A typical school day is blossoming and once again it ' s time to unwillingly drag out of bed and clear the debris in order to prepare for the coming day. Making it to school on time is difficult enough without the added disturbance of carelessly missing the transportation. Oh, well, it wouldn ' t be a complete day without four miles of exercise. And no girl in her right mind would ever venture to class without one more desperate attempt to repair her hairdo. The mad rush in the parking lot is a final effort for last-minute social communication before students are herded in to begin a new day. M As CWfiitfs 6 tH Tk Ddij The tardy line stands a mile long and while morning announcements are being made the latecomers, wearing blank expressions, wait the moment of truth when they will be ex- pected to explain their naturally unavoidable cause of tardiness. On the sound of the bell the halls become bedlam as students emerge from all corners of the building to begin their day ' s work. Occasionally, throughout the day someone who obviously parried all night can be observed with his head on his desk attempting to catnap without being discovered. BitjOijiag iW t C6«Mf)(UttOKS • • • Lunch seems to be everyone ' s favorite subject as it is a time to forget all responsi- bility, catch up on the latest gossip, and enjoy the company of a conglomeration of com- panions without being accused of talking too much. The cafeteria is a crowded place during the lunch hour being only minus a few - the brave ones who believe in risky business and either disappear to their lockers only to retrieve a forgotten book or try their luck at sneaking off to the nearest hamburger joint. • — mjjiy fw l Vajdous KdtMJ The main objective of the Walker Administration and faculty is molding a group of well informed, intelligent students in preparation of their graduation. Not only are they concerned with producing students who will hold commendable positions but will also be prominent and responsible citizens. The Walker High curriculum includes a wide variety of subjects including college preparatory, business, and general study courses. Classes are instructed in an up to date manner with the assistance of an assortment of modern teaching aids which make learning easier and add enjoyment to classroom study. 10 L - 1 b 1 iJ - 1 II 12 There is nothing more relaxing than taking a day off for an afternoon of picnicking at the lake with a group of friends. Pleasure not only comes from enjoyment; it may be gained through successful group effort in organizing successful projects. Participation is a great determining factor in making any endeavor a success. Getting the job done can not only be made easier when everyone lends a hand, but can also be exciting and fun, as the burden of work can be lessened with joking and laughter. Learning to cooperate by working as a group aids students in many ways which are not only beneficial now but will be helpful in the future. 13 fyxui f Kfe Tke Ntgfcfc. A Walker student is rarely wanting for action whatever his pleasure may be. Annual formal events are sponsored which give girls an opportunity to parade in their formals looking extra beautiful and being escorted by distinguished looking young men. The numerous informal affairs give all a chance to let go and just have a good time. Cheering the mighty Viks on to victory seems to be a favorite pastime of all, £ind a home game finds the stands crowded not only with students, but a major portion of the towns ' residents. These and many other activities are available for spending the leisure hours which follow a hec tic day within the walls of a busy school. Streets lines with gay spectators view the imaginative creations which proceed slowly through town with a victory mood being set by the lively music of the Walker Viking Marching Band. Upon arrival in the town square, en- tertainment is provided by the Majorettes and the band, after which the parade once again moves on through the crowded street. 33 A spirit- filled pep rally on the court- house steps prior to Homecoming night set the mood, as a tremendous group gath- ered demonstrating their enthusiasm to the Viking squad. An outstanding halftime performance interested all along with the introduction of honored guests, football- sponsor and maids and homecoming queen and court. Following a suspensefiUed game a school-sponsored dance was held in the Walker High auditorium. The Rainwater, a popular teen rock group, provided the entertainment, concluding an already ex- citing day. 34 35 Wiss Qoodipod ytjdki Ufi 36 I Qoody OiA kf) 60 j Qui ' Gid I QvJk ' yU B(MjS ' Sfatfe Seo i«feuy 01 Sfafe ROSALYN ELLIOT i U Randy Daniel, Mitch McCullers, Manly Cook, Tommy Kelly, David McCoy, not pictured Pete Brignct. 