Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1967 volume:

Wakelon is more than a school—it is a world within a community. Its walls encompass students of many levels and creeds for whom equality begins as a dream and becomes a reality. Wakelon digests and refines each phase of life. Vibrant and spirited with the excitement of youthful lives emerging, Wakelon enduces and stimulates latent abilities, producing useful additions to an adult world. Wakelon endows its students with a love for the challenges of learning and competition. It is a factory whose product is education, not only the knowledge gained from books, but more importantly, the knowledge gained from relationships with fellow students—a factory which continues to turn out the giants of tomorrow. The motivating force behind the publication of the Wak-ign-an of 1966-67 is the desire to express the true spirit dwelling within the hearts of the students at Wakelon High School. This our valedictory to friends, teachers, and one vital period of our growth, is yet our salutation to a future with ever- broadening horizons. Knowing there is an eternal fitness of things, we have been developing ourselves toward the end of finding our individual places in the pattern of life. As the author of Ecclesiastes said, There is ... a time to every purpose. The pages of this yearbook attempt to illustrate both the vitality and the seriousness of our high school days, so that our tomorrows may be sweetened by the pictorial memories of today. 2 A TIME of instruction . . . 11 of co-operation . . . 19 of achievement . . . 31 of fellowship . . . 47 of fulfillment . . . 63 of dedication . . . 102 of remembrance . . . 103 of action . . . 105 of acknowledgement . . . 119 3 the school year of ' 66-67, a joyous time for every fun-loving Wakelon student, the brilliant smiles of the rugged and tough football players as they gaily bounce off a mud stained field after practice; the appearance of two well-known friends of the jet set with words and films for holiday cheer; and the gleeful plea of the sorrowful lion who begs pitifully for an ounce of courage, the experience was a gay one and the memories are now joyful remembrances. 4 homecoming highlights spirited year Mum fUiUSHCHS LHEO, |jAV,r TWm October spun a gossamer thread around scores of Wakelon students, hopeful as Homecoming approached. The annual Bon-Fire was held the night before the Game, the first chapter of the ' 67 Homecoming tradition. The morning of the fourteenth began in zestful excitement as all four classes participated in the final election. The Juniors decorated the platform, the goal posts, press box, and concession stands. The Student Councilers lined up the parade and field formation. All afternoon was consumed with last minute arrangements and car-washings. Half-time activities climaxed the week-long anticipations. After a moment of hushed silence, the decision was announced— Linda Kimball, 1967 Homecoming Queen. 5 mountain scenery, fresh air, a glorious sun and a bit of practice add up to two wonderful weeks for our boys brevard . . . 6 7 8 wak-igh-an 1967 wakelon high school zebulon, north Carolina donna kimball, editor johnny curtis, business manager a time of instruction 10 mr. james m. smith, principal we thank you, mr. smith we thank you, though inadequately, for your resonant voice at the games, in the auditorium; for your steadfa st adherence to truth; for your vision and insight; for hearing us out, truly considering our problems, helping us out; for your smile of encouragement; for demanding our best performance; for your wit; for your untiring energy. planning, work; for your community spirit, school spirit; we say again thank you. 12 we thank you, mrs. bowling and mr. deans. our words of gratitude are ineffectual efforts to express indebtedness felt for your words of wise leadership, kind-hearted friendship. providing dedicated, skillful service, instructing us, aiding us, guiding us. devoted service as our secretary and counselor; your keen sense of humor, your interest in our welfare. we will remember you. mrs. margaret bowling performing one of her many daily tasks mr. james otis deans, our counselor 13 faculty mrs. bessie smith english III, IV, french I, II acc; b. a., ecc; m.a, sponsor: french club and senior class mr. maurice h. chapman coach, world history, phy. ed. , government morris harvey col. , marshall u.; b. s. sponsor: monogram club miss mary 1. palmer home economics peace; unc-g. sponsor: f. h. a. and sophomore class mr. benjamin potter vocational agriculture north Carolina state university; b. s., m.s. sponsor: f. f. a. mrs. louise h. It is an art—the art of expressing oneself coherently, of capturing the wondering attentions of high school and elementary students, of probing the lazy and challenging the industrious and of gaining the respect and confidence of all the students. Bridging the gap between fact and understanding, the teaching profession has finally achieved a position of prominence. It is the divining rod by which intelligence is discovered; the drill by which it is extracted. —copied 17 a time of co-operation 18 