THE llllil Plllll' Anything as intangible as a spirit that is The representation of a school is no recent development, rather it is the outgrowth OT years at living. So it is with The Viking Spirit. Walker County High School, as an institution, had been in existence many years betore the term Viking was applied To any of its Teams. Prior to The Tall of i920 The one sport at Walker had been basketball. That Tall a Tew hardy souls dared The rigors of a new-Tangled game and football had its inception aT Walker County High School. The first session was comparatively uneventTul, but There were no serious casualties. lt was in The Tall of 'Qi that Tootball became a major sport. Under The tutelage of Coach Christopher The Team waded Through its opposition without creating much notice until iT met Central High at Birmingham. AT that Time iT was Birmingham's one high school and They definitely felt They were slumming by Taking on a Team made up oT coal miners and Tarrners. By a queer Twist of circumstance The Walker players were unusually tall, big, and blond. That fact, ioined to The viciousness and unexpectedness at Their attack in defeating Central 6-O, led the Birmingham sports writers To refer To Them as the Vikings. A later game in which they deteated Sidney Lanier won Tor them the envied title of State Champions. Page 4