38 U luv ' S U W Ik ' 7 1 MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Jimmy Shaw and Vicki Lee BEST PERSONALITY John Ed McDanal and Janie Ivey WB . ■ J%« ' Vl 9 - i ' ,mj BEST ALL-AROUND Debbie Young and Mitch McCullers MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Randy Daniel and Miriam Wilson 39 iJlGGEST FLIRT Margaret Ann Saddler and Donnie Fewell BEST LOOKING Peggy Snoddy and Phillip Simmons ., I MOST POPULAR Stacia Gambrell and Anthony Swindle MOST MASCULINE AND FEMININE Gene Standeffer and Fran Latham 40 Wfuv ' s WJiO Fh ' 7 1 MOST i;, 5liiLL Joey Stephenson and Betsy Nunn WITTIEST John Ryan and Judy Brakefield MOST DEPENDABLE Robbie Duggar and Elena Paramore Libby Brignet and Steve Bevis 41 Wko i WU Im ' 7 1 MOST COURTEOUS Ronnie Wade and Mary Trimble BEST DRESSED Barbara Buchstand and Pete Brignet MOST INTELLECTUAL Sybil Burton and Gary Kilgo MOST ORIGINAL Leon Goodwyn and Martha Barton 42 WU ' S U luv fn ' 7 1 MOST TALKATIVE Charles Bradley and Betsy Lavanna MOST SOPHISTICATED Rosalyn Elliott and DereJ Jackson CUTEST Steve Kimbrell and Sibby Scruggs £ !5 3i I ' i ' I t MOST UNPREDICTABLE Salieta Scruggs and Reece Rutledge 43 t i cutiv « 45 A Ud At Otw P l tC | at K ' lR. One could readily sense an air of optimism among the Viking supporters as they eagerly awaited the opening kickoff. The Vikings wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Early in the first quarter, John Caldwell got through the Fayette line and blocked a Tiger punt. On the next play, Tony Swindle ran ten yards for the first Viking score. John Jenkins kicked the PAT and the Vikings held a 7-0 lead, a lead which they canied to the dressing room at halftime. After neither team was able to score in the third quarter, Fayette started a drive at the Viking 48 yard line with ten minutes left in the game. Two plays later, Ross Marlow inter- cepted a Fayette pass and rambled 44 yards for the final Viking touchdown. The PAT was wide, but the Viking defense held on to defeat Fayette, 13 to DAVID NORRIS Quarterback JIMMY McCOY Defensive Back 65 Walhm 1 7 G i5So w 6 The Vikings traveled to the Space City of Huntsville in search of their second victory of the season. After the initial drive stalled at the Grissom ten yard line, the Vikings proceeded to drive 63 yards in nine plays with Gary Card going in for the TD. Jenkins kicked the PAT and the Vikings led 7-0. A determined Grissom team stormed back and drove the length of the field for a touch- down. The extra point attempt was fumbled and the Vikings still led, 7-6, at the half. The rejuvenated Viking offense gave Walker a 14-6 lead when Tony Swindle sneaked into the end zone to culminate a long drive. The Vikings put the game on ice when Vince Medlock booted a 24 yard field goal to up the lead to 17 to 6. A concentrated team effort had produced the second win of the season and the Vikings now turned their attention toward a powerful Bibb County team. 66 TYRONE HARRIS Tailback Btbb CouMbj 12 (A q£W9 The undefeated Vikings were again on the road to play the powerful Choctaws of Bibb County. The Vikings had a monumental task before them since the Choctaws were undefeated and featured the services of All- American end Charles Cleveland. Jimmy McCoy set up a Viking touchdown when he intercepted a Bibb County pass and returned it to the Choctaw twelve yard line. Six plays later, Tony Swindle dove into the end zone and the Vikings led 6 to 0. Bibb County was able to tie the game before halftime as Charles Cleveland threw a 51 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was wide and the score was tied at halftime. The Vikings took the lead in the third quarter when John Jenkins kicked a 21 yard field goal. The scoreboard now read Walker 9 - Bibb County 6. Minutes later, Bibb County scored the winning touchdown on a 50 yard pass play to Cleveland. The PAT was no good and Bibb County held on to win, 12 to 9. Two freak plays and countless yards of penalties has cost the Vikings their fust loss of the season. BOBBY FARRIS Split End 67 WcJUk u 2 TuSCOdEoOSO Cou ttj The Vikings returned home to take on the undefeated Wildcats of Tuscaloosa County. In this age of ejq)losive offensive football, the Viking defense proved that defense can still win football games. This game was truly a classic example of excellent defensive football on the part of both sides. Early in the first quarter, Will Fuller tackled a Wildcat runner in his own end zone to give the Vikings a safety and a 2-0 lead. Both