Prior to these occasions-such as the an- nual Beauty Walk, Homecoming, and the Junior-Senior Prom-the students work fer- vently in preparation to make that particu- lar year's Uspecial daysv superior to those in the past. All are memorable occasions and add spice to the ordinary routine school life. :Q - i as :. xl S 53 1D sports f A major portion of a student's free time is spent either as a participant or a specta- tor in the glorious world of sports. Not only are a variety of athletic skills absorbed and a healthy body developed, but sports- manship, leadership, school spirit, and the ability to accept losing, whether it may be in sports or any other aspect of life, help to mold the character of an individual. Sports play a major and an important role in the activities of our school. W We , ww- i ? 4. Wher- ever one's scope of interests may reach he will undoubtedly find a sufficient means of keeping active. Much experience which will benefit him in the future is secured while at the same time he is kept sufficient- ly happy and content. V in classes 1970 Walker students spend Class time in various Ways, but as a rule most seem to be happy, thus expressing a unique kind of spirit. Classes are conducted in an in- teresting and enjoyable manner while at the same time the most important and beneficial skills are instilled preparing our students forthe challenging aspects ot' life. K 1970 The use of leisure time is more or less an individual selection for a WCHS stu- dent. One spends his free hours in a manner which is most pleasing to him and in such a way that he gains personal satisfaction and receives sufficient enjoyment in his field of interests. in Administration. . . The friendly WCHS administration takes a personal interest in each studcntg guiding him in a suitable manner, depending upon his individual situation. Much serious thought and valuable time is spent preparing our students for thc future. The main objective is not only cultivating learned young adults but in molding the characters of respectable citizens with a worthwhile goal in life and a desire to secure an honorable position in society. Head of Gur Administrative Principal's Message Our goals at Walker are to prepare our students for further study at institutions of higher learning, or to provide the basic fundamentals of education andfor training to help them get started in the working world, and especially to help them become good citizens. We hope that We are meeting our objectives successfully now and expect to do better in the future. ,gwvmln Department-Mr. Felix Smallwood Mr. Clarence White Administrative Assistant Mr. Neal Hyche Assistant Principal if tii 5 ,, , ,,.. , l if 0 f Secretary Mrs. Annis Speed ffice C Staff W l' W LV,, , L 79517 2' , , 'CQ' OFFICE STAFF-Seated: N. With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Henry Williams ran ll yards for a Viking touchdown. Jenkins kicked the PAT and Walker led 7 to 0. Neither team was able to muster a score in the second quarter and Walker led at halftime 7 to 0. Both teams played hard-nosed defensive football throughout the third quarter and as a result, Walker still led going into the fourth and final quarter. With eight minutes left in the game, Walker went into punt formation on fourth down. Deshler linemen got through to block the punt and Deshler took over on the Viking 25 yard line. Deshler quickly made good their golden opportunity as Dale Nesbitt ran 13 yards for a touchdown. Nesbitt ran over from the 2 yard line for two points and Deshler led 8 to 7. Walker was unable to put together a scoring drive and the Vikings lost a hcartbreaker, 8 to 7. sg 1' M 'ii 4 . ,,.. 5 , V I ' 'V W 7 sim 'K 1 A A , , 4-M 4 I w t f' 5 1 ' 2 ' ' ', . The 1969 Walker-Phillips game was played under slightly different circumstances. The Vikings had lost much of their glorious football heritage, since they had not won a game in the past three years. But against a school they had once beaten for the State Championship, the Vikings started up the long road to football prosperity. The Vikings wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. After a fumble recovery gave Walker an excellent scoring opportunity at the Phillips 35 yard line, quarterback Anthony Swindle moved his troops to the Phillips 4 yard line in five plays. Argent made a sensational catch in the end zone two plays later to give Walker a 6-0 lead. Swindle passed to Kilgore in the end zone for two points and Walker led 8-0. Walker was able to hold on to their lead and went to the dress- ing room ahead 8-O. With 3:50 left in the game, Walker was forced to punt. Phillips promtly moved to the Viking 27 yard line. The Viking defense rose to the occasion to pre- serve one of the sweetest victories in Viking football history. Walker had won its first game in three years! Tuscaloosa Co. 27 - alker 21 Seeking a second victory, the Vikings traveled to Northport to tangle with the Wildcats of Tuscaloosa County. The Wildcats mounted a scoring drive in the second quarter and at the end of the first half, Tuscaloosa County led 7 to 0. With only 3:54 left in the third quarter, Tuscaloosa County struck back with another touchdown and held a 13 to O advantage. The Vikings fought back courageously as Donnie Morgan returned the kick-off 82 yards for a Viking touchdown. The PAT was wide and the Wildcats still led 13 to 6. Walker promptly regained possession and scored with Henry Williams going over for the touchdown. The two point conversion was good and Walker now led 14 to 13. Forty-five seconds later the Wildcats scored another touch- down. The PAT was wide and Tuscaloosa County now led 19 to 14. With only 1:20 left in the game Walker scored what seemed to be the deciding points. The Vikings now led 21 to 19. With only eighteen seconds left, the Wildcats upset Walker's hopes for a second victory with a 41 yard touchdown pass. Final score Tuscaloosa County 27-Walker 21. John Jenkins kicked the PAT and Walker led 