Q Q00 QS wakengng ' O vol' X O' 1 M waldwick high school Nl A l Sf walgvyick, new jersey sm O Q W The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may also be only the beginning. l 1 I vy Baker Priest l iii' Introduction Awakening does not mean you have cometo the point where you say I have arrived. It is not only seeing the bad, the dishonest, and the hypocritical, but rising above them to see the good, the honest, and the truth. For an awakening is not an armistice, nor should it necessarily be a call to combatg far more, it is a desire to meet the potential of the dawning of life. Awakening is learning to accept our individuality, to build on it, and to act through it so that it can be a major step toward livinga fuller life. Our awakenings-the subtle changes that make us different from day to day, the knowledge gained by our experiences, and the learning to know ourselves-these began the day we were born. Awakening is appreciating our personal identities and accepting the fact that I've Got To Be Me. The most beautiful awakening comes when we see undefined faces turning into friends through shared experiences. It is learning to interpret the thoughts, feelings, and moods of others through their words, tones, inflections, facial expressions, and movements. Q The slow comprehension and the final understanding, the pains, the joys, the laughter, the sorrows the emotions, all add and illuminate self-growth. For when we ask, we seek, when we help, we grow, and when we understand, we love. Thus, life offers so much more than surface reality, for our awakenings lead us to arenas unknown which need not be misty spots on our future roads. Our paths are then paved to fertile, productive lands where, by removing the rose- colored glasses, we can see clearly with unclouded eyes truths. I I 1 9 as ' sh.. Q xii! 3:2-, 's .5- 'x in .. Yet, somehow, the concern that accompanies worr finally leads to effective action and the hope that discovers what can be done instead of grumbling about what cannot. Thus, we set about the task of producing Awakening '72 . We have attempted to communicate a portion of what student life means to us. ln our effort to transmit the ideas and emotions of one person or group to the minds of others, we had to depend on the encouragement, support and cooperation of many people along the way. We were fortunate in having these. Communication, at best, is a very chancy business since we offer to share with others a part of ourselves and thereby become vulnerable. That is, however, the price one pays for loving and giving. We experienced all the above plus t e nagging doubts that perhaps our communication is not worth the risk of acceptance or rejection. But, we persevered and we present this sample of our progress toward true human development. 76 wakenin '72 Editors-Seated fL-Rj: R. White, Business Mgr, S. Koehler, Design Edg K. r As we begin to understand our individual selves, we realize that the most important awakening occurs when we accept ourselves the way we are. This realization then leads us to a better understanding of our peers. Through my involvement and dedication to this yearbook, I have learned that working with other people in harmony is a result of mutual understandings. Thus, we decided upon the theme of Awakening '72. Now that the work on this book is complete. I would like to give my sincerest thanks to those who have worked so dili entl . To Randy White, whose initiative in the business section helimed bring about this yearbook, Sue Koehler, whose aid and moral support helped me through the discouraging times, to my section editors for their patient and timely work, to all those who helped in the production of this book, and finally to Mr. Murray, our advisor, I extend my warmest thanks.
