A sleeping garden wrapped in a Winter white blanket was the setting on January 29, 1 977, at Walker High School ' s annual beauty walk. The cold weather outside added more to the magical mysteries of Winter. Suddenly a ray of warmth and beauty filled the room, as the 68 contestants, dressed in the colors of the rainbow, were announced. The garden soon began to look as if it were awakening into a spring day. The judges (Mr. and Mrs. John Armstrong, Mrs. Jane Mullinax, Mr. George Harland, and Mr. Charles Dean) really had a hard time selecting the top fifteen. The Stage Band provided the entertainment while the judges were deliberating. A silence fell over the gym as Jerry Lee, master of ceremonies, announced, Fourth alternate, 30, Angela Adcox; third alternate, 65, Melinda Taylor; and second alternate, 60, Kay Wallace. With only two girls left, the gym became soundless. First alternate, 36, Angle Jackson was announced and our new Sweetheart of Walker High was 20, Lynn Gardner. As the crowd applauded and cheered, Lynn was crowned by last year ' s winner. 30 Good Citizenship Boy and Girl Lee Yates Cindy Wilson The Good Citizenship Award is given to the Senior boy and girl who the faculty feels best displays true citizenship. This year ' s good citizenship boy and girl are Lee Yates and Cindy Wilson. By looking at Lee ' s activities of Beta Club Vice-president, Math Club president. It was the first year we won a championship at Walker in quite a while. We were 8-3 and with a break or two we could have been 9-1 or 10-1 . Injuries at different times to some starters such as Wade, Warren, James, and Allred, could have made a difference in our year also. Some of the bright spots this year were winning the region eight championship, playing in Bryant-Denny stadium and Legion Field, and having seven Vikings sign scholarships. It also gives the coaches and players great pleasure in knowing they don ' t have to look back at the 1976 season and say wait until next year. The 1976 year was great as far as unity and closeness among the players and coaches and one we can look back on with pride and say thanks to the Good Lord that we were part of the 1 976 Walker Viking Football team. Β§ Vikings Resist Eagle Invasion On Erwin ' s first series, the Eagles were unable to penetrate the Viking defense and a bod snap gave the Viking offense possession at the Erwin eight-yard line. Many happenings have effected our lives both socially and educationally. We have witnessed first-hand accounts of the Civil Rights Movement, the assassinations of President Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther Kin g Jr., the tragedies of Vietnam, the landing on the moon, and the shame of the Watergate scandal. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger President John F. Kennedy 1961-1963 Consumer Advocate Ralph Nader 170 President Richard M. As this country enters its third century of existence, we look to past events to build a solid foundation for the future; therefore we dedicate this section of the BLACK GOLD to the Seniors of 77. Alabama Governor George C. Wallace 171 How Has Growing Up in the 60 ' s and 70 ' s Affected Your Life? It ' s made me more aware of people ' s needs. I feel that what happened in the sixties has died. I think that we, the youth of today and leaders of tomorrow, need to again stimulate a need for reform. Growing up in the era has forced me to make decisions about myself that wouldn ' t have been necessary 20 years ago. 172 iDi WALKEK niun β’ β JMMY CARTa-jhwCAWB , :r for fr- 1 4 A Z)iV You Participate in the Presidential Election? No, I wasn ' t old enough to vote. I didn ' t register in time. Yes, although I was too young to vote I actively cannpaigned at school end in the community. No, politics confuse me. 173 What Experiences Have Helped to Formulate Your Ideas ofLife? Observing other people and looking inward at myself. When I look at myself I can tolerate others. My experiences in athletics have helped me to learn that you get out of anything what you put into it. Working has helped me to formulate my ideas of life. You meet different people with different ideas and views of life. My family, my peers, and most of all Jesus Christ for settling the example for me. The death of a close friend showed me that life was short and very valuable, and taught me that I should treasure and enjoy life. 174 Has Walker Prepared You for Life After High School? No, I don ' t think any high school can successfully do that. Preparing yourself for life after high school is a personal, individualized step. I ' m not saying that high school doesn ' t help at all, it does. But other, outside factors have been the major influence in my life. Yes, Walker has provided a variety of activities, both educationally and socially, and an opportunity to meet and deal effectively v ith people. With bubble gum, bobby socks, greased hair, and sunglasses, the students walked into their class rooms eager for education. But instead of learning, their minds were at the corner soda fountain, the weekend sock hop, or the hot rod in the parking lot. Even the teachers got into the act. Mrs. Cain brought a hand bag that was actually hers in the fifties. The best dressed teachers were Mr. Brown, who came equipped with his own straw hat and banner, Mrs. Underwood, and Mrs. Drummond who was ready to go into her cheerleading act any moment. The Pep rally was the highlight of the day with the cheerleaders leading such cheer as the itch and scratch. The second annual 50 ' s Day was a big hit this year, thanks to the help of a great student body. 218 Quarterback Club The Jasper Quarterback Club supported the Viking team In an outstanding way in 1 976. The club erected a new stadium for Viking fans which helped increase ticket sales. The entire team was honored at the first annual meeting. Coach Doug Barfield was the speaker and everyone