year was writing letters to boys absent from school with the purpose of encouraging them back to school. This was ably carried out by Orville Kiehm The intramurals program was carried out by LeRoy Kelly. His duty was to care for the equipment, schedule the games to be played, publish the results, and determine the championship team. A trophy was awarded the winning team at the end of the school year. They were proud of their class and sorry to leave their high school days behind, but eager to see what the future held. Leading this year ' s class as first semester officers were; Chuck Stone, President; Karl Schwarz, Vice President; Ralph Stearns, Secretary; and Gladys McKinnon, Treasurer. For the second semester, Frank Kimball served as President; Richard Proctor as Vice President; Glenna Dunham as Secretary; and Bob Spearman as Treasurer. Senior class Representatives on the student court were Ned Lange, Chief Justice; Joan McClane, first semester; and Elsie Drumheller, second semester. Sometimes activities take precedence over homework, but Emma Jean Barrett and Marlyn Plankenhorn, with 3.9 averages, kept the class scholastic record at the top of the books. In all, 40 members of the Senior class experienced the thrill of being tapped for National Honor Society; OFFICERS—F. Kimball, R. Stearns, K. Schwarz, R. Proctor, B Spearman, C. Slone, G. This award the chapter has won for two consecutive years. This enabled the Walla Walla Chapter to enter the National Chapter Contest where the chapter ranked among the top twenty in the Nation. Receiving this award for the chapter were three boys from Walla Walla, Richard Owsley, Richard Deffenbaugh and Jerry Still, who attended the National Convention held in Kansas City, Mis¬ souri. The members of the team elected Chuck Stone first string all state center, as their Captain, Later he was named the best high school center in the United States by Scholastic Magazine. Chuck is the second Wa-Hi boy to win this high honor in recent years. Ray Needham won the inspirational player award. Traditionally, the Wa-Hi Blue Devils started the season against the Pasco Bulldogs at the letters home gridiron. The Devils romped at will over Pasco with Cox, Gwinn, Young, McAllister, Johnson, and Decker scoring. The final score was 46—0. In the second shut out victory for the Blue Devils, Wenatchee fell before the Blue Boys 26—0. Eddy Gwinn, fullback, scored twice, Bobby Spearman sprinted over the diagonals and Don Hartwig snagged a Cox Special for the last tally. North Central traveled to Walla Walla only to be beaten by the powerful Blue Devils, 18—6. This game was one of the hardest according to many of the players. Another long pass to Don Hartwig scored six points and Gwinn and Derby pounded over for the second and third tallies. Chuck Stone stood out as the star defensive line¬ backer. Walla Walla traveled to Sunnyside to settle an argument between themselves and the Grizzlies. The Sunnyside eleven fell to the stronger, faster Devils, 24—0, Dean Derby, Junior left halfback, scored twice. Eddy Gwinn, old standby, racked up a big six and Don Hartwig scored also. The closest game of the year, from a scoring stand¬ point, came from a strong and determined Richland team. The final score of the game read 19—14 in favor of Walla Walla. Spearman and Derby tucked in long Cox passes and Gwinn plunged through the line to score. First row: T. Leonard, L. Lemke, L, Foss, D. Jansen, D, Hall, J. Lloyd, W, Kuhn, J. Hergert, R. Hussey, R. The Gonzaga team was very underrated and though hey were small they were fast and deceptive. The muddy field hindered the Devils. The score stood at 12—6 with Wa-Hi getting the nod. Dean Derby and Eddy Gwinn scored the touchdowns. Cox played a good game as did Bobby Spearman. Walla Walla defeated the Lewis and Clark Tigers 23-13 in a Borleske Field thriller. Bob Cox, star quarterback threw three touchdown passes; two went into the wide spread arms of left end Don Hartwig and Dean Derby, left half gathered in another. The Little Brown Jug, an old tradition between Walla Walla and the Yakima Pirates was regained by the Blue Devils as they defeated Yakima 37-0. This was Wa-Hi ' s annual homecoming game in which Bobby Spearman played one of his best games of the year. During the season the Devils scored 237 points while holding opponents to a diminutive 39. Wa-Hi averaged 26 points per game as the other schools scored an average of 4. Wa-Hi blanked five teams. In the associated press poll Wa-Hi ' ost by one point to Ballard of Seattle as the state champion. Alt State center Harlow Tucker headed the vets and also captained the team. Other Blue Devil fetter winners who returned to the maples were Jack McAllister, Denny Michaelson, Jim Oury, Bob Spearman, Mert McGrew, Del Klicker, and Bob Cox Dave Klicker, Dear! Derby, and Don Hartwig, Juniors, made valuable substitutes. At the start of the season the starting lineup usually was Cox and Klicker at guards, McAllister and Spearman at forwards and Harlow Tucker at center. Later, big 6 ' 5 center Denny Michaelson was shifted into the