7 to O. The second quarter was a defensive struggle and the Vikings car- ried a 7 to O lead to the dressing room. The third quar- ter was similar to the second in that neither team was able to mount a scoring drive. Early in the fourth quarter, Larry Lakey returned a punt for 42 yards and a Viking touchdown. The PAT was no good and the Vikings led l3 to O. With only five minutes left in the game. Bradshaw pushed across a touchdown. The try for two points failed and Walker led 13 to 6. A stout defense was able to hold Bradshaw and preserve the second Viking vic- tory ol' thc season. Walker 13-John Carroll 0 Hoping to even its record at 3-3, Walker took on the Cavaliers of John Carroll in the Vikings third home appearance of the season. With 7:33 left in the first quarter, Donnie Morgan ran a punt back for 72 yards and a touchdown. The PAT was Wide and the Vikings led 6 to 0. Early in the second quarter, Donnie Morgan took a handoff from Swindle and ran 24 yards for a touch- down. The PAT was good and Walker led l3 to 0 at halftime. Walkers defense was superb throughout the second half as the Vikings held John Carroll scoreless. The Vikings had now evened their record at 3 wins and 3 losses. Manly Cook Guard Greg Bizjak Center George O'Rear Center Arab 22-Walker 18 With three wins under its belt, the Vikings faced a difficult taskgHomecoming and the tenth-ranked Knights of Arab. With the usual Viking spirit, the stu- dents, fans, and honored guests eagerly awaited the kick-off. Walker got on the scoreboard early with a Swin- dle to Argent pass for 35 yards and a Viking touchdown. The PAT was wide and Walker led 6 to 0. An Arab rally gave the Knights a 7 to 6 lead shortly thereafter. Behind, Swindle drove his Vikings to the one yard line where he sneaked over for the second Viking touch- down. The PAT was wide and the Vikings led I2 to 7. Shortly before halftime Arab scored and took a I5 to 12 lead to the dressing room. With victory in sight, a Swindle to Duggar pass set Walker up at the Arab l yard line. Swindle sneaked over for the touchdown. The try for two points failed and Walker led 18 to 15, late in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, the Vikings drove to the Arab 20 yard line. But, a fumble ended the scoring threat. Arab proceeded to drive 80 yards for the win- ning touchdown. The Vikings lost their homecoming game by a score of 22 to 18. it ,. jg Ricky Tirey Guard alker 14-Coffee 8 Neither team was able to mount a scoring drive in the first quarter of play. Early in the second quarter, Coffee appeared ready to score as they drove to a first down inside the Vikings 5 yard line. The Viking de- fense came alive to put a halt to the Coffee scoring threat. The Vikings got on the scoreboard when Charles Armstrong picked up a Coffee fumble and ran 45 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was good and the Vikings carried a 7 to 0 lead to the dressing room. While neither team was able to score in the third quarter, the Viking defense was penetrating the Coffee line and throwing the quarterback for important losses. A Swindle to Argent pass for 32 yards and a touchdown climaxed a 65 yard drive. The PAT was good and the Vikings held a 14 to O lead in the fourth quarter. With only six minutes left in the game, Coffee brought its homecoming crowd to their feet with a touchdown and a two point conversion. The Viking defense held on to give Walker its fourth victory of the season. Roosevelt McCain G uard Mike Dover Guard Walker ll-Cullman 8 Once again Walker was faced with the task of upsetting their opponents homecoming. Disregarding this, plus bad weather conditions, the Vikings immedi- ately pursued their goal. In the first quarter a Swindle to Morgan combina- tion was good for 45 yards and a Viking touchdown. The Vikings drove through the Cullman defense for the two point conversion. The first quarter came to an end with the Vikings leading 8 to 0. The second quarter was dominated by the relent- less performance of Walkerfs defense. Before the half ended, Walker was able to mount a drive. They were forced to attempt a field goal and Jenkins split the uprights to give Walker an l l to 0 half-time lead. Neither team was able to score in the third quar- ter and another Viking victory seemed possible. Cull- man was determined not to be out done before their homecoming crowd. They fought desparately and were able to score in the fourth quarter. The two point conversion was good. The Viking defense took over and were able to assure victory number five. The final score was Walker l l-Cullman 8. Walker 15-Decatur 8 The last game of the season was a chance for a 6-4 record, and the Vikings were up againstundefeated, untled, fourth ranked Decatur. Although the Red Raid- ers of Decatur were favored, the Viking supporters and football team believed that victory was within their reach. In the first quarter neither team was able to score, however, a fine defense performance was required to keep Decatur off the scoreboard. The second quarter proved to be far more exciting. A short punt gave Decatur the ball at the Viking 45 yard line and three plays later went over for the score. The pass for the two points was good and the Red Raiders led 8 to 0. Minutes later the Vikings came back and Anthony Swindle found Gary Argent for the touchdown pass. Argent was called on for the two point conversion and turned in a spectacular catch to tie the game at 8 to 8 as the half came to a close. As the third quarter developed, neither team could make much progress. Never-the-less, the fourth quarter saw a turn for the better as Walker came alive after an interception by Larry Lakey. The Vikings moved to a first down at the Decatur two yard line and Swindle sncaked over for six. John Jenkins PAT was true and the Vikings had a 15 to 8 advantage. The defense took charge and the clock ran out. The result-a 15 to 8 upset victory, respect, and a 6-4 season. Yes, the Vikings had come a long way!
