The Cabinet, Legislative Assembly, and Student Court aided the officers in their efficient operation of school affairs. The Cabinet was chosen by the president and assisted her in the carrying out of her duties- As Vice-President, Bob Clodius head¬ ed the Legislative Assembly, which is composed of two representatives from each homeroom. Under the strong hand of Chief Justice Dorsey Googins the Student Court has helped to clear up congested conditions at Wa-Hi Through his efforts a lower or Traffic Court was established, with Sterling LaRue as its head. Under this efficient staff of capable officers and assistants, student government has maintained the same high level for which our high school is r enowned. Page Twelve ROW 1—Clayton Matthews. Taking their idea from the boys ' clubs in other parts of the state, the adviser and officers drafted a constitution and started the Federation. Saining impetus as time went on r the club is now firmly established. Trying to bring the boys in closer contact with the school so they will receive as many advantages as the school has to offer is one of the main objectives of the Fed¬ eration. Another major purpose is aiding boys whose financial circumstances do not allow them to attend school regularly. A committee secures work and furnishes clothing for these boys. The Southeastern Conference, which was an event of the early fall, was held in Kennewick, and was attended by a large delegation from Wa-Hi. December found the Federation busy honoring the girls and their mothers at a series of delightful teas which featured an interesting art exhibit. The big conference of the year Is the Tri-State Girls ' League Conference held in April Pendleton the entertaining group, carried out a clever program called A Kound-Up of Ideals, which was enjoyed by Wa-HI ' s ten delegates. Noon frolics, for which there is no a dmission charge, are held twice a week in the gym. The phonograph is used to supply the music. There is usually a good turn-out of students. Evening frolics are held once a month. They are informal, and Dare Cham¬ berlain ' s Rhythm Kings usually supply the swing. Alii son, Professor of Military Science and Tactics, and his efficient assistant, Sgl Harold L Mizony, the year ' s history of the corps has been one of evolution rather than revolution Lt. Col, Amel Boldman and the other Cadet officers have shown zeal and efficiency toward winning the 4 ’honor-rating for Wa-Hi this year, as so often in the past The non-commissioned officers and privates have atl done their part as well. The Military Department is now housed In the Industrial Arts Building, the new military offices, store-room, armory, and small-bore range being models of neatness and efficiency It is hoped to have steel arm-racks in the armory before next year, which will complete the installation. All students receive the same amount of training before the Federal Inspection by Lt. CoL Stillwell on May 6., as students no longer are allowed to enter the R.OXC, at mid-year. A military tournament will be held at the Stadium on the night of May 23, with the Wa-Hi R.O.T.C. and the National Guard taking part. The highest score was made by Camille Hunt, 98 out of 100 possible points. Captain Allison and Mrs. Allison are advisers and instructors of the dub. Jc 1 ‘ There are 18 enrolled in the Fencing Squad, only one, Sherwood Palmer, being a veteran of last year. In spite of the inexperience of the squad, good progress has been made. On a recent trip to the University of Idaho, the Wa-Hi squad was de¬ feated 6 to 3 in a very good match. It is hoped to have a meet with Whitman be¬ fore the season closes, and next season if is hoped to have meets with other schools and colleges in the Northwest. Captain Allison is fencing instructor. Diminutive Johnny Gorman made a sensational 68-yard run In the third quarter, but it was called back because of a penalty. WA-HI Q-PASCO 19 Pasco High School boasted one of the best teams that they have ever had and turned down the Blue Devils an one of the toughest battles of the year. WA-HI 13-MAC-HI 6 The Indigo Imps returned to the winning column by downing the Milton-Freewater school with a dazzling 13-6 win. John Gorman had a sensational run called back when his second half kickoff return of 88 yards to a touchdown was called back to midfield for clipping. WA-HI 6 -DAYTON 6 Playing in a drizzling rain that halted the Imps aerial attack the Dayton Bulldogs held the Boys in Blue to a tie. WA-HI 6-LEWISTON 0 The highly touted Lewiston Bengafs came to town Armistice Day with high hopes but the Blue Devils were not to be beat and Lewiston went home on the short end of a 6 to 0 score. WA-HI 