LACEY DEAN LOBAUGH Superintendent of Schools High School Principal ith a Message For II It is always a pleasure to receive another copy of the Royal Blue. This boolc pre- serves, largely in pictures, the varied life of the year, and as the years pass it will mean more and more to those who took part in the activities of the school. The times demand a stalwart generation. You youth pictured here, if resolute, sym- pathetic, brave and just, can plot a straight course out of the circles of the present-can achieve an America great beyond our present hopes. Our country's greatest need is capable, honest, fair-minded people to control its events. It is my belief that the generation now in our schools gives more promise of meeting this need than any group I have known. I ex- pect it to do the triclc. W. A. LACEY It is natural for every student to feel that his high school is superior to most other schools in the land, and such a feeling of loyalty is one of the most precious ingredients in the thing we call school spirit. But sometimes we are too much inclined to rest on our laurels, though those laurels may have been earned long before many of us were in Wa-Hi. Our school has many wonderful traditions of accomplishment, but because it has been an outstanding school in the past is no guarantee that it will continue to be, unless each student and faculty member makes a continual effort. What we want is that Wa-Hi shall be a distinguished school-distinguished not merely for pep, but for the quality of its endeavors: the quality of its scholarship, its athletics, its R. O. T. C., its plays, its music, its activities in whatever form, its student citizenship. Whatever we do as a school, may we do it well. To this I pledge my support. DEAN LOBAUGH l. The other students voted to student-body posts were: Willard Transeth, vice presidentg Joan Martin, secretary, Eugene Cochran, treasurer for the first semester, Kenneth Knowles, treasurer for the second semsterg and Bob Weathers, yell-leader. The Cabinet, selected by the president and ratified by the Legislative Assembly, has willingly worked with the president in directing the student affairs. Appointed to the offices of the Student Cabinet were: Commissioner of Assemblies, Sarah Ellen Loneyg Commis- sioner of Halls, Dave Barclay, Commissioner of Organization, Betty Robisong Commis- sioner of Buildings and Grounds, Harold Piper, Commissioner of Inter-School Relations, Clayton Matthews, Commissioner of Finance, Blaine Burton, Commissioner of Stage, Alvin Huber. The Cabinet has supervised activities of the school at a level fully as high as that of past years. Under the guiding hand of Chief Justice Jacob Gradwohl, the Student Court cleared- up congested hall conditions at Wa-Hi this year. Appointed to the oflices of Justices were: Sol Frank of the Senior class, Elmer Levin and Patty Walters, as the Junior membersg Robert Jacky and Doris McCauley, for the Sophomores, and Eugene Struthers, Freshman. The improvement of conditions at Wa-Hi, through activity of the Student Court, has been notable this year. One of the major innovations is the Fire Department. Stanley Kelso, elected fire chief, by the Legislative Assembly, has charge of the fire drills and has appointed a staff to help him. Members of the fire staff are: Jimmie Wamble, Jim Boldman, Pearl Jackson, Bob Hooper, Irene McNamara, and Eleanor Scheece. Each girl was introduced to the customs and traditions of Wa-Hi by a senior girl. Halloween provided the setting for a very successful masquerade party. Prizes were given for the best costumes, a very dignified paper dress, and an impressive hill-billy costume. The monthly assemblies provided both entertainment and education. Outstanding talks were given by women prominent in the community. A one-act play entitled Proposing to Jane and an amateur hour was very entertaining. A Christmas assembly was given, the admission for which was clothing, food, or toys which were distributed to the needy. With the help of Mrs. Sauers and her art class, Margie Dacres and her assistants succeeded in converting an old room into a lounge room for the girls. Modern furniture and murals add to the effectiveness. The most important activity of the year was the Tri-State Conference which was held here in April. The theme of the Conference was The Fulfillment of a Dream. Approxi- mately 200 girls attended from a radius of 150 to 200 miles. The committee for the con- ference was headed by Lois Hamm, Barbara White, and Shirley Jo Mays. Cooperating with other club groups, this committee succeeded in conducting programs and meetings in such a fashion that it was generally enjoyed. The Federation has as its ideals and goal the betterment of school spirit and better relationship among the girls. The Girls, Cabinet, headed by Helen Sporleder the first semester, and Helen Marshall the second semester, has clone much to promote this. The cooperation of every girl in school has helped to make this year another success in Feder- ation history. W AYNE BERRY Since the establishment of the Federation last year, a great many things have been accomplished. In the fall and spring a party is given for the