enjoyed the evening. The club also awarded helmet decals for the outstanding players in each game. This helped keep Viking Spirit high throughout the entire season. After the season the Quarterback Club provided all Senior players, coaches and their wives an all expense paid trip to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. In all, the 1 976 football season was made a lot brighter by the Jasper Quarterback Club. 219 Pep Rallies Spirit was high this year at Walker High and one of the main reasons was our great pep rallies. The cheerleaders seemed to keep up their perfect performances each Friday with entertaining skits and new cheers. With good music from the band and twirling from the majorettes, it was hard not to get excited. Speeches from the coaches and players made sure everyone would be at the game that night. With spirit like this, it is not hard to see why the Vikings were champions this year. Not only were the Seniors and Juniors exceptionally spirited this year, but to everyone ' s surprise the Sophomores contributed greatly to the spirit of the school. The students next year have a tremendous job ahead of them if they try to top the pep rallies of 1 976. llAliCV 220 221 Homecoming The Homecoming of 1 976 will go down as one of the best Homecomings ever. Even though it was wet and cold, the day was beautiful. The first thing on the agenda was the parade. This year ' s floats included Campbell ' s Soup, devils, and stills. It would not have been complete without the band, cheerleaders, majorettes, and the many different cars. Many strange faces and outfits were seen all over the school, but no one really seemed surprised. The Student council did another fine job in hosting their annual football alimnl banquet, in which the Seniors of 1 926, 36, 46, 56, and 66 were honored. The game started with the presentation of the homecoming queen and her court, the football sponsor and maids, and alumni football players. Then the football team went on to victory to end a fabulous day at Walker High. 222 t Parade 223 Senior Float The senior float, as usual, captured first place in the 1 976 float competition. The Junior float was second and the sophomores were third. The Seniors showed their spirit and dedication to their class by working many long and hard hours on their float. The hard work was evident when the float appeared at school on Homecoming day. The Seniors of 77 will always remember their Homec oming float as one of the best ever at Walker. 224 Homecoming Pep Rally The nighf before the big game with the Cullman Bearcats, the Vikings student body was involved in many activities. The pep rally at the square was one of the best of the year. Many Jasper residents received a glimpse of what Viking Spirit really sounds like. Following the pep rally, the widow of the bearcat was escorted with the remains of her husband to the bonfire at the Softball field, where he was to be creamated. After the students were warmed by the slow starting fire, they left with their spirits high, ready for the contest the next night. 225 W-Club Initiation The 1976-77 W Club initiations were less violent than in past years, but each person paid dearly to enter the letterman ' s club. After an ennbarrassing day in school, including such things as ponty hose, shaved legs, and duck walks, the group faced more hardships. Club members prepared a line of all sorts of things for the Initiants to eat. After going through the line and eating what they wanted and didn ' t want, the group chose sides and has several interesting relay races. The loser received the honor of racing again. The most fun thing of the entire day was the mud wrestling behind the fieldhouse, in which each member could show his strength. 226 227 Club Activities Clubs are the spokes in the wheel that turns the schools activities. They are responsible for rotating the major functions of school activities as one unit combined for the common goal of keeping the school revolving. The students keep the wheel turning. The year 1 976-1 977 was one filled with many activities for oil clubs at Walker. Such events as Key Club painting the sickroom. Anchor Club ' s Powder Puff football game, SGA raising money for the Keith Nations Fund, and the National Honor Society ' s Christmas Party, are just a few examples. These are several reasons clubs at Walker turned this year into one of the finest. 228 229 Talent Show This year ' s National Honor Society talent show was a great success. How could it not be with Angle Jackson, Pattie Washington, and Vanessa Washington doing a musical skit to Delta Dawn , and people like Earl Stafford in a skit about our local radio stations? Pee Wee Parliament stole the show and captured a first place with their fast disco sound! 230 1 ' - 1 Β a The Stage Band The unsung heroes of Walker High are the members of the stage band. Even though they play at the beauty walk and at many other occasions, we do not really see them in action as much as we would like. They play for many clubs and activities as ambassadors for our school. Each year they attend a jazz festival in New Orleans. Although some don ' t realize it they are a very big part of our school. 231 A Man of A Thousand Faces No doubt about it, everyone at Walker High School knows Coach Morrison. Coach Morrison is assistant football and junior varsity basketball coach. He is also one of the most popular members of the faculty. You can never tell what he will do next, but you can be sure it won ' t be what you expect. One minute he will be yelling at a referee and the next he will be shaking his hand. One week he will be clean shaven, the next he will have a handlebar mustache. No matter what he does it always seem to be the thing that brings happiness to people ' s faces, and for that we will always respect him. 232 I don ' t know what the disease is called, but the symptoms are obvious.
