They were all dressed in liTTle Wallis-blue suiTs, embroidered wiTh black swasTikas, which convinced us ThaT Himmie was sTill pro-Windsor wiTh a dash of Nazi- ism. We finally goT down To serious business and were Thrilled by The breaTh-Taking Trapeze acT of Richard and SchmelTzer. ShouTs of laughTer broughT our aTTenTion To Susie who, as usual. was cuTTing up-only This Time she was in a clown suiT. WiTh The help of Sis, who came zooming in on her miniaTure hook and ladder, and wiTh oThers, she enacfed The usual comedy of The burning house To The Tune oT screaming sirens. The nexT acT on The program was enTiTled GreaTer Love HaTh No Woman Than This and Turned ouT To be llla, who sT.ood in fronT oT a TargeT aT which her husband Threw knives from a disTance of 26 TeeT. Then ouT galloped Van Vleck and Elms all decked ouT in pink TighTs as bareback riders on Dear Sir and Rocky MounTain. The climax of The afTernoon's performance, however, was reached when Frankie proceeded To exhibiT her Tamed Tigers. Armed only wiTh a rolling pin, she puT Them Through Their Tricks, which included a P formaTion and wiTh a liTTle more diTficulTy evenTually a W. Finding The circus TenT a liTTle sTuTTy, we again wenT ouT inTo The open and This Time soughT The amusemenT secTion. There we could easily pick ouT Annie McConnell, who had adopTed sTilTs on which To walk. She suggesTed ThaT we have our picTures Taken, 6 for IOc by Mackie, who had recenTly gone inTo parTnership wiTh Gallo and had seT up a small booTh noT far disTanT. We hadn'T gone far when The gay lighTs. blaring music, and dashing horses of a merry-go- round compelled us To buy TickeTs. While waiTing our Turn. we noTiced as The horses and music wenT 'round and round'. a cerTain young woman, who was siTTing noT only asTride. buT also backwards on her dappled sTeed. She seemed To be enjoying herself immensely, despiTe The TacT ThaT she was The sole rider. Occasional bursTs of hysTerical giggling we discovered were The resulT of puns ThaT she was levelling aT herself. As The music slowed down and The horses slackened Their pace, we recognized Rowdy. who proudly showed us her newly acquired possession and oTTered us Tree rides. Tiring afTer The firsT hour and a half we Turned our aTTenTion To a couple of quack docTors who were indulging in a liTTle compeTiTion, in The form oT rapid sales Talk delivery, from The heighTs of Two nondescripT craTe boxes. On The Top of one. labeled Coca- Cola. we recognized Bobbie. who was lisTing The meriTs of a cerTain concocTion in The mosT vehemenT fashion, her bangs bouncing aT every emphasized syllable. Here, ladees and genTlemen, you see me holding a boTTle ThaT conTains a liquid guaranTeed To remove Treckles, ink sTains. cure hay fever and is also excellenT as a wave-seTTing loTion. While on The oTher box we saw Frenchie, valianTly aTTempTing To drown ouT her compeTiTor wiTh promises of insTanT success To all on one Trial oT her hair de-kinking machine. WiTh a few words of encouragemenT To each, we heaved a sigh and de- parTed. We walked on and sTopped To waTch in admiraTion Nancy Marshall's unfail- ing aim as she hurled baseballs aT WoolworTh's besT china.