defensive units played superb and as a result, the Vikings still held a slim 2-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, John Caldwell saved a touchdown when he deflected a long pass intended for Wildcat speedster. Neither team seriously threatened to score in the fourth quarter and the Viking defense held on to give Walker its third win of the sea- son. Ironically, this would be the only game that Tuscaloosa would lose all year. •i GARY CARD Tailback MELTON FARRIS Formation Back ROBBY DUGGAR Formation Back 68 WcJUkm 14 BuiMuiuup G BOBBY COLBERT Tailback The Vikings were again at home in search of their fourth victory of the season. Early in the first quarter, Ross Marlow recovered a Bradshaw at the fifty yard line. Two plays later, Tyrone Harris raced 43 yards for a touchdown. Jenkins kicked the PAT and the Vikings led 7-0. Outstanding defensive play on the part of both squads enabled the Vikings to carry that 7-0 lead to the dressing room at halftime. Bradshaw got on the scoreboard when the Vikings fumbled in their own end zone and an alert Bruin recovered for a touchdown. Manly Cook made an outstanding play to break up the try for two points and as a result the Vikings still led 7 to 6, Walker put the game on ice in the fourth quarter when David Burton connected with Vince Medlock for a touchdown. Jenkins again kicked the PAT and the Vikings held on to win, 14 to 6. The Vikings had now won four out of their first five games. GENE STANDEFFER Linebacker «9 WoJthty 14 JoU ComM The Vikings were in Birmingham to take on the Cavaliers of John Carroll in quest of win number five. The Vikings took the opening kickoff and promptly drive 68 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Tony Swindle went the final three yards and John Jenkins kicked the PAT to give Walker a 7-0 lead. The Vikings padded their lead with five minutes left in the half when halfback Tyrone Harris threw a 21 yard scoring pass to Robby Duggar. Jenkins was again perfect on the extra point attempt and the Vikings led 14 to at the end of the first half. The Walker defense played courageously all night in keeping the Cavaliers off of the scoreboard. Against a quick John Carroll team, the Vikings forced eight fumbles and inter- cepted two passes. Walker had now won its fifth game, by beating John Carroll, 14 to 0. GREG STARNES Fullback JOHN JENKINS Fullback IIS-,- -af xjL aL HENRY WILLIAMS Fullback 70 JAMES SMITH Defensive End Aiofc 29 WoJlht 21 The improving Vikings traveled to Arab for the seventh game of the season. The first half turned out to be a nightmare for the Vikings, as Arab scored three touchdowns to take a 21 to lead at the half. It would take an almost impossible comeback for the Vikings to gain victory number six against the Knights of Arab. Near the end of the third quarter, the Vikings took on new life as Tony Swindle got Walker on the scoreboard with a one yard sneak for a TD. The two point conversion failed and the Vikings now trailed, 21 to 6. Minutes later, David Burton hit Mike Burton with a 19 yard scoring pass to keqj Viking comeback hopes alive. Swindle dove into the end zone for two points and Walker had now cut the margin to 21-14. In the fourth quarter the Vikings continued to come back when Swindle hit Vince Med- lock with a 43 yard touchdown pass. On the try for two points. Swindle made a tremendous play to get into the end zone and give the Vikings an unbelievable 22 to 21 lead. Arab immediately started to drive on the following kickoff. Shortly thereafter, the Knights scored a touchdown and held on to win a thriller, 29 to 22. In losing only its second game of the season, Walker had almost pulled off a miracle. STEVE TILUSON Defensive End DONNIE MORGAN Tight End 71 WoJWsi Ojjefi ' 12 The Vikings returned home to take on always - tough Coffee. In the initial quarter, coffee recovered a Viking fumble at the Walker 31 yard line. Five plays later. Coffee scored and led 6-0. Walker came right back with an eighty touchdown drive. Tony Swindle capped the long drive with a ten yard run for the TD. The PAT was wide and the game was all even at the half. Swindle hit Medlock with a 55 yard touchdown bomb to give Walker the lead in the third quarter. Swindle made good on the try for two points and the Vikings now led, 14-6. Minutes later. Walker drove 61 yards in nine plays for another touchdown. Swindle again climaxed the drive by going in for the TD, Jenkins kicked the PAT and Walker now held a comfortable lead of 21 to 6. Coffee came alive in the fourth quarter when they marched 70 yards in twelve plays for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the