19 wak-igh-an mirrors donna kimball, editor, takes a moment out of a day johnny curtis, business manager filled with picture-taking to eat lunch junior representatives: j. The bus drivers are responsible for the lives of about one-half of Wakelon ' s students. They must be able to show authority and good judgment. Somehow, they always seem to accomplish the impossible. The person we commend is the embodiment of this standard and is truly deserving of the honor which the dedication of this yearbook bestows. During thirty-eight years of service at Wakelon, she has served as an inspi¬ ration to students and faculty. Through her warm personal interest and concern for people, especially her Home Ec. girls, she encourages one to give as fully of himself as she has surely given of herself. It is our honor and pleasure to recognize one who radiates the true beauty of wisdom, enthusiasm, and concern for her fellowman... Miss Mary Lacy Palmer. Gladly wolde (she) lerne and gladly teche... Geoffrey Chaucer 102 . . . of remembrance It is with fond remembrance that we, the Annual Staff of Wakelon, choose to retain the memory of Mrs. Marquerite Jones who was killed Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1965. Mrs. Jones taught elementary students at Wakelon for fifteen years. She dedicated her life to helping the young people of our community. Even after her retirement in 1961, she was still a part of school life and she will always be remembered by her former students with a warm feeling of gratitude. 103 a time of action 104 105 to any athlete There are little eyes upon you, And they ' re watching night and day, There are little ears that quickly T ake in every word you say; There are little hands all eager To do anything you do; And a little boy who ' s dreaming Of the day he ' ll be like you. You ' re the little fellow ' s idol; You ' re the wisest of the wise, In his little mind about you, No suspicions ever rise; He believes in you devoutly, Holds that all you say and do, He will say and do, in your way When he ' s a grown-up like you. There ' s a wide-eyed little fellow, Who believes you ' re always right, And his ears are always open, And he watches day and night; You are setting an example Every day in all you do, For the little boy who ' s waiting To grow up to be like you. 106 the power behind the team . . . coach chapman 107 m. edwards, e. smith, r. massey, n. thomas, j. carter, s. vinson, d. pulley; b. johnson, w. mcnabb, d. price, c. pippin, t. gaddy, r. rogers, d. carter; coach chapman, t. pearce, t. price, e. bunn, d. gordon, m. wilson, j. phillips, f. hinton, b. faust 108 wakelon’s gridiron greats drew cannady, statistician; joe chamblee and curtis Strickland, managers Co-captains: danny gordon and bobby johnson w. g. griswold and tony wilson, assistant coaches 109 Main string and one: m. wilson, b. faust, t. price, d. gordon, j. phillips, t. pearce, e. bunn; t. gaddy; f. hinton, b. johnson, d. carter. 110 senior gridders freddy hinton, halfback thurston price, guard bobby johnson, fullback eddie bunn, end thomas pearce, tackle tommy gaddy, quarterback 111 co-captains, m. wilson and e. bunn; t. temple, t. massey, d. price, d. west, d. cannady, m. hagwood, g. cone, t. gaddy, t. lanier co-captains, mark wilson and eddie bunn with coach chapman 112 senior stars of the hardwood drew cannady darrny west eddie bunn 113 k. gay, p. smith, s. perry, v. temple, s. chamblee, c. perry; m. gill, r. baker 1. brown, s. liles, m. pippin, m. martin, b. brantley, b. fathera; not pictured v. gordon mr. james otis deans, coach co-captains vicky temple and sandra perry 114 only 3 seniors help make up the girls’ team carolyn perry, guard kathy gay, guard 115 j. v. cheerleaders pam parrish, susan liles, martha gill, pam jenkins, chief, lou bunn, zahayia kannon, mary jane olive, paula hudson, co-chief. 116 7th - 8th grade football team j. v. team 117 a time of acknowledgement 118 119 PEOPLES BANK AND TRUST COMPANY Robert D. Now piggy banks are wonderful I ittle places to store your left over change, but after a while your money will outgrow your bank, so naturally you go out and buy a larger one . Now if you keep this up, you will spend quite a portion of your money on piggy banks . Just think howmuch better off you could be if your money was in PEOPLES BANK AND TRUST COM¬ PANY in Zebulon. They offer so many ways to save. Go in and see them the next time your piggy bank cracks. You know when you think about it, banks are really nice people. 120 Gold Medallion When you buy or build specify a Gold Medallion Home, and step up to the joy of All-Electric living. The whole family will love it. In a Gold Medallion Home clean, flameless electricity keeps you warm and cooks your meals, heats the water and gives you light for living. And it works in so many other ways to make housekeeping chores easier and living better. P.S. CP L’s rate for all-electric homes has been reduced four times since 1960. Electric living is cheaper than ever. CAROLINA POWER LIGHT COMPANY An investor-owned, taxpaying public utility company 121 The Capital Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Inc.
