I 137 Vikings Win Season Opener Ben Hale β Junior Mark Marlowe β Junior m Joe Jenkins β Senior Under the leadership of new head coach David Campbell, the 1 975 Walker Vikings started their season with a very important victory over the Erwin Eagles. Erwin got on the scoreboard early when they connected for a 29 yard scoring strike in the second quarter but the Vikings ' wishbone attack patiently chipped away at the Eagles ' defense. Walker mounted an 80 yard drive early in the second half which was capped by a 3-yard run by Steve Warren. The extra point was added and Walker took control 7-6. The Vikings kept pouring it on and scored an insurance score late in the final period. Wade scored the second touchdown and Walker took command 14-6. Erwin got a break when the Vikings fumbled the ball on their own 24 yard line. After two plays the Eagles were in the end zone. Erwin attempted a two point conversion but the Viking defense rose to the occasion and stopped the Erwin runner cold on the one yard line to insure the Vikings of victory. The impressive victory turned out to be costly for the Vikings. During the course of the game, Mark Marlowe received a broken ankle and was out of action for the year. Campbell had high praise for Walker ' s running attack and defense. The Vikings gained 225 yards rushing to Erwin ' s 80. Kevin Wade β Junior Terry Redmill β Senior 138 Vikings Blank Fayette 20-0 Rex Williams β Senior Ricky Allred β Junior Steve Hudson β Senior Steve Warren β Junior The Walker Vikings took their second gome of the season with a devastating 20-0 victory over Fayette. The first score of the game came v hen Steve Warren plunged two yards for a Viking TD. Later quarterback Ben Hale found Bobby Davidson 1 9 yards down field to give Walker a 1 2-0 half-time lead. Both PAT attempts were no good. After a completely scoreless third quarter, Viking quarterback Ben Hale again connected with senior tight end Bobby Davidson for a four-yard touchdown pass. Walker ' s two point conversion was good, when Kevin Wade took a Hale pitch-out and pounded his way into the end zone. Wade had a punching 109 yards against the Fayette defense. Defensive standouts for the Vikings were linebacker Joe Jenkins and tackle Julius Lightsey. Mike Adklns β Senior 139 The Walker Vikings chalked up their third straight win of the young season while defeating the Druid Dragons 35-1 2. Viking linebacker Joe Jenkins got the Vikings off to a good start with an interception at midfield. Following the interception. Walker halfback Kevin Wade scored on a three-yard run only four minutes after the opening kick-off. The PAT was no good. On Walker ' s next two possessions they drove to a first and goal but a fumble in the Druid end zone stopped one threat and a determined Druid defense held tight to stop the Vikings on a four down and one-yard attempt. In the closing seconds of the first half. Walker quarterback Ben Hale scored on a quarterback sneak to give the Vikings a 1 2-0 lead at halftime. Walker scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter, one on a 1 5-yard pass from Ben Hale to split receiver, Mike Adkins, the other coming on a four-yard run by Mike Weaver. The PAT following the final touchdown was good and Walker led 25-0. Druid ' s first score came late in the third quarter and again in the fourth quarter. The final score Walker 25, Druid 1 2. Walker Takes 25-12 Victory Over Druid Danny Dailey β Junior Mike Weaver β Senior Greg Hendon β Sophomore Eugene Nixon β Senior 140 Vikings Fall in 14-13 Heartbreaker The Walker Vikings took to the field for one of the most suspenseful, yet saddening games of the year. Walker was stunned in the opening minutes of the game when Tuscaloosa bursted open on the second play of the game for a 77-yard touchdown run. The Black Bears of Tuscaloosa again scored before the half on a 86-yard drive. The Vikings began their surge from the beginning of the third quarter. After receiving the second half kick-off Walker skillfully began a seven-and-half yard scoring drive. Quarterback Ben Hale capped the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak. Mike Weaver kicked the PAT to pull Walker to within one touchdown of the visitors. With the score at 1 4-7 and 1 :36 remaining in the game Walker took over at the Black Bear 39-yard line. On the first play quarterback Ben Hale broke through the Bear ' s defense and raced for a 39- yard T.D. to bring Walker to within one point at 14-13. That ' s when disaster struck. The PAT missed by an inch and sent the Vikings to their