incoming freshman boys. This gives them an opportunity to get accustomed to the curricula of high school life. The assemblies, held twice a month, feature spealcers of varied fields, each a separate source of inspiration to the boys. Clubs also provide entertainment. A Christmas assembly was given through the cooperation of both Boys' and Girls' Federations to collect supplies for the needy. Another interesting item is the sending of cards to the boys who are absent for any length of time. The boys assist in intramural sports and activities. Fifteen delegates from Wa-Hi attended the Older Boys' Con- ference in Spokane. On their return they reported on the highlights of the Conference in boys' assembly. The Federation includes many committees. The entertainment com- mittee has charge of the assemblies. The committee to greet new boys shows them their classes and introduces them to other boys. There is also a visiting committee to greet visitors to the school and show them the places of interest. The Boys' Federation was organized for the purpose of getting the boys better acquainted with each other, and assisting them in every way possible. This year has been a great success as well as a great aid to the boys. The cooperation of all the boys in school with the Federation ofli- cers and adviser has helped to make it a success. P Arn WALTERS The Juniors of Wa-Hi under Miss Falk's supervision have accomplished much this year, and show promise of becoming one of the most active senior classes Wa-Hi has ever known. The typical students which were chosen in a school-wide election from the Junior Class were Betty Rauh, Alice Garrett, and Dick Eggers. Many Juniors took part in the various phases of the annual Wa-Hilarities program, and the Junior Class's own contribution to it was a clever Mexican scene used as a finale for the show. The theme of Wa-Hilarities being the World's Fairs, the Mexican scene was used to depict the San Francisco World's Fair. Yvonne Neumann, dressed as a Mexican Hower girl sang Cavelitos. joan Martin played Estrelita on her violin, and Patty Copeland and Mary Margaret Mitchell exe- cuted a colorful Spanish dance. As a fitting close, the actors sang San Francisco. The Juniors have contributed regularly to the sports activities of the school for many seasons. Juniors particularly outstanding on the school teams this year were Don Keyes on the basketball team, and Henry Oswald, football letterman. 1'1llllll'l'lll1IllS 109 1 u11m'rlun. fflmmlwrs, Rr1l1verg. The Sophomore class has also been fortunate in having many students who have made the honor roll and who have been prominent in school activities. For the first time in many years the class has contributed several athletes to the varsity teams. Jack Melton, David Cox, Bud Miller, Jack Kenny, Warren Bischoif, Dick Clark, Paul Garland, Daryl Gilliam, and Dick Eggers have received this honor. The class has also contributed a number of successful players to the interscholastic girl's team. Dorothy Chriscoe and Lois Mace will be in the group of the first girls to earn letters in Wa-Hi this year. Many of the students in the class have participated in speech and dramatics. Two members of the class won places in the Golden Jubilee contest. Dorothy Chriscoe who spoke on The Pioneers of Washingtonl' had the honor of winning iirst place and also placed in the state meet. Harold Pratt not only placed 2nd in the Oratorical Contest but also had one of the important leads in the All-School Play. The class contributed a bowery scene to Wa-Hilarity which consisted of 2 skaters, a dancer, and 12 singers. In the absence of Frank Boewer, sophomore president, Virginia Pratt, vice president, took the responsibility of chairman for Wa-Hilarities. Many of the students in the class have proved capable leaders of school clubs. Reginald Thompson and Helen Webb, both former presidents of the class, were chosen to be the typical students of the Sophomore class. The class has had the capable guidance of Miss Draper throughout the year. ORU Y A I Hmnl-lwmllls ' f 5f3 5nInuIvl. I,muI4'n. I511-u. ffuxuxll. Kvnnv. INI1vu4'II. INIuIIunm'x. CHARLES GALLO This year, Wa-Hi welcomed one of the largest freshman classes that has ever attempt- ed to pry into its educational secrets. Combined with the two hundred and fifty new stu- dents that entered the first semester, the second semester's seventy-five froshers made a total of three hundred and twenty-five. The uwearers o' the green occupy ten homerooms. Miss Ivy Peterson, the class adviser, cooperating with Tom Copeland, second semester president, and his assistants, vice-president Maxine Hartley, and secretary-treasurer Charles Gallo, contributed a beautiful Hawaiian scene to the Wa-Hilarities. Also, during the first semester, president Paul Garland, and his cooperatives, vice-president Jack Melton, and secretary-treasurer Jack Freeman, sponsored a series of freshman parties after school in the cafeteria. As usual, the responsibility of gathering the wood for a pep-rally bonfire fell upon the unlucky greenhorns. This duty was performed without any prompting from the disap- pointed sophomore class. Eugene McMann was elected by his