center or for¬ wards positions alternating with Bob Spearman. The Devils took nine straight games from tough opposition in this vicinity Wa-HI copped the annual Jamboree and also beat Wenatchee, Yakima, John Rogers, Lewis and Clark, Pasco, and Pulfmap before being edged out at Central Valley 51—47. However the Demons soon regained their stride and went on to defeat Richland and Clarkston and return matches with Pasco and Pullman. The biggest victory of the regular season came when the Coubabes of Wash¬ ington State College traveled to Wa-Hi to be clubbed to the tune of 38—33, although Wa-Hi played without Harlow Tucker who injured his elbow in the return match with Clarkston. Early in January the Blue Devils were at the top of the Associated Press Poll 60 points ahead of the nearest rival, Lewis and Clark At that time a strong Port Angeles team was in third place. By the first of February the Port Angeles team had trimmed the Wa-Hi lead and merged ahead by some 18 points. However this poll was taken before the thrilling W.S.C game. During the second game with Wenatchee the Blue Boys, who now had Tucker back, ran up an impressive 70 points against 37 scored by the Red Apple Team. First row: C. Branson, J. Weaver, T. Tucker, K. The Bantams put up a stronq bid for victory, but in the third quarter Wa-Hi, led by Bob Spearman, pulled the game out of the fire by the score of 54—40. The next night the Blue Devils played at Lewiston and continued their win¬ ning ways by swamping the Bengals to the tune of 59—39, Del Klicker led the scorers for the night with 21 points. Wa-Hi got revenge in their last game of the season by beating the Central Valley Bears. They had to play without Harlow Tucker in this game and the play was close all the way, but never gave up the lead after the first few minutes. Sub-Drsfr ct Tournament at Waif a Walla Wa-Hi won their first tournament game by Taking Clarkston 65-44. Clarkston led all through the first quarter, but the ball hawking of Klicker and the combined shooting of the rest of the team brought the Wootenmen fronr behind and led the way to victory. The following night the Blue Devils won the Sub-District championship by beating Central Valley 62-35. Wa-Hi played steady half most of the game until the fourth quarter when they doubled the score. District Tournament at Wenatchee By beating Omak 53-30 and Clarkston 79-32, In which Harlow Tucker, team Captain, was high point man with 24 points, the Devils won the District Championship, They will go to Seattle March 13, 14, and 15 to compete in the State Tournament. Officers are: Beatrice Hill, President; Sally Cole, Vice President; Marilyn Yenney, Secretary; Myrna Porter, Treasurer; and Betty Ruth Bradley, Publicity, Girls in this club have the privilege of earning points toward their letters. During the first semester Margaret Brennan was the only one earning her school letter, but four girls were awarded their state emblem. Some activities that this group planned were two initiation parties, taking their turn to care for the Shuffle Shop, and a basketball playday. AH Freshman and Sophomore girls exhibited their skills to the general public at the annual P,E. demonstration, February 21, Those who watched were proud of them and proud of what the Girls ' Sports program is doing for interschoo! relations, for public relations, and for the girls. 104 Volleyball Tennis Speedball Basketball Ping-pong Shuffleboard Badminton Dancing Softball W. W. A. LACEY, a modest man who has served Walla Walla Schools since 1921, announced his resig¬ nation this spring to the sorrow of the Wa-Hi student body. Mr. Lacey was Principal of Wa-HE for fifteen years and Superintendent of the Public Schools of Walla Walla for fourteen years at the end of which time he retired to administrative assistant for two years. During these thirty-one years he has seen school im¬ provements made, many of which he has suggested or supervised. The campus has added thirteen pieces of property: the gym and agriculture buildings, and numerous shrubs. When he first came to Wa-Hi there were one and a half vocal and instrumental teachers. All athletics were coached by one man who also taught P.E, Guidance and audio visual programs have been developed as well as an extensive extra-curricular activity program. Milestones have been passed, new marks have been in favor of Walla Walla High School through the interest and intentions of Mr. Lacey. We belie ve hts record partially illustrates the reasons ' the students don ' t want him to leave his and their school. Perhaps the other part is that Mr. Lacey benefits any school, any organization, or any person with whom he comes tn contact. He is and has been a true friend to Walfa Walla, §fcjfid9 e tk rner r y r sSSv £ H g C“ - sr« -. The girls played Hermiston, Pendleton, and Pasco Because of rain a return match with Hermiston was not held. Although they lost all games this year, an exceptional team is expected for next year. The Wa-Hi boys ' tenpis team had a successful season under the coaching of Mr. John Anderson. Matches were held against