first defeat of the season. Robin Edgil β Senior Earl Mummey β Junior Steve Parnell β Senior Bobby Gibson β Sophomore Tommy Knight β Senior Johnny Christian β Junior 141 Vikings Tame Wildcats In a head to head battle against the stubborn Wildcats of Tuscaloosa County, the Vikings ' first score of the game came OS junior quarterback Ben Hale capped a 51 -yard drive with a one yard quarterback sneak with 6:31 left in the half. The Vikings went for two but failed leaving the Vikings out front 6-0. As the second half opened, the Wildcats received the kickoff. With the aid of a roughing-the-kicker call and a successful fourth down play, the Wildcats marched to their first score of the season to make the score 7-6. In the closing minutes of the game, Ricky Allred sparked a 70-yard touchdown drive with a 45-yard scamper to give the Vikings a come from behind victory over County, 1 2-7. Hayden James β Junior Ross Fleming β Senior Charles Brock β Senior Charles Windham β Junior 142 Homecoming ' 75 Leaves Sad Memories The Walker Vikings took to the field for what was to become a most disappointing homecoming. Homecoming 1 975 was a battle of the defenses. So determined was the Viking defense, it took three turnovers by Walker ' s offensive team for Minor to score via a pair of field goals and one touchdown. Minor ' s first score came in the second quarter with a 30-yard field goal after recovering a fumble deep in Viking territory to sustain a 3-0 halftime lead. The only touchdown of the game came when a Ben Hale pass was picked off by a Minor defender which led to a 40-yard run from scrimmage. The final points came in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard Minor field goal set up by a Viking fumble deep in Walker ' s territory. Cullman struck the first blow in the opening quarter following one of many Viking turnovers. Walker came back with a Ben Hale to Steve Hudson pass. Hudson broke three tackles on his way to paydirt. John Womack kicked the PAT to tie the game at 7-7. Just before the half ended, Cullman broke a 90-yard touchdown for a 1 3-7 lead. Viking linebacker Joe Jenkins hurled over the Bearcat center to block the extra point attempt, which was ultimately the deciding point. Walker ' s Steve Hudson made a diving catch in the end zone at the beginning of the final period of play. Womack again added the extra point to give Walker a 1 4-1 3 edge. β ' β¦v. In the first quarter, leading the Vikings were Danny Dailey, who marched six yards for the Vikings first score of the game, and John Womack, who kicked the extra point to raise the score to 7-0. With time still left in the first quarter, the Vikings again scored as Mike Adkins received a fifteen yard pass from quarterback Ben Hale. The Vikings captured their second shut-out of the season. With Hueytown in possession at Walker ' s 20-yard line, they drove in for the game ' s first score to take a 7-0 lead. Midway in the final quarter, the tough Walker defense forced Hueytown to punt and Walker took over at Walker ' s 45-yard line. Walker drove to the Hueytown 15-yard line. From this point, quarterback Ben Hale ran for a touchdown. Walker tried for the two-point conversion but fell a foot short and trailed 7-6. Following the kickoff, Roland Stornes pounced on a Hueytown fumble near midfield and two plays later Ben Hale connected with Mike Adkins on a 42-yard scoring play to bring Walker to its seventh victory of the year. With the score 7-7 at halftime, Johnson came back in the third quarter with a 40-yard run to take the lead at 1 4-7. The valiant Vikings came right back on a 26-yard pass to Adklns. Womack booted the PAT to tie the score at 14-14. The final quarter of play found Hudson in the end zone for a 30- yard score and a 21-14 lead. With less than three minutes left in the game, disaster struck. Walker had the ball at their own 40 when a Johnson defender picked off a Hale pass to send the game into overtime. Walker won the toss for first possession, going for a seven point touchdown. Johnson held them and came back to send the Vikings to their their defeat with a 27-yard field goal. It was the 1 950 ' s all over again. The pep rally was the highlight of the day. Walker ' s own Fonzie gave a pep talk while the cheerleaders swooned around him. Hayeee! 216 W-Club Initiation Many of Walker ' s athletic stars were put into a different kind of spotlight during the W Club initiations. Instead of being given praise and cheers, they were given strange looks and bursts of hysterical laughter. The football field was a mass of muddy bodies when the week of embarrassment came to an end with a show for the whole school to see and enjoy. 