class as one of the ten typical students of Wa-Hi. Jack Melton made the varsity football team. The freshman basketball team was also good this year. All freshmen take gym, and while the girls are learning the art of dancing, volleyball, basketball, tennis, tumbling, and speedball, the boys are occupied with softball, basketball, horseshoes, and badminton. Some of the more sport-loving ones take part in spring football, fencing, boxing, and wrestling. The freshmen have assemblies separate from the upper classmen, because of the in- crease in the enrollment of Wa-Hi, and the insufficient number of seats in the auditorium. Freshman boys cannot enter the R.O.T.C. military corps because of a school regu- lation. Many of the musical-minded have entered the band, which is permissible, provided they take gym during their freshman year. Although they have a few short-comings, the present freshman class should make a fine class of sophomores-and eventually, seniors. Hmwmmm Gm Han. Chu-rl-rr, 131-1Vlvrm-. Burl--r. Sum' lu-llc. Hull. This year over half the students in Wa-Hi have purchased annuals. The present staff, determined to fulfill the demand for publication before the end of the school year, has been forced to put diminished emphasis on late spring activities. To counteract this loss, records of this years achievements will appear fully reported in the 1940 Royal Blue. Under the leadership of Sarah Ellen Loney, Editor-in-chief, and Clayton Matthews, Associate Editor, in charge of photography, a large and active staff has developed. An interesting feature is the addition of the Journal office for members of the staff. Quite different is the new head schedule which gives a modern appearance to the paper. The advertising staff has held up unusually well, and the journal will finish the year with a favorable balance. The grade requirement is raising the standard of writing, and it is hoped that it will raise the N.S.P.A. rating from a first-class paperl' to their goal of an All American paper . There are many chances to win special awards and advancement for the boy who fol- lows the regulations of the corps. Jack Darch was chosen as the best first-year student, and two first lieutenants, three sergeants, and one private received awards for straight As, in theoretical work. Every week a general inspection is held, when one person from each company, and one person from the band is chosen according to the neatness of their uniforms. Once a month theater tickets are given to the five best-dressed cadets that have won the most times during the month. Providing much of the musical back-ground for Wa-Hilarities, the orchestra played the introductory overture and incidental music through-out. He Had 'Seven Chances' Seven Chances, by Roi Cooper Megnee was chosen for the annual Senior class play this year. Three times each year, students ranking scholastically in the upper five percent are elected to membership. In addition to scholarship, the members are chosen on the basis of leadership, character, and service. Under the returning leadership of Miss Faye Hamm, the group held their first ini- tiation this year in January. After the ceremony, which was held at Aurel Maxey's house, the members went to see the show, You Canit Take It With Youf' On a radio program in March, the initiation service was again presented. The Blue Devils met with three defeats during the seasong one to the conference champion, Stadium High of Tacoma, and the second to the strong Seagull crew from Everett. The Imps lost a hard-fought game to the Lewiston Bengals by a one-point margin. The Blue Devils achieved a high third-place berth in the Cross State League. PIGSKIN WI-IO'S WHO 68-Co-Captain Eugene Cochran, who was unanimously named All-Cross State guard, played an outstanding brand of ball for three years. 60-Co-captain Merton Holloway held down the blocking half-back job for two years where he showed his power and fast thinking. 55-Bob Hirsh led the team with quick and brilliant head work in the quarterback position. 57-Kenneth Fichtner, the boy with the snake hips enabled the Imps to pick up many yards in their stride for scores. 66-Dale Mathes filled the fullback position because of his power and drive. Dale will be back next season. 76-Frank OlDell, the only sophomore to crack the starting line-up, displayed a good brand of ball in the right-guard position. 64--Bernard Argo carried the load of a very dependable center throughout the season. 74-Vard Pierce, who also was elected to the All-Cross State Team, showed a brilliant performance during the season at the tackle post. 75-Henry Oswald, who held down the other tackle position, showed consistent power and drive. Plank will be back next season. 73-Don Brumbach was voted an end berth on the second All-Cross State Team this year. 63-Harris Taylor, who made the starting line-up played a Hne brand of ball for his first year of Varsity Ball. Playing heavy schedules, they defeated many of the outlying schools. WHO'S WHO AMONG HOOPSTERS 22-Wayne Berry, a three-year veteran and a member of the State Champion team in 1937, played more quartets than any other player in the last two years. The Red-Headed Ace also was high scorer with 136 points for twelve games in the Cross-State League. Even though Walla Walla took eleventh place in the State Tournament, Wayne was voted honorable mention on the All-State team. 26-Jack Kenny, a sophomore who made the first five on the varsity this year, showed wonderful ability under the backboards, getting the ball and scoring at the center position. 