Gillespie Nuntii Chapter of Quill and Scroll are the editors ot this book, Their big proiect is to learn about the details ot making and really publishing a year book tor the schoolwone that will reflect all activities of the school. There are not only the editorial problems, but also the business problems ol making the book sell-supporting. As is evident the book carries no advertising which in many yearbooks pays most ot the cost, but which, in the opinion ol this stall, is not the best policy lor a high school yearbook. Members have covered the elementary Hhurdles' ol high school journal- ism, They are admitted to the National Society on four points. they must be a lunior or Senior, be in the upper third ol their class, have journalistic expere ience, and be accepted by the national secretary ot the Quill and Scroll. Though hours of work after school leven the Swing Shiltwl go into the book, there are intervals for social meetings and a New York trip. 99999999999 9999999 999 99999999999 99'f ' 3 ai GJ .Q UI ': I-A-4 Ld uf CD P GJ QD DZ 2 3? Smith T L Millspaugh, Board of Education For more than three years the efforts of our school have been directed toward winning the war and preparing students for their participation in the war effort. Constantly aware of the problems involved in this program, the Board of Education is also looking forward to the program of peace education. Will the buildings and equipment be sufficient for the post-war program of education? Will there be adequate facilities for helping the returning veterans? What will be the growth and educational needs of the community? Will there be sufficient State Aid to carry on an adequate program without increasing the burden of local taxpayers? These are special problems confronting the Board of Education in addition to the everyday decisions that have to be made, such as: How much insurance should be carried? What is a fair salary schedule? What repairs should be made? What improvement can be made in the school program? ... ... ... . .,........x,x..a. - :x4,,XaXa,X.X . .,:,a....a,.a. ...AN.......- XX XrX X X XXX xX XX Xx XXX XXXXX X 6 War Page The Walden High School has whole-heartedly and untiringly contributed towards the great cause for which our boys are fighting and dying. Students and faculty engage in the buying of war stamps weekly. The hornerooms strive to get 100 '70, and many have achieved that goal every week. Many successful drives have been carried on to help the unfortunate, such as the War Fund Drives, Red Cross, Christmas Seals, and March of Dimes. Games between sororities and fraternities and between faculty and students have greatly aided some of these enterprises. Many services have been contributed by the school for the benefit of the war. The faculty renders a great service to the citizens of this town by having charge of all kinds of rationing and rent control. The students, under guidance of several teachers, have knitted and sewed for the benefit of the under-privi- leged. They have mended playing cards for veterans in the hospitals, collected clothing, milkweed pods, and magazines. The office has charge of the regis- tration of boys who become eighteen and are eligible for Selective Service. A very worthwhile project now undertaken is the gathering of information in regard to education for the returning boys. The faculty participates in such village groups as the salvage committee, war bond drives, mobilization committee, and recreation association. The jani- tors of the school do the task of tying and packing salvaged paper which has been collected from scrap baskets daily. ' The Iunior Red Cross has obtained everyone's cooperation in its various drives. A movie was sponsored by this group which tended to encourage. and arouse the students' point of view on the work the American Red Cross does. Movies on nurses, airplanes, physical fitness and armed services training have been shown for the benefit of inducing the children to become better citizens in times like these. Physical Education Department emphasizes fine moral and physical character. Among the subjects taught to increase the students' knowledge in regard to the war are the pre-induction courses in electricity and aviation, and home- nursing courses taught in connection with the Home Economics Department. All subjects tend to emphasize the privileges and freedoms we 'are fighting for. The Library has books and pamphlets on everything concerning the war, which are free to anyone who cares to make use of them. Every one connected with the school is bending all his efforts in every possible way open, to do his share to bring this conflict to an end and to prepare for a just peace. Every now and then the gay young Iuniors have a class meeting ithat's what they call itl amidst the moving books, erasers, people running in and out of the room, singing, and talking. They're a gay bunch! When Robert Liebold. the President of the class, can get the attention of the students the meeting starts. Leola Swinden comes up with an idea for a Iunior Prom . l