Our day opens with the flag raising ceremony. During our school year, we work at our studies, we play in our sports, and we belong to our clubs. Each of these help to mold us into good citizens fully developing us both scholastically and so- cially. We hope this year's Echoes will present to you a picture of our school as it really isl-a living institution that educates the youth of our com- munity. We Work Administration Faculty Classes ,,, . .znuuu-uuuzuw-aw.1-wa.,--. ,, v, Administration Changes During Year Mrs. Naomi Keeling is the friendly person one sees when entering our superintendent's office. She is the secretary for the school and to the superintendent, treasurer of the extra-curricular activities fund, and general assistant to anyone who needs help. During his administration as Superintendent of the Walkerton-Lincoln Township Schools, C. Emmet Eiler had become well known throughout our community. Listed among his accomplish- ments are the admission of our high school to the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and the construction of a new elementary building, which was finished in February of this year. As a result of this good work, Mr. Eiler was appointed Superintendent of St. 'Joseph County Schools. Walkerton is sorry to lose so able an adminis- trator of our school system. These two smiling gentlemen are Mr. O. E. Eib and Mr. Virgil Gwin. Mr. Eib is the principal of our high school and Mr. Gwin is the principal of the elementaryischool and acting superinten- dent of schools. Mr. Eib was principal of the grade school two years before taking the responsibility of the principalship of the high school this year. 1 H! These next five pages are concerned with the faculty and their departments. The faculty of Walkerton High School are all well trained in their respective fields and have the ability to deal successfully with the students and their problems. Their job is to impress in the minds of the WILMA DUTCHER B.S. , Huntington Collegeg A.M., Ball State Teachers Collegeg Chorus, Latin, Librarian DONALD RAY WEIL B.S., M.S., Indiana State Teachers Collegeg Music students a desire for knowledge and the ability to acquire and maintain that knowl- edge. A well-balanced teaching schedule that provides for proper education in worthy subjects has been devised. The faculty and administration are to be commended for their excellent work. The ability to play a musical instrument and to speak a foreign language fluently are taught by the music and langauge depart- ments. These subjects add culture to our school. To aid the student in learning the vocabulary of a foreign language, games are sometimes played, JEANETTE GUTTMAN HORACE ISAACS SYLVIA MELTINOS A.B., Indiana University A.B., Earlham College A.B., Hanover College Social Studies English English English The departments represented on this page and the next are concerned with preparing the stu- dent to take his place in society. The social studies and English departments, form the char- acter of the student, giving him English with which to express himself and government so he will know how his country is run. The com- mercial, home economics, and industrial arts departments prepare the student so that he may take his place in the world as a wage earner and home maker. These departments are vitally important to the development of the student: TI-IELMA I-IELTON CHESTER R. KUBIT FRANCES LINDLEY B.S., Indiana State Teachers B.S., Ball State Teachers B.S., Indiana University M.S., College M.S., Indiana State College University of Illinois Teachers College Commerce, Industrial Arts Home Economics Commerce and Mathematics The Commercial department offers courses in short- hand, typing, bookkeeping, and general business, social studies offers government, economics, history, home economic offers foods, nutrition, home nurs- ing, interior decorating, home management, selec- tion of clothing and textiles, clothing construction, consumer education, child care and development, marriage and family relationships, industrial arts offers shop, transportation, and mechanical drawing. 7 - X NW P . .. ..Y.....,, .. , ,,., ,... ..,..........,.............................. ..., ,,. .- A vm, ,,,wM-hA C. V. BOZARTH FRANCELIA BEWLEY WILLIAM F. BLAISDELL B.S., Purdue University A.B., Ball State Teachers Col- B.S., Purdue University Biology and Science lege Vocational Agriculture and Mathematics and Science Science N .ww The science and mathematics departments have the task of developing in the student the reasoning power and ability to under- stand and grasp the hidden meaning of things. In this growing atomic age, science and mathematics have become all impor- tant factors in building a bigger and better world. The departments represented on this page and the next have the responsibility of educating the student mentally, physically, and psychologically. 