rirl : 1 I .. i p air ' mum THE SCHOOL encompasses many phases of its students’ lives. For most students the school is where they mature by learning to accept responsibility, share thoughts and ideas, meet new people, and cope with both individual and group problems. Academically, the school strives to impart knowledge to all students. Extra-curricular activities tend to balance the ac ademic phase of the school. The school is the center of student life, and in the following pages lies a resume of the previous school year at Wakelon. In their effort to publish this edition of the WAK-IGH-AN the staff has sought to provide pleasant memories for every student by highlighting important events of the year 1968-69. 2 THE SCHOOL Page YEAR. 5 UPPERCLASSMEN. 21 ORGANIZATIONS . 53 SPORTS . 71 UNDERCLASSMEN . 83 PATRONS .Ill 3 DEDICATED TO MRS. MADYLINE PIPPIN During the past fourteen years she has given unselfishly of her time and talents to Wakelon School. She has greatly influenced the lives of many students and witnessed their educational growth as they have sought to expand their interests and knowledge through our library program. With love, devotion, and deep respect we are proud to dedicate the 1968-69 WAK-IGH-AN to our librarian, Mrs. Madyline Pippin. 4 5 In the FALL as we enter Wakelon High School, the doors are open to a new year of educational experiences. The student body looks forward to the Elections of ’68 as well as various school- related activities. Classes and never-ending quizzes-all will be experienced soon. The WINTER finds us attending basketball games. Snow clouds form and heighten our anticipation of the coming Christmas season. Afterwards our pace slackens, and the determination to continue our pursuit of studies must come from within with the ever-present knowledge of exam time just ahead. We anxiously watch for the first crocus blossoms and other signs of spring. 6 Then SPRING brings new life to the Wakelon campus. The Juniors begin long and tedious preparations for the big event ot the year—the Junior-Senior Prom. There is still much hard work to be done, but this knowledge does not prevent Seniors from counting the days until graduation day comes. For some, SUMMER is the last mile of the journey; for others it is the beginning of exciting and promising careers ahead. For everyone vacation time is finally here. Even so, drivers’ training classes, summer school, and preparations for colleges and jobs consume our time while closed doors at Wakelon High shut out the past and point us toward the future. 7 ADMINISTRA TION The members of the administrative staff express our grateful appreciation to the Annual Staff and sponsor for preserving high¬ lights from the passing scene of 1968-69. We are indebted to them for glimpses of ourselves in the march of days that characterize student life. It has been said that the whole world is but a stage and that each of us plays a part. The important question is, “What kind of role docs each individual play?” We have tried to guide you into a way of life that will help you to seek the best. The future belongs to those who are willing to prepare for it. Some of you will be challenged to meet the issues face to face, while others will shirk your responsibilities. May your lives be fully enriched with God’s blessings and guidance to enable you to be outstanding citizens. Even Mr. Alford lias time for outside activities. Mr. Johnny H. Alford, Principal. 8 Making announcements, typing reports, keeping records, and aiding faculty and students in every way possible are among the numerous jobs performed daily by our school secretary, Mrs. Margaret Bowling. For all services rendered, the students at Wakelon High are grateful. Conferences concerning school classes, reference letters, transcripts, cumulative folders, trips to colleges and technical schools, tests-these and many others characterize the efficient work of our guidance counselor, Mrs. Janet Durham. Her services in the area of guidance are invaluable. 9 HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY Mrs. Shirley Davis: Distributive Education. Time was when the little toy dog was new, And the soldier was passing fair; And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue Kissed them and put them there. “Now, don’t you go till I come,” he said, “And don’t you make any noise!” So, toddling off to his trundle-bed, He dreamt of the pretty toys; And, as he was dreaming, an angel song Awakened our Little Boy Blue— Oh! the years are many, the years are long, But the little toy friends are true! Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand, Each in the same old place, Awaiting the touch of a little hand, The smile of a little face; And they wonder, as waiting the long years through In the dust of that little chair, What has become of our Little Boy Blue, Since he kissed them and put them there. Zebulon, North Carolina 137 THE SCHOOL IN ACTION Make that basket count! 1967-68 Class Night—“Try to Remember.” Question: Have you boys got a permit? NHS inducts new members. Working for pleasure, Wayne? 138 “So little done, so much to do.” THE FLIGHT OF YOUTH There are gains for all our losses, There are balms for all our pain: But when youth, the dream, departs, It takes something from our hearts, And it never comes again. We are stronger, and are better, Under manhood’s sterner reign: Still we feel that something sweet Followed youth, with flying feet, And will never come again. Something beautiful is vanished, And we sigh for it in vain: We behold it everywhere, On the earth, and in the air, But it never comes again.
