It is our hope that she may know the love, respect, and appreciation we feel for her. 4 Academics - ' 5 Administration Mr. Johnny H. Alford, Principal May I take this opportunity to share with you my feeling of interest and pride in Wakelon School. The future of this great school depends upon each of you. You are and will continue to be a representative of our school as long as you may live. It is our desire that you will not only take pride in your Alma Mater but that you will also be the type of citizen who will make us proud of you. The staff and advisors of the Wak-igh-an are to be commended for this excellent record of our school life. The road from the idea of an annual to its completion is a long one. Many details must be looked after; many hours of effort must be expended. For sharing with us the memories evoked by the pages of this yearbook, we say a hearty ā€œthank you.ā€ 6 7 Faculty Mr. James A. Student ideas can be formulated and achieved through the Coun¬ cil’s united effort. School spirit is promoted by the Council and can readily be seen in the student bodys’ co-operation and friendliness with students, teachers, and administration. The organization gives a student the opportunity to strive for self direc¬ tion and discipline in his daily life. The most important function of the Council is to create, practice, and maintain standards of good citizen¬ ship for tomorrow’s adults. As citizens of our school and country our goal is service anytime, anywhere. lb- mTtW m J Betsy Baker; Second row: Billy Moss, Judy Scarborough, Vicky Temple: President 43 Annual Staff Seated: Donna Williams, Jackie Gay, Phyllis Sherron, Arlene Hood, Ruby Creech, Cathy Stallings, Vee Fathera, Judy Scarborough, Debbie Duke; Standing: Candace Debnam, Debra Beddingfield, Vicky Temple, Linda Pearce. 44 Cherrie Bowling, Jeanette Whitley, Co-Business Managers Diann Wall, Editor 45 Membership in the Early Hampton Moser Chapter of the Na¬ tional Honor Society is based on four ideals: enthusiasm for scholarship, pro motion of worthy leadership, development of character, and creation of a desire to render service. Accurate records of the school’s early years have been scarce however, for many permanent records were destroyed when the new high school building, opened in 1926, was burned on November 14, 1928. (This building was soon rebuilt on the identical place and the Class of 1930 was the first to graduate in the present high school building). Shortly before the 1968 Wak-ig-an went to press the staff was able to borrow a copy of the catalogue published at the end of the first session, 1908-1909, thus establishing the fact that the 1967-1968 school year completes sixty years of Wakelon School. We take pride in sharing excerpts from this first catalogue with you. When Rev. O.L. Stringfield opened the first school at Wakefield only one home was near it. The community recognized the nat¬ ural environments and a village sprang up around the school. —In 1907, the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company built its road from Raleigh to Washington, N.C., passing about one mile south of Wakefield. At the nearest point of the road to Wakefield the new town of Zebulon sprang into existence that spring. It soon had several stores and mills, a bank, church, a factory, school building, etc. One straight main street, connecting the towns, had been built by convicts. On both sides of this, lots were laid off and the two towns were fast becoming one. To still further unify all interests, Wakefield and Zebulon school districts in Little River Township, Wake County, were consoli¬ dated, by an act of the extra session of the Legislature, into Wakelon Graded and High School District. A few citizens, mainly the Board of Trustees, had already given assurance of $8,000 to be used in erecting a school building. But to equalize matters, the whole citizenship voted on itself a Special Tax for the school. Next, $10,000 worth of bonds were issued and sold for $10,735.50. Then the county supplemented this amount by providing $1,300. A handsome brick building of eleven rooms, with steam heating facili¬ ties, was to have been ready for occupancy by September 1. 1909. The general spirit toward this new school movement was demon¬ strated unmistakably by one citizen, Dr. G.M. Bell, who gave the beautiful ten-acre site. Wakelon Public High School Building, half¬ way between Wakefield and Zebulon at a convenient distance from the main street for a flower garden and campus, is situated for a quiet study and easy access. Concerning discipline the catalogue states: ā€œWe emphasize the truth, and the beauty, and the goodness in life and have as little as possible to say about error, misfortune, and depravity. We do not see how a positive good can come from pointing at negative evils. We strive to make children strong, honest, and self-reliant by cultivating the conscienceā€”ā€˜Do right because it is right; it is the only noble thing to do,’ is our rule. The sooner each pupil learns proper self-control, the less friction there is in school government. Our discipline is kind and patient, but firm. Insubordination and impudence are not tolerated, and moral lepers will be excluded from the school. Profanity and tobacco in any form must not be used on the school grounds.ā€ In 1908-1909, Mr. R.C. Holton served as principal of this new school with the following faculty: Miss Mary L. Morrison, Mrs. Helen P. Whitley, Miss Minnie Lula Franklin, Miss Ella M. Brown, and Miss May Beck. The Board of Trustees included Dr. G.M. Bell, Chairman; M.B. Chamblee, Secretary; J.M. Whitley, D.D. Massey, W.S. Horton. As shown in the above statements classes were of necessity held in existing buddings until the eleven room building (the front half of the present elementary building) on the new location could be completed. Minutes from the Wake County’s School Board Meeting for Feb¬ ruary 1910 attest to the fact that the new school plant had been in use for several weeks, thus establishing the fact that the first building on the present site was completed and used during part of the 1909-1910 school term. 106 The Wak-igh-an staff wishes to express its appreciation to the many area firms who have made the production of this yearbook possible.
