The staff of the 1966 WAK-IGH-AN hopes that as you turn the pages of this book, the accomplishments, expectations, triumphs, and all other events which have painted the picture of this school year have been faithfully portrayed. We have worked this year with but one goal in mind, to turn out the best WAK- IGH-AN yet. ' Each page will mean something different to each of you. We hope you will cherish this book and in later years will like it even more as you look back on the 1965-1966 school year. The Editor H ll ahela+i in Liti and i i tcit i abdl ioct and de uowi wllU i MXfhtesi let pxiiclteA,. lacf tlte i we one, and tJ AXH4Xflt time will he threaded ta etkeA !uf a dea a{ memoAled, and ifeile ulLtif,. 3 1 1ST DEDICATION If you were to visit Wakelon about 1:00 on a school day, you would probably see a group of boys gathered around—laughing, joking, teasing. Right in the midst of these boys would be the Coach. This is just one of his various pastimes. He can be seen teasing the girls... testing his World History Class...making the football players run laps.. .sponsoring the Monogram Club.. .or just walking on the football field contemplating. To the students of WHS there is no man who can com¬ pare with him—not only as a coach but as a man. He can be seen standing up for what he believes in or expressing his opinions on events no matter what others may think. It is with all the love, honor, and respect that words can never express, that we, the WAK-IGH-AN staff of ' 66, dedicate this y e a r b o o k to our beloved coach, teacher, friend... Our own. .. Maurice H. Chapman Donna Kimball, Junior Editor 4 Twelve years of work and fun lie behind you as you have reached your ultimate goal- graduation. This year you have seen the previous years and experience pay off. You had a busy nine months doing all the special things requiredof Seniors aswell as carrying an increased load. Now, although the final whis tle has blown to end this p ar t i c ul ar game, you are actually kicking off into a bigger and better game. Wherever your new goals may lead you, Wakelon High School will always remember the class of ' 66 for it was here that your first game of life was played—and won. I hope that each of you realize the am¬ bitious dreams and aspirations that you have developed while a student at Wakelon High School. May you always have a belief in the worth and dignity of your fellowman and gauge your life accordingly... 6 7 MAURICE H. CHAPMAN Social Studies and Physical Education MRS. SANDRA K. These are the people who willingly serve us in such posi¬ tions as janitors, bus drivers, lunchroom workers, and school mechanic. They sweep the floors, wash the dishes, drive the buses and fix them, too. Three cheers for our Keepers of the House. SCHOOL IVrK30P3I-A.3Sri0 ROY MITCHELL 12 nr riVITIH To Learn from books is merely a part of our prep¬ aration; the fulfillment of knowledge comes with working together in the various organizations of our school. In organizations, we learn how to work with others, to lead, and to accept responsibility for perhaps the first time in our lives. Here we can serve our school in many beneficial ways, but more than that we can also serve our community. 13 ■W-A-KL-IG-PI --A.3ST STAFF Far left: JEAN BUNN, Editor. Left: FAYE SAWYER, Business Manager. Typewriters clicking, flashbulbs flickering, tears of discourage¬ ment, smiles of merriment help to make the 1966 Wak-Igh-An have a special meaning to the Annual Staff members this year. We have tried to present our school with originality in planning our layouts, writing copy, taking pictures and soliciting ads. We are only a vertebra in the backbone of our school, elected to lead and to make known the wishes of the students. It is our job to set good examples for our fellow students to follow, both morally and scholastically. Our most important work is in service to our school. We are the voice of the student body in planning school affairs. COUNCIL 15 cz Faye Sawyer, Helen Oakley, Ken Temple, andGraylyn Doyle were chosen by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary as delegates to Tarheel Girls ' and Boys ' State. These students were selected on the basic re¬ quirements of initiative, leadership abilities, scholarship, and personality. During the seven days in which the students lived on the UNC campus, they learned the fundamentals of local, parish, and state govern¬ ments by actually taking part in the elections of the officials of the mythical state govern¬ ment. Through the knowledge gained the Wakelon students returned ready to take a greater part in civic affairs. This years society is very active, undertaking such projects as printing and selling programs for all the home football games, making and selling cupcakes at home basketball games, and selling candy. Funds raised .from these projects will be used to give scholarships to ,vorthy seniors. A needy family will have a Merrier Christmas be¬ cause of gifts from the NHS. Our members are given an oppor- runity to enjoy their membership in the NHS through the social meetings held out of school and most important the annual state convention. This club helps us to escape from our everyday lives into the more fantastic world of Science. We are intro¬ duced to the many different facets of that which links our minds and enrich ourselves to the future. Our main objection is the Science Fair which is in February. This gives each student a chance to portray his talents. 20 LIBRARY CLUB Library Club Officers: Seated: Frank Pulley, President; Debbie Oakley, Vice-President. Standing: S a n d r a Pulley, Se ere tary; Susan Pippin, Treasurer; Diana Pearce, Reporter. Books are the fumigant of ignorance, for ignorance is denial in this life. The objective of the Library Club is to attract and arouse interest in libranianship at Wakelon. The club is still a growing child, however. It needs exercise to grow and to keep growing. This activity in¬ cludes the annual, Candy for Sale. The proceeds pro¬ vide the money toward the purchase of books and maga¬ zines for the library. Susan Pippin represented the club as Miss Library Club, while her co-members excelled in manufacturing a float representing Books Around The World. The crest of their activities is a scrapbook of the outstanding activities of the Library Club and Wakelon ' s Students. Can you imagine Wakelon without a faithful Library- Club? Officers: Kathy Gay, Reporter; Janet Duke, Treasurer; Martha Strickland, Vice-President; Linda Kimball, Secretary; Cheryl Gay, President; James Deans, Sponsor. Boys and girls rushing from building to building, grading papers, keeping classes, washing boards, taking pictures, playing farmer in the dale, and doing many, many other odd jobs are what you will find the F. T. A. students doing. This year we have had an extremely large number of en¬ thusiastic boys and girls to join our club, making it one of the largest at Wakelon. Members have many worthwhile things in store for them as F. T. A. members during the school year. County meetings, banquets, teas, projects and various other things in which the club members work at closely help make up the F. T. A. Each F.T.A. member this year has gained much experience as a teacher and also has contributed much to the school and the student body. What is an F.T.A. member? He or she is a well rounded student participating in most sports and other activities, as well as maintaining a good scholastic average. Have you done your part this school year? Vice-President of the Wake County Future Homemakers of America is our own Donna Kimball. Officers: Lynda Pulley, President (center); Left to right: Helen Mitchell, Treasurer; Patsy Currin, Song Leader; Mary Lou Rhodes, Historian; Jo Ann Hicks, Song Leader; Priscilla Cone, Parliamentarian; Jean Bunn, Reporter; Virgie Alford, Secre¬ tary; Suzanne Beck, Vice-President. A stitch in time saves nine, was once quoted by Benjamin Franklin. The Future Homemakers have been fortifying tomorrow with today. The year 1965-1966 saw the membership of the Future Homemakers a total of sixty-one members. We can readily see this is a sizable figure, but not so when con¬ sidering these are an important part of America ' s future society. To begin with, the old familiar cry of we ' ve something good tosell you, could be heard throughout the communities. With the proceeds the club sponsored a tea for its members—a well deserved treat. The rest of the club ' s activities could be classified as plans, plans, and more plans. The Future Homemakers of America promote and direct its members to better cope with role in the American home. Meeting daily as a regular class, the course ac¬ quaints its members with all kinds of musical expressions, offers the members a chance for developing a literary for music reading, provides the joy of singing good choral literature in four part har¬ mony, provides opportunities for personal growth, and offers pro¬ grams of varied vocal music to both the school and community.