Pendleton, Hermiston, Pasco, and Richland. Victories were scored over Pendleton and Richland, with a match with Hermiston ending in a tie and a lone defeat being scored by the Pasco Bulldogs over the Wa-Hi team. The Devils led 7—2 once in the first quarter, 17—9 after the start of the second but 7 minutes and 44 seconds without a score on the part of the Blue team enabled the Bulldogs to tie the score 17—17 at the half. The Wooten men grabbed the lead again in the third quarter until the last minute with the quarter score being 30—28, Ellensburg, The fourth quarter began with Ellensburg a little more than matching Wa-Hi ' s baskets. Wa-Hi led 44 to 43 with 1 Vi minutes to play, when Spearman and McAllister scored the final 4 points. Spearman was the spark that kept the Devils aflame throughout the contest. Wednesday, with little trouble, Wa-Hi won 63—42 over Blaine, with the second string playing most of the second half. This was Tucker ' s game with 19 points, although the whole team looked good and loomed up as the tournament favorite more strongly. The Devils took Longview 60 to 48 on Thursday, mainly by out¬ running the Lumberjacks, Tucker led the scoring with 20 points and McAllister was a close second with 16. Cox also played a fine game. To a much slower pace the Devils took Yakima, 40—28 in the least outstanding game. Tucker again took scoring honors with 16 points, Cox finished with 10. State @ka mpA ' This team of 1952 is considered by many to be the outstanding team in the history of Wa Hi, if not in the history of state high school tournament play. Every man played as well as was possible under the strain -and every man on the starting five and others on the second team came through at one time or another to spur his team on. Tucker, unanimously named to the all-state team for the second year, scored high for tournament play with 73 points. Some have said Tucker was one of the greatest five in tournament history. McAllister, on the all-stare second team, showed polish during the .entire tournament. His scoring totaled 41. Spearman, who would have been named on one of the all-state teams if the balloting had not taken place before the championship, played steadily all through the tournament. Bob Cox, also chosen for the first team of a Instate, shows the traits that make him an outstanding athlete now, with a great future. Klicker, named on the third ail-state team, inspired the team all season, only tcf be hindered by a cold during tournament play. Nevertheless Little Del proved a pest to the opposition and a trigger man on defense. The team had everything, but tflvo of the most important things wer e a coach with know how and a school with spirit behind them. This team and this tournament and this coach and the feeling of school unity are something to remember always. 1 B. SPEARMAN B- BECKEL i. OURY j. HERGERT P. DAGUE D. SEELY Managers D. DECKER D. Sopho¬ more Hurler John Hergert limited the Kennewick Lions to one hit and hit a home run to win his own ball game. Wa-Hi then dropped two to Yakima 7—6 and 3—1, Then Wa-Hi beat Clarkston 5—0, Rich Proctor limited them to one hit. Spearman led the hitters with two hits. The Blue Devils divided a pair with Lewiston 4—3 and 16—0, Dave Page, speedy center fielder, led the hitters in the first game with two hits. In the second game Dick Decker got the only hit of the game for the Devils. This was the first year for Coach Cal Boyes who turned in a creditable job. Hell be back next year with the boys remaining after Dick Decker, Dave Page, Bob Spearman, Del Cilk, Mert McGrew, Dean Lodmell, Rich Proctor, Jim Oury, and Del Klicker graduate. Coaches Fletcher and McBride took nine men to the state classic and of these Bob Cox retained his state track title and Dick Turner turned in a near record toss to run away with the javelin championship. Dean Derby placed fourth in the 100 yard dash and the Wa-Hl relay team placed the same to end the Wa-Hi scoring. The Blue Demons were undefeated in dual meets during the year but battled all year long in group meets with John Rogers Pirates, The Pirates scored victories of less than 3 points over Wa-Hi in both the Yakima and Pullman invitational meets. At both these meets our Dick Turner threw the javelin to make new records. The Tri-District meet saw practically all the eastern schools sending contingents to Spokane where the first three places in each event go to the state meet, Wa-Hi ' s 14 contestants came out with 47 points and a tie with John Rogers for first place. Eight Blue Devils placed in their events and got the trip to Pullman and the state meet. Wa-Hi got 5 first places as Reg Barr and Dick Turner set new district records. About 1,000 fans saw the Blue Devil tracksters win the biggest home track meet of the year when they scored 571 2 points to take the Wa-Hi Relays, Pendleton was second with 36, In dual meets Wa-Hi took a 76 to 46 victory over Pendleton, and a win over Mac-HL In other meets Wa-Hi won the AAac-Hi Carnival of Speed and ran away with a triangular meet at Richland between the Bombers, Wa-Hi and Yakima.
