Here, from the earliest grades, the child learns his lessons of sportsmanship, fair play, obedience and responsi- bility. The school activities train the pupils for good citi- zenship and teaches how to take part in self government Such organizations as the grange, the church and the sun day school give to young and old an opportunity for social gath erings, religious instructions, and sharing of responsibility, all of which is a part of the work of a democratic state If these town institutions are to be continued, citizens must become more interested them I believe that all adults should go to town meeting, even though they do not vote Every one should be willing to hold office and to cooperate with other citizens People should become more enthusiastic about the schools The parents should visit the schools and citizens with no children, should give all possible aid to supporting the school and its activities In these days when the right to assemble and to worship ac cording to the dictates of con science are being snatched away zens must become more interested in these rights and try to cre ate different attitude in thc younger generation toward thc town institutions Ikilvklkiklk COMMUNICABLE DISEASES AND T B TEST In February the school w s visited by the health nurse ann Dr Laughlin, head of the Healti Department of Maine, who gave I . . . . He explained the nature of the most com on diseases, how they are contracb ted, the best way to avoid them, and how to prevent the spreading of them Later Dr Laughlin and the nurse returned, and gave the T B test to all pupils who had the consent of their parents This test shows whether the 1n dividual has or ever has had T B even in a mild form Four students reacted to the test and were taken to Fairfield for X ray The X ray shows the extent of the trouble, and from that the doctor and nurse prescribe such treatment as 1S necessary This T thing to est s fine be used 1n any school and lt is the hope of the stu dents and teachers that it will be carried on every year XXXXXX SCHOOL LUNCHES Through the efforts of our Superintendent hr Jones, school lunches have been very success ful Ur Jones secured the help of Mrs Abbie Hannan, Ars Rose Hannan and Irs Blanche Cates to prepare the meals These lunches have a great value because you donft have to bring so much food from home, and they furnlsh at least one hot dish or drink The grange was kind enough to lend the school their dishes, and people around town lave also made contributions of dishes Each pupil makes a small week contribution of either money material and thus ve are able balance our vitamin as well as our budget During the week that the lower grades were hav ing vacation we made a special contribution of ice cream Je easily consumed seven gallons At first not many of the high school pupils came to the lunch room to eat, but later no one was left behind The high school students eat first at ll 30, then the grammar and primary come in at ll 45 We all hope that these lunch es V111 continue throughout the ye rs to come XXX!!! THE G L EE CLUB Mrs Jones, the Primary Teach er, has organized a girls' glee club, consisting of girls from all three rooms, the primary, grammar, and high school Songs they have learned are not the Ja7z type One of their main accomplishments 1S their McNama rafs band, wlth costumes of red, white, and blue Je wish t thank the glee club for furnish ing the music on our semi f1nal Speaklng program We feel sure the work of the club will bring engoyment its members and broaden their ed ucation On ev ry program there XXXXXX THE LIBRARY Th1s year we have enlarged our llbrary a good deal Mrs Carrie B Knowlton of Los Angeles C lifornia in memory of her father, Lot Knowlton, and Mrs Meda Harriman, have donated numbe of good books to the school This year the town bought about f1fty new books Most of our books are classed as fiction but we have a few non fiction volumes The library is oben to the publ1C V9 WlSh mgre pegple would patronize it Plans are being made to keep the library open certain hours this summer I . . 0 ' I I ' ' : . No, this party is always hunting for the dissatisfied classes and always trying to start strikes and uprisings that hind er our government I say, 'le ware of the Nazi We must try to help the dis satisfied people and make them realize the consequences helping the Nazi spies I think that we should drive all the fifth columnists, socialists, and communists from this country let them go live in their own country and take the conse quences of dictatorships I do not think that we should let these organizations of spies live in our country under our flag while they are trying t create civil strife The government must find some means to employ both the for cigners and the restless people of our own country A more fair means oi taxation should be de vised and the strife between capital and labor should be done away with We cannot have a true democracy until everyone in The foreign and fifth colum nist elements constitute a par solve since the foreigners are numerous and widely scattered over the country and many for eigners are entirely loyal we can't drive the disloyal ones out but we can lessen this prob lem by Americanization, natural ization, and by doing away with race pregudice When foreigners come to this country discontented if they Jobs and happiness great menace because isfied class works iiith columnists they become do not find This is a the dissat with the undermining our democracy The Nazi slogan for cao+uring countries is ndi Jid id conque N France, one t me a our own country, was a good example of this People this country cooperates We are called a free and patriotic peo when wc most need unity, strikes are occurring betwe n capital and labor in many of our large industrial plants, factories and bridges are being blown up, all of which hinders our speed in preparation for our defense This is a good way for he greedy to get what they want but a poor way to act in helping their country out of an emergen y Fveryone must know by this time that everyday that England resists the enemies of democracy means one more day for us to prepare, and this has so far been our strong point in de fensc We should send England everything that we possiole can with the exception of troops un is ' . ..g, .