Vikings now led, 21 to 12. With only minutes left in the game. Coffee drove to the Viking six yard line, where their hopes ended on a tremendous goal line stand by the Viking defense. The Vikings held on to win and remain undefeated in the T.V.C. MIKE SCHLITT Center MANLEY COOK - Center CARL KILGORE - Guard 72 CuMima« 6 WoUi BURT RODGERS Defensive End On Homecoming 1970, Walker took on one of its oldest rivals, the Bearcats of Cullman. Through the years, the Walker-Cullman game has always been a bruising battle. This year ' s game was no exception. The first half was a struggle of two superb defensive teams and as a result the score was tied, 0-0, at halftime. After a tremendous halftime show, the Homecoming crowd was ready for another half of football. After getting close on several occasions, the Bearcats go a touchdown late in the third quarter. The try for two points failed and Cullman led by a score of 6 to at the end of three quarters. The Vikings started to move the ball in the last minutes of the game. On a fourth down play in Cullman territory. Swindle threw a long pass to Stuart Upton. The pass fell incom- plete on a very questionable call by the official. With that pass went all hopes of a Home- coming victory. Cullman held on to hand the Vikings their first T.V.C. loss of the season by a score of 6 to 0. PHILLIP O ' REAR Defensive End JACK BANKHEAD Guard 73 DecoiuA 26 WaSk 7 The Vikings were up against the powerful Red Raiders of Decatur in the final game of the season. Early in the second quarter, Decatur moved in for its initial touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the Raiders led 6 to 0, Minutes later, Burt Rodgers picked up a Decatur fumble and rambled 38 yards for a Viking touchdown. Jenkins kicked the PAT to give the Vikings their only lead of the night. Decatur took the ensuing kickoff and drove 70 yards for a quick touchdown. The try for two points failed and Decatur held a 12 to 7 lead at halftime. Walker took the second half kickoff and seemed to be moving toward a touchdown when Decatur alertly recovered a Viking fumble on its 20 yard line. With that fumble the Vikings seemed to lose all of their momentum. Decatur proceeded to score two more touchdowns and defeat the Vikings, 26 to 7. The Vikings ended the season on a losing note and saw their record go to six wins against four losses. RONNIE DAVIS Guaid ■-s; T.t vj I GARY AKINS Guard ROOSEVELT McCAIN Middle Guard 74 iti C MO uhUiUUij For the second year in a row, the Vikings finished the season with a record of six wins against four losses. Walker got off to a fast start by winning five out of the first six games. From that point on, the Vikings seemed to fall inches short of victory on several different occasions and as a result. Walker managed only one win in its last four games. Conceivably the Vikings could have had a 9-1 season with a break here or there. However, those breaks didn ' t materialize and Walker lost four games. Coach Karabasz and his competent staff are to be commended for bringing another winning season to Jasper. The Vikings cap- tured first place honors in the West Point Invitational in December. In January the Vikings regained the County Title by defeating Carbon Hill in the finals of the County Tournament. Walker basketball was again under the able leadership of Head Coach Herbie Greene. In five short years of coaching, Coach Greene has made a name for him- self and for Viking basketball. Under Coach Greene, the Vikings have won four County Championships, and lost only three county games in five years. This re- markable record has made the Viking basketball program one of the finest anywhere. When asked to comment on the 1970-71 squad Coach Greene replied: This year ' s squad will always remain number one in my heart as long as I live. Thr rough life of a coach!!! One of the highlights of the wrestling season was the T.V.C. Tournament which was held in Jasper. The Vikings finished second behind Butler by a scant two points. Although these sports do not attain the level of attention that affords the football or basketball program, they still provide for excitement and keen competition. The track team is headed by Coach David Petty and the Viking speedsters are peren- nially the County Champions. Coach Hermon Davis manages the baseball team in its spring schedule. Under the new regional alignment, the baseball team has high hopes for another successful season. The Viking tennis team always gives a strong account of itself. The number one man on the squad, Pete Brignet, is rapidly becoming known as one of the finest tennis players in the state.
