ATTer careTully hanging iT up, a diTTiculT Task Tor a small boy, he examined The works and made sure everyThing was all righT. Flushed and exciTed iusT aTTer Tinishing, he crawled ouT Through The back en- Trance To Tind his grandTaTher. The greaT Town clock had iusT sTruck Two when The crowd began To merge Toward The greaT bazaar. Karl seized Herr Schneiderlink by The hand. and TogeTher They enTered The building. The duke was sTanding on a raised plaTTorm wiTh The iudge. As soon as The people were quieT he began: My dear villagers, Today we are abouT To conclude our happy EasTer TesTival wiTh The ToremosT evenT. Around us are clocks Trom all parTs of Germany. One oT These clocks will be The winner and iTs owner The proud possessor oT Two Thousand marks. Now our honored mayor Joseph DunkengriTT will choose The prize clock. i The people began To mill around while The mayor examined every clock. AT lasT he came To The Two duplicaTes. Hmm, he mused. whaT's This? Two exacT replicas? And such exquisiTe carving. Call The owners! Up Till now Karl had managed To keep his grandTaTher away Trom The clocks, buT now The blow would Tall. l-lerr Schneiderlink and Herr Schnapfelheim came forward. and when The Tormer saw an exacT copy oT his clock he Turned pale. Why, you cheaTing old Tool, he cried you sTole my plans. You copied my carving and had The audaciTy aTTer so much deceiT To bring iT here. I have no words ThaT express whaT l Think of you, you scoundrel! Prove iT, said Schnaplielheim wiTh a smug look. l did no such Thing and besides. my clock was here a day before yours. By righTs l should win. . This is mosT exTraordinary, puT in The mayor, buT genTlemen, leT's have no quarreling. UndoubTedly These are The TinesT clocks in The conTesT. We can only TesT The works To see which is The besT. So saying he moved The hands on GrandTaTher's clock To Twelve and immediaTely The big cuckoo appeared and crowed Twelve Times. Then The panels slid open and The liTTle plaTTorm emerged wiTh ST. Nick and his reindeer. EveryThing worked per- TecTly and The Tone of The music box was superb. Then The mayor TesTed The oTher cuckoos on The quarTer. halT, and Three quarTer sTrokes. These worked perTecTly Too. The crowd held iTs breafh as The mayor moved The hands on SchnapTelheim's clock. Everyone wanTed GrandTaTher To win because his rival was so mean Tempered and rude. The hands poinTed To Twelve. NoThing happened. They waiTed Tive minuTes. Ten: sTill noThing. SchnapTelheim's Tace was purple wiTh rage. He Tlung The clock To The ground and kicked iT aparT while The onlookers gazed aT him. horriTied. When There was noThing buT a mangled heap oT works leTT, he rushed ouT of The building shouTing someThing ThaT wouldn'T be TiT To repeaT. lO2

The nexf morning while fefching some wafer from fhe well, Karl noficed fhe open shed window and a few scrafches on fhe painfed ledge. However, fhinking fhis fo be of Iiffle consequence. he merely menfioned if fo his grandfafher. remarking fhaf fhe shed needed a new coal of painf soon. Nofhing more was said abouf if. The day of fhe clock confesf was a fhrilling one for Karl. He and Grandfafher were up af four o'clock fo prepare for fhe journey fo Dusseldorf. Affer helping fo pack fhe precious clock and giving if one Iasf careful Iookover, Karl sfarfed ouf fo prepare a place in 'rhe exhibifion for if. As he skipped merrily 'rhrough 'rhe woods. he seemed fo hear 'rhe very birds saying. You're going fo win, you're going fo win. His hearf was filled wifh a happy song as he enfered fhe village. Everywhere people were calling ouf and hurrying fo and fro. The cify fairly shoufed wifh joy abouf fhe gay fesfival going on, especially since foday was so imporfanf. Karl made his way fo fhe huge clock bazaar. There were clocks from all over Germany: big ones, Iiffle ones, fall and shorf, carved and plain. In facf. fhere musf have been a clock of every size and descripfion excepf, of course. his grandfa'rher's. Where is Herr SchneiderIink's place? he inquired of a busy looking official. Uhm -- number fwo-forfy-eighf, righf over fhere. nexf fo Herr SchnapfeIheim's. Karl furned and gasped. There sfood an exacf replica of his grandfa'rher's clock. The clock fhaf he had spenf years of his precious fime on and all for naughf. Slowly Karl Ieff fhe bazaar. his head hanging down on his chesf. In fwo hours Grandfafher would be here and would find ouf. Whaf could he possibly do? He wandered from place fo place seeing nofhing excepf his grandfafher's sfricken face when he found ouf fhe frufh. Then bi+ by bif he began fo piece fogefher fhe mysfery. Wasn'f if fhe day affer he had hif Iiffle Schnapfelheim fhaf he'd noficed some scrafches on 'rhe window ledge of fhe shed? Thinking fhem fo be iusf marks of winfer. he had quickly forgoffen fhem. I bei old Schnapfelheim climbed in fhe window and copied fhe clock fhaf nighf, he said fo himself. I wonder if fhere is anyfhing fhaf I could do? Buf I wouIdn'f dare meddle wifh if. Then he had an idea. If he could meef Grandfafher before he enfered fhe village and fell him 'ro go for lunch, he wouldn'f find our 'fil Iafer. Hurrying fo a rock oufside fhe gafes, he saf down fo waif. Soon he saw him coming. leading a donkey carf bearing fhe precious clock. As soon as Herr Schneiderlink was wifhin calling disfance. Karl shoufed, Good day. Grandfafher. you're jusf in fime for fhe clock makers' banquef af fhe 'rown hall. I've already eafen, so l'll fake fhe clock and fix if for you. You can frusf me wifh if, because if means as much fo me as if does fo you, and l'll be ever so careful, you know I will. Don'f worry. I know we'Il win. All righf, Karl, l'll leave everyfhing fo you.
