Grapplers have a good year Bob Tiny Backlund led the way for Waldorf at the National junior College Wrestling Tournament in Worthin on Minn gt I 'I February 27 to March 1, as the team scored 15 points and finished 24th in a field of 72junior colleges. This tournament marked the end of a season in which Waldorf compiled a 5-4 record in dual meets and captured third place in the state meet. Backlund won the state championship and placed third in the national meet at 191 pounds. The only match he lost in the na- tional tournament was to Mike Bay of joliet, Ill., and Bay went on to the championship winning easily over last year's defending champion. The consensus of opinion among coaches was that Backlund and Bay, both freshmen, were the two most outstanding wrestlers in their class and would likely meet next year to decide the national championship. Backlund finished the season with a 17-2 record, with 12 of those wins coning over heavyweights. Other Freshman standouts for the Warriors were Ron Pierce, 167, Doug Betten, 160, and Rick Baethke, 152. Pierce took second place in the state meet and won his first two matches in the national before being defeated in the quarter-finals. Betten took second place and Baehtke won consolation honors in the state meet. lack Woodworth, 145, sophomore, also won second at the state tournament. Other Waldorf wrestlers winning letters were Ron Tesdell, 123, Kurt Gillett, 123, Carl Swanson, 123, Leon Lomax, 130, Rick Kearns, 137, jim Hayden, 145, and Richard Fox, HW.
