School bonds were passed. There were games and dances; voices were hoarse from pep rallies, rooting, and singing. There werebrief moments of glory for some of us in sports, musical and dramatic productions. All shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines, the semester grades, the noontime cafeteria rush. These impressions are only a few that were packed into this full year. Credit for the production of this book goes to the loyal WAK -IGH-AN Staff. The staff, however, has furnished only the outlines of the story that we find when we turn these pages filled with warm smiles of friendship and many happy recollections. The rest is up to the individual. Underclassmen who return to WHS in the fall will continue to keep up the high standards of the school and strive for improvement. Graduates will go their seperate ways using the knowledge they have gained here to reach their successes. It is not today that you will appreciate the WAK-IGH-AN. Tomorrow, when it is not so easy to think back on 1964, we will treasure the memories this book has stored for us. Ann Davis Editor PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE Principal C. Cheerleaders threw coveted footballs to fifty lucky people in the tremendous crowd. homecoming Second place winner in the parade was the Library Club float. The National HonorSociety captured first place with this float featuring a clock and lovely NHS members. Miss Vickie Tart assumes band director ' s position at the pep rally climaxing Black and Gold Day. Rushed preparations began for Wakelon ' sHomecoming bright and early Monday morning, October 21st, 1963. This was to be a week packed with hard work, frenzied students, welcomed alumni, and fond memories for all. Thursday was designated as Black and Gold Day as over 250 Wakelonians demonstrated true Bulldog loyalty and school spirit in the school ' s colors. Highlighting Thursday was the huge pep rally and bonfire sponsored by the Monogram Club that night. At last the big day came, and though rain threatened, nothing could dampen the spirits of Wakelonians as they put finishing touches on floats and cars. A fabulous halftime show was presented by the band, and at last the big moment arrived when one of eight lucky girls was to be crowned. All looked beautiful, but none were lovelier than Miss Joan Baker, Wakelon Homecoming Queen, and Miss Betsy Long, our Maid of Honor. Total success was achieved when the Bulldogs downed Fremont 33-12. Miss Donna Faye Stallings, Sophomore Representative, smiles for cameras in the crowd. ’63 Cheerleaders stand in wonder of that last play ! OurQueen was serenaded with favorite melodies as the band, under the direction of Mr. Scooby Burns, played on. Spectators take time out to visit the new concession stand and stock up on eats. Linda Liles, reigning Wakelon Homecoming Queen, stands with the ' 63 Homecoming Court, holding bouquet presented to her prior to the crowning of her new successor. The climax arrives and Miss Joan Baker is crowned Wakelon Homecoming Queen, 1963! The Bulldogs wrap up a very successful evening on the gridiron, the score—Wakelon 33, Fremont 12. Homecoming Queen MISS JOAN KAYE BAKER Betsy Long, Maid of Honor; Junior Representatives, Ann Layfield and Shirley Baker; Sophomore Representatives, Carolyn Dentdn and Donna Stallings; Freshman Repre¬ sentatives, Faye Finch and Sandra Perry. We anticipated a great season, with many lettermen returning; not to mention the large host of new team members. Wakelon ' s baseball facilities were greatly improved with the beginning of construction of a new baseball park. Co-Captains Co-Captains Jerry Brayboy and Ronnie Perry are pictured with Coach Maurice Chapman. Our Coach Maurice H. Cfiapman Our coach is a man of many moods. His influence is felt throughout the school, whether it is the laughing, joking Coach, or the Coach with fire in his eyes and a nice thick dictionary in his hand. In only five short years, Coach Maurice H. Chapman has turned a practically winless team of Wakelon Bulldogs into a team respected and feared by opponents. He may often be seen walking to school.. .telling jokes to thefootball players. . .testing his world history class. ..making his P. E. class line the football field, move bleachers, and other useful tasks. .. in a red tie at the basketball games. . .fussing with the boys at halftime.. .expressing his opinion to anyone who crosses him.. .teasingthe girls.. .standing up for what he believes is right. ..supervising the Monogram Club meetings.. .contemplating, alone, with only a cup of coffee and a cigarette as companions. Activities Though the days are rushed, and sometimes trying, everyone can relax and feel the tension wear off, as Willie, the janitor, sits down and gives the old eighty-eight keys a real workout. Whether in school or out, the extra-curricular activities play an important part of student life, and good times are very much a part of Wakelon High ' s activities. Student Council Seated: Mrs. D.