217 Pep Rallies School Spirit is one thing Walker High School has plenty of, as demonstrated in the pep rallies. The enthusiasm is generated not only by the cheerleaders, but by the student body, along with some peppy music from the band. The coaches give speeches that both inspire the players and give the students a special urge to be at the games and support the team. It ' s all enough to make any athlete want to do his best. IMrΒ«U -:C ' X..dX ;Β S1!I Erah.. ' ?MK ?C. WAtKER BRBHD 218 219 Club Activities The basic idea behind the club activities at Walker is learning through serving and helping others. Each member of the Future Homemakers Club learned how to improve her relationship v ith her parents at the Mother-Daughter Banquet, and v ith her fellow students at the county-wide F.H.A. meeting. National Honor Society members learned the importance of concern and patience when they gave the Shrine School students a special Christmas party. The F.T.A. expressed gratitude to the teachers by honoring them with a tea. These are just a few examples of the learning and sharing activities in which the organizations at Walker have been involved. 220 ' - Β . 221 Homecoming As we reflect over the years, the thrills of homecoming ore renewed in our minds. Homecoming is more than just o one-day affair at Walker High School. Ideas for cars, floats, and money-raising campaigns begin as soon as the opponent is announced. Finally the big day arrives and all the ideas are combined to give us one of the most exciting events of the year. The parade carries the spirit of homecoming down the main street of Jasper. This year ' s parade consisted of everything from Chinese proverbs to a party with No Minors Allowed. Other interesting themes were portrayed through floats and cars. Excitement builds as we approach the highlight of the day, the ball game, with the presentation of the queen and her court, and the reunion of old friends and former classmates. All these events combine to make homecoming remain vivid in our memory. 222 Senior Class First Place Junior Class Second Place Sophomore Class Third Place Homecoming Court 223 Talent Shows . . Both the National Honor Society and the Beta Club sponsored talent shows. The talent in both shows proved to be the best Walker has seen in several years. Ranging from several good groups to dancing hustlers and baton twirlers, the variety helped to moke the talent shows a success. Although only three participants received prizes, everyone who saw the shows were winners. 224 Air Force Band . . The students at Walker received an unexpected pleasure when they were entertained by the Maxwell Air Force Base band. The music and vocalists were well received by young and old alike. ftf piwp mk A w Ujy B 1 m HL --. β’ jut. The judges truly had a difficult job since Walker has on abundance of beautiful girls. The music of the stage band provided entertainment for the audience during intermissions. Handsome young men from the junior class escorted the beauties and helped to make the 1 976 beauty walk a great success. 226 Quarterback Club This year was one of the best for the Walker High Quarterback Club. During the year the meetings were highlighted by the appearance of such men as Coach Paul Bear Bryant and Alf van Hoose. Three outstanding players of each game received awards from the club. The club was also instrumental in enlarging the Kiro Field stadium. 227 David Hagood β State Teen March of Dimes Chairman. Each is an individual with his or her own endearing personality, but sometimes we capture them in peculiar situations. Coach Karabasz listens carefully to the advice of little black boxes. Mrs. Dutton walks the halls intoning Open Sesame to each locker in turn. J Coach Morrison has no time for such nonsense β he just sits on his stick! For shame, Mrs. Underwood! 231 As times change, teachers also change. Mrs. Lollar ' s stylish hair-do is just one example. Col. Creel and Mr. Wilson are two of the most trustworthy and dependable teachers. You con always depend upon them to be on the job. Our faculty members have both direction and purpose in their lives, as Coach Faucett and Mr. Davidson illustrate so 232 Even in the face of danger, Mrs. McDanal and others hove shown immense courage and determination, almost without the slightest trace of visible fear. Probably one of the most distinguishing characteristics Is to lough and enjoy the passing moments.