12-YAKIMA 21 Thanksgiving Day brought an end to the football season with the Yakima Pirates outpointing the Blue Devils to break Into the winning column of the Cross State League. Although the game was lost the highlight of the contest was the brilliant kicking of Bob Hirsch. His average of 47 yards is as good if not better than one would see in a college contest. Adams, Berry, Coach Jeffs The 1938 Blue Devil basketeers started out this year with their hearts set on re¬ peating last year ' s record by winning the State Championship, Throughout the entire pre-tournament season prospects for this were very rosy. The squad suffered only three defeats all of these away from the home floor, and went Into the tournament in a confident manner. They coasted through the sub-district and district tourneys, but when the boys got to Seattle old man Jinx set them back on their heels with three straight defeats. Wa-Hi entered the Cross-State League play for basketball for the first time this year and finished just one-half game behind the league-leading Everett Seagulls. Although the greater part of his track squad was lost this year via the route of graduation, Coach Paul MacGown has succeeded in whipping together a team that is performing very creditably Several finds have turned up unexpectedly to bolster the squad The group was faced by a heavy schedule this year and after each meet a very decided improvement was displayed. Those participating In the varsity events were as follows: Dashes—Michaelis, Erdman, Bob Rhay. Javelin—Weaver, Rogers High Jump—Taylor, Kenny Hurdles—Michaells, Rhay, Cox, Flchtner. With very little experienced material to work with. Coach Jeffs has rounded out a squad of boys that are fast beginning to look like champions. At the date of writing this the team has won their first three games by impressive scores and seem to be headed for a most successful season Players and their positions are: Catchers—Clark, Whitehead Pitchers—Coyle, Hirsch, tanning, Garland, Keyes First—Brumbach, Hart Second—Eggers, Yeend Shortstop—Berry Third—Hirsch, Weathers R. For the first time at Wa-Hi boxing and wrestling have become two major sports. Both were started seriously last year, but not until 1937-38 did they really blossom out. Several fast, interesting smokers were held in the gym, with schools from South¬ eastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon participating, A team from Wa-Hi represented the school in an Eastern Washington tournament at the State College in Pullman, where Jack Aylward was declared the state champion in the 135-pound box¬ ing division, and Don Brower won the state title in the 165-pound wrestling division. A two-day elimination smoker was held and seventy-four contestants from sur¬ rounding schools participated. In this so-called District Championship Smoker, Wa-HI won the 135, 125, and was runner-up in the 100 and I 10-pound divisions The letter winners for this years’ team are Jack Aylward, Derrey Schaub, Neil Schaub, Claude Chambers, Bob McDougal, Clarence Swanson, Alvin Harding, Harold Gradwohl, Bob Jacky and Don Brower, With onfy one or two boys being lost from next year’s squad, Wa-Hi should have a very fine boxing team for next year. Page Thirty-Five New activities added to girls ' sports this year included badminton, deck tennis, tap dancing, darts, ring toss, and elements of lawn tennis. As the ROYAL BLUE goes to press it seems likely that the homeroom tournament, won last year by room 3!, will be captured this year by room- 21, as they are far ahead in points. Room 21 won the girls ' volley ball tournament, won second place in mixed volley ball, and first place in basketball. Homeroom 22, a senior room, won the mixed volley ball tourna¬ ment, in which 21 teams competed In individual tournaments, Betty Connery and Doris Hubbard won first place In shuffleboard. Sienna Dnskell and Peggy Dickerson were runners-up. The ping pong tournament was a huge success, having 53 entrants and some excellent playing Lois Gray was the winner and Jane Harold was runner-up. Mildred Hector and Rita Lyons reached the semi-finals The winner of the badminton tournament has not yet been determined. It is being played in doubles, with both boys and girls entered. A demonstration of physical education class activities was given on January 18, to show parents and the public what goes on in Gym Class, The girls 1 tumbling act was outstanding, and in demand for repeat performances. Another achievement was the establishment of a girls ' point system, in which points toward earning a letter may be earned In gym sports and outside sports such as hiking, bicycling; swimming, and skiing.