8 BARBARA HOWARD B. S. , Valparaiso University Physical Education, Social Coach Studies JAMES WARREN B.S. , Anderson College Mathematics, Junior High DORWIN DICK Ball State Teachers College English, Physical Education, Assistant Coach The physical education department develops the sportsmanship and physical well being of the student. In this rushing world today, proper exercise and physical health are as important as the ability to get along with others. In the sports and activities carried on in gym classes, sportsmanship and team- work practices are taught and carried into real life. These departments as well as all the departments are interested first and foremost in the development of the student. JOSEPH KREITZMAN B.A., Hanover College Social Studies, Commerce, Coach 'Q ' . Workers Behind the Scenes . You say our school looks nice and well kept. Well, I can tell you we owe it all to the janitors, Dave Kerr and Arthur Kassabaum. They take care of our heating system in the winter and make sure the windows will open in the summer. Sweeping the gym is only one of the many jobs they perform in keeping our school a neat, clean, place in which to learn. ' 10 Mrs. Edna Smith, Mrs. Edna Esseltine, and Mrs. Ruth Ullery are the women who from day to day prepare the delicious meals in our cafeteria. It is their job to see that the meals are planned properly and the food is appetizing and good. There is a lot more to preparing a meal than putting a few beans in a pot, as the fellows would say. You have the part of cleaning up the grimy pots and pans. But don't they look like they are enjoying it? The four bus drivers--Richard Verkler, Art Schmeltz, Walt Baker, and Grant Bellinger--have a great responsibility in getting the pupils to school and back home again. They have to put up with all the noise and shenanigans, driving in all sorts of weather-- rain, snow, and the blinding sun. They also help out the school by driving the players and rooters to the basketball games. Introducing Our Students Mr. and Miss W. H. S. Bob Cripe and Carroll Patrick were chosen as Mr. and Miss W.H.S. from representatives from each class for their leadership, scholarship, participa- tion, and character. The student body of a school IS the school. Walk- erton High School attempts to offer those subjects and activities that will create in the student a desire for education. The student of today is the citizen and leader of tomorrow. 11 'li 'i' bl ld' Class -of -1960 CLASS MOTTO: We Lift Our Anchor Today, for Tomorrow We Sail CLASS FLOWER: White Carnation with Blue Tips CLASS COLOR: Light Blue and White DENNIS WAYNE ST OMBAUGH Sci enc e Math Contest 2- Bo ' State Alter- YS nateg Class Offi, cer 43 Librarian 3. Something New Walkerton experienced a new dimension in sports this year with the addition of a Junior High Football team, coached by Joe Kreitzman with the assistance of Jerry Rice. The Lions Club generously supplied the team with uniforms. Tommy Klinedinst served the team as manager. The boys on the team worked long and hard, but their efforts were rewarded as they split the season by winning three and losing three. This inexperienced team played against schools who have had football teams for years, but they made a very good showing in all of their games. SCOREBOARD Opponent Rolling Prairie . . Lack of experience seemed to be the basic cause of their 6 difficulty, as ten of the sixteen boys were freshmen and 5 sophomores. 4 4. . . Mr. Warren and Mr. Dick did very fine jobs in the coaching 5 department, while John Nylander proved to be a very able 10 manager. 15 The Indians lost their first seven games but showed continual improvement. The Walkerton High School Varsity man- aged to establish a better-than-average re- cord for the basketball season 1959-1960 by winning eleven games against nine losses. Early in the season they gave the impres- sion that Walkerton might really have themselves an exceptional team this year as they boasted a record of nine wins in eleven starts. However, as the season progressed, they seemed to relax more and this relaxed manner of playing proved to be their down- fall. Walkerton was eliminated from county tourney competition in the first game against Penn Township. The Kingsmen de- feated the Indians in a 46-42 thriller which was well fought to the end. For the second consecutive year, Walkerton participated in the Knox Sectional. All odds were against them, as they drew North Judson, the team favored to capture the title. The Indians fought a hard battle all the way, but lost by a 48-45 score. Although the end results were not quite what was expected, the team continued to show the spirit and drive which typifies Walkerton High School. Our Team KNEELING: Coach Kreitzman, J. The Walkerton Chapter of F.F.A. is one of over 8,000 chapters in the United States. Five hundred thousand high school boys enrolled in Vocational Agriculture are members of these chapters. FFA activities include regular Vo-Ag class work in which crops and livestock production, soils, farm management, and shopwork are studied. Judging teams represented the chapter at the state level in three contests this year. The vegetable judging team won an all- expense paid trip to Washington, D. C. in December, where they participated in the National Contest. Three fund-raising drives are conducted. They are candy sales, seed sales, and the FFA slave auction. Funds from these sources are used to finance the expenses of sending a delegation to the annual FFA convention at Purdue and the Annual three-day FFA trip to a city within a three-hundred mile radius of Walkerton. Last year's trip was to St. Louis. The Chapter is proud of its efforts in community service. Repre- sentative of this area are the daily color guard 'Assembly' and 'Retreat' ceremonies, and presentation of the national and state colors at all home basketball games. This year chapter members plan to produce for market over 320,000 worth of Agricultural Products. 111 c 5 41 ' , an av' '55 46 We visit the farm , - l A..