30-Don Keyes, a veteran also from the championship team of 1937 returned this year after playnig inde- pendent ball to be starter in the left guard berth. Rhay, Michalis, and Taylor are seniors and will carry the burden of sprint and hurdle events. Vard Pierce, letter winner of last year, will be back to carry the burden in the weight events. Wa-Hi will be weak in the jumps and pole vault as no lettermen are in sight for these events yet but several promising sophomores are out working hard. Un the Diamond Veterans of last year's team and new boys greeted the baseball season. This is the first time that baseball has been included in the Cross-State league. In addition to these games, the team is competing with the W. S. C. and Whitman Frosh teams and neighboring schools. Five letter men are returning to the diamond this season. They are: Wayne Berry, Dick Eggers, Paul Garland, Dick Clarke, and Bob Weathers. These with the assistance of several promising new players, should boost Wa-Hi,s team high on the Cross-State League. Mr. Welch who is coaching baseball predicts that baseball will develop into a major sport at Wa-Hi. Learningthe Hopes The Wa-Hi boxing and wrestling team has had the best year of its existence. The Wa-Hi maulers and grapplers won the state championship at Washington State College in both boxing and wrestling. The boxing team was a well balanced affair and proved itself a strong aggregation. The team lost but one card all year and that was to our old rivals, the Mac-Hi Pioneers. However, 'on the return engagement the Blue Devils scored three knockouts and cleaned the slate by holding the Pioneers without a decisive bout. Jack Aylward won the 135 pound state championship for the second successive year. Dave Gibbs, 115 pounder, also won his state crown as did Harold Howen, the heavy weight. The wrestlers were handicapped by lack of inter-school competition, but the boys certainly tore their opponents apart when they did meet. Three boys, Henry Oswald in the 185 pound class, Chester Hillyer at 155, and Eldon Engle at 135, won state crowns at Pullman. With a heavy nucleus of fine material coming up Wa-Hi should have another fine year. S YALI f Haskvlhall allrunm Ilanvilmg Vullvy hull I'imz-Pong Spvvflllall -ROYAL BLUE Girls Sports Take the Spotlight Perhaps the recent establishment of a point system by which girls can earn letters through participation in individual tournaments, homeroom tournaments, exhibitions, and outside sports such as skiing, swimming, bicycling, hiking, skating, and horseback riding has been responsible for increased popularity and enthusiasm shown for girls' sports this year. One thousand points must be earned with no more than six hundred points a year earned in the combined fields to receive a letter in girls' sports. Girls who have reached that goal and have the honor of being the first to receive letters in girls' sports at Wa-Hi are Eileen Coyle, Roberta Bristol, Lois Mace, Mathilda Reuble, Isabel McLachlen, and Glenna Driskell. Other girls who will be among the first to earn letters, as they have eight hundred points or more, are Jane Harold, Alice Garrett, Helen Lambert, and Dorothy Chriscoe. Homeroom, double, and individual tournaments have played the largest part in sports this year. The volleyball tournament held last fall had a good turnout with twenty-three homerooms participating. Honors in volleyball went to homerooms 202, 103, and 317. The ping-pong singles tournament and the badminton double tournament were huge successes. A new ladder tournament was featured this year in ping-pong. Alice Garrett placed first, Lois Gray, last year's winner, second, and Dorothy Chriscoe third in this tournament. The team, composed of Miss Porter and Lois Gray, placed first in badminton with Alice Garrett and Eileen Coyle close behind in second place. Homerooms 213, 101-109, and 319 won the honors in the basketball tournament with some very close games played. A badminton singles tournament and archery tournament will be played this spring. The tumblers have done some outstanding work and have been in demand for frequent appearances. The girls' gym classes have been playing volleyball, speed ball, tennis, badminton and basketball. They have also had archery, tumbling and ballroom dancing. Ballroom danc- ing, much in demand, and speedball, are new in Wa-Hi this year. Archery ,has been re- vived because of the interest shown. The Girls' Honorary Sports Club has done much to make the girls sports-minded. They have sponsored tournaments and an assembly which reviewed the history of basket- ball. In addition to this the girls sponsored a play-day on April 29, for girls from schools near Walla Walla. Girls' sports are playing a more active and important part in school activities each year.