disagree! yells Ralph Decker. But, after finding what the idea is, he says he might agree. The President asks for more ideas. Allan Whitiord wants to do away with the whole idea, he wants to go on a hayride, and Marie Wilson wants to go roller skating. But, what's this- Doris Stefane thinks the class should go on a picnic. Such variety in thoughts! ln the midst of the arguing it is noticed that Iohnny Iackson is missing. I-le's found calmly sitting on the floor under his desk reading a book called The Finer Things in Life! More students are down on their kneesg seven come eleven CBi1l McGrath, Lewis Terry, Ieanette Penney, and Ianet Ioseiiakj Could they be picking up papers? The President tries to ask some of the students for their suggestions. He looks in one of the girl's seats and there is Norman Donnelly, so he asks for his idea. Norman, however, doesn't want to be botheredg he's too. busy correcting QD Bessie Carroll's bookkeeping which she borrowed C?l from Thelma Bennett. Okay, Richard Terlinger, what's your idea? Hit doesnt hear this because he's too busy wondering how he can stand at one end of the gym and shoot the basketball backwards so it will go in the basket at the other end. Nice trick if you can do it says Clifford Balogh, who is Rit's right hand man, Well, finally someone wants to get down to business, so Emma Shafer moves that some definite plans be made. While all this is going on Doris Anderson came running in and is taking the minutes ..... ? What is she going to read at the next meeting! The Presi- dent, tryig to get more opinions on what the lunior Class is going to do, asks Leona Pulver what her idea of a good time is. With a swooning look she sighs .... The President decides to list the ideas given on the board. He goes to the side board, but he's out of luck. Senior History The present graduating class entered high school in 1941, The dignity of Seniors has been theirs for one short year. Four years ago as Freshmen, they elected Bucky Bartlett, president, The following year when the class moved to the opposite end of the corridor they elected Ray Carroll for president. The futile attempt to collect dues was given up and a lOc dance was sponsored. This was the beginning of the money making events of the now illustrious seniors. During the tenth year, the year in which our country was at war, several boys from the class joined the armed forces: Frank Wagnere-Navy, Warren Roosa-Marines, Iohn DuBois--Navy, Vernon Pinkney- Army. ln September of 1943 the group became upperclass- men, moving up literally to the top floor where they felt their maturity and acted the part, Iohn Crist was named president. Having spent most of the funds from the previous year they sold correspondence cards--very successful financially. With all the money made, they felt it necessary to squander some of it, so gave a party for the dignified, serene, revered seniors. The year ended happily with the sponsoring of their first semi- formal, a very exceptional Iunior Prom. The Iunior rings crowned the year. During this year two more members of the class entered the armed forcesi Paul Vermilyea-Navy and Raymond Noonan-Navy. As seniors the class remained on the third floor, changing residence to the senior homeroom. In September the students got down to hard work , figuring out how many days of school there were before having to leave their beloved alma-mater. This procedure has repeated at intervals throughout the year .... there were times how- ever when they attended to their prescribed courses and did that thing called homework. ln November the seniors presented, They Gave Him a Co-ed , which was followed by a party at Steve Fish's home. Senior Day was observed on the last Friday of each month when all seniors dressed in their Sunday-best with a novelty added on different occasions. An innovation in the history of senior classes was entertaining the faculty at a fun party . ln order to maintain the reputation of sponsoring the best semi-formal dance in 1944 another one was given this year in April, Friday the 13th. Although this is the end of their career at Walden High, where many happy days were spent together, they will carry fond memories of the faculty, who have been not only instructors, but friends as well, and fond mem- ories of fellow-students with whom they have spent a very happy and valuable part of their lives. The year ends with hopes and prayers that those in service may return home in the very near future and the world will know war no more and with a sincere desire that future classes will find the friendliness and enjoyment that this class has experienced in attending their alma mater. . . .- N- NX. .sc.s.x.x.x,s.-x-s.-x- -x-x- -x-x-xfxfx-x-x- X- - - - -x-x-ss -x-x-x-x-x.x-wx-x- 'N'Xx'N'X'X'X'X'X'X' -N'N'N'X' 'N-vs' ' JN' 'NNNN ' 9 , 38 .K Senior Will Q We, the class of '45 of the village of Walden and neighboring communities, County of Orange, State of New York, being sound of mind t?l and body, do hereby draw up and publish, and declare the following to be our last will and testament.
