CLASS COLORS Green and White CLASS FLOWER White Carnation Sen or Gfass 3 fistory It was on the bright morning of September 18, 1944, that we, the class of ' 56, a group of trembling, shy, young children, climbed upon the first step of our ladder toward graduation. Our fears were banished when we were met by our teachers, Mrs. Eva Page and Mrs. Lois Wall. With their patience and kind words, we finally learned to read, write, and do a little arithmetic. At the end of the year, we were pleased to find that we were promoted to the second grade where we were greeted by the smiling faces of Miss Hardison and Mrs. McDevitt. During this year we improved in our reading, writing, and arithmetic, and began working on our spelling. This finished our second step on our ladder. In the third grade, with Miss Rogers and Miss Yelverton as our teachers, we be¬ gan having more homework. We remember the tough time we had learning the multi¬ plication table. We also remember having contests on attendance and the section with the best percentage of attendance in a month was given a party by the other section. On entering the fourth grade we thought we were quite smart and we admit that this year proved to be a big step up our ladder, for this was our first year upstairs and also our first year in geography. With the help of Mrs. Campbell and Miss Davis - now Mrs. Ben Thomas - we found the subject very interesting. The girls, especially, remember the happy hours spent in their straw play houses in the grove in front of the high school building. In the fifth grade another subject was added, history. This year, as a health project, one section experimented with guinea pigs. This helped us realize the need of milk and proper care. After much studying under the leadership of Mrs. Gregory and Miss Jenkins, we made our grade. Mrs. Wallace Chamblee and Mrs. Lee Currin were our teachers in the sixth grade. It was this year that the two sections became rivals in softball. This year we had white rats as a health project. After having many art lessons and learning a great deal of poetry, we were promoted. On September 7, 1950, we entered junior high. With Mrs. F. E. Bunn and Mrs. Beasley as our teachers we plodded on. This year our hearts were saddened when one of our classmates, Douglas Raper, was hit by a baseball and died. During this year our hardest subject was English, but with the help of our teachers, we advanced to the eighth grade and to the high school building. It took us some time to get used to the bell that rang each hour but we finally managed. In our Physical Education class, the two sections were mixed and we found out that there were some nice people in both sections. Under the guidance of Miss Gladys Baker and Miss Jean Little, we studied much about astronomy and flowers. We remember with a lot of pleasure our trips to the Governor’s Mansion and to the Planetarium at Chapel Hill. At last we became high school Freshmen. To be exact, the date was September 8,1952. At first we feared we might do something wrong; but after being well in¬ formed by our homeroom teachers, Miss Blanche Gay and Miss Melba Strickland, we passed all our subjects and became sophomores. Mrs. Antonakos and Miss Walker, our homeroom teachers, kindly led us through that year. Some of our girls and two boys were chosen to serve as waitresses and waiters at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, which was the highlight of the year for some of us. Even though we all agree that our Junior year wasn’t too easy, it holds much excitement and many wonderful memories. Among those were; the magazine sale, our main money-making project of the year; Career Day, which helped us solve some of our problems about our future; the Junior Play, The Ghost Parade, which was fun even though some of us admit that we had knocking knees that night; that long awaited day when we received our class rings; and the wonderful Junior-Senior Ban¬ quet and Prom that we gave. We would not forget that without the guidance of our won¬ derful sponsors, Mrs. Doris Privette and Miss Frances Walser, all those things would not have been possible. Our Senior year, which we have just completed, holds memories which are dearest to us. The thrill of having everyone in the auditorium stand as we walked down the aisle; the success of our barbecue; the Senior Play, Tattletale ; and our trip which proved to be highly educational as well as exciting. Now with graduation at hand, we should like to say thanks to our sponsors, Mrs. Doris Privette and Mr. Franklin R. Jones, and also to our parents for helping to make this year the success it has been. With all these memories, and many others, forever in our hearts, with true de¬ votion to our school, and with genuine appreciation for all it has meant in our lives, we close the pages of the history of the Class of ' 56 and take our leave from Wakelon. Coming to school, working, and playing together have only been a few of the pleasures that we’ve all shared. Last night I had a dream. I no longer dreamed of carefree boys and girls. I dreamed about each of you, and it was in the year 1966, ten years from tonight. Since you are concerned, I have decided to share this dream with you before we go our separate ways into the future years. No, Wallace Hicks isn ' t married yet. You see, he was a little slow in learning how to tell the difference between phony and genuine diamonds. On the sidewalks of gay Paree we see none other than our little artists, Nannie V. Williams and Gene Parrish, drawing and painting. They have both learned art so well that they paint with only one hand. (The other hand has learned the art of holding a donation cup.) Bobby Croom and Cordell (Satch) Page are now playing football for the Washing¬ ton Redskins. You might have known that Kenneth Eddins and Basil Perry would always stay close together. They now own the swankiest pool parlors and gambling casino in Las Vegas. Some of the girls figured out a way to keep Aubrey Gay from bragging about how many different girls he dated every week. That ' s one I can ' t even figure out. Joe Pippin has just introduced a new field of study at N. C. State College. This one is called Smoochology. His first and most interested student was Billy Bolton. Owners of the Bush Brothers Drive-In Theatre are Victor Pace, Lei on Creech, Benny Mitchell, and Billy Tant, who sell season tickets to teen-agers. We hear that business is booming! If you are in the market for a new typewriter, be sure to consider the Super- speed Error-Proof, just invented by Dottie Privette. Betty Bunn is still determined to get married. She says that Miss Palmer didn’t teach her Home Economics for nothing! Since he failed as a pharmacist, Warren Boykin has returned to his old job - jerk¬ ing sodas for Zebulon Drug Company. After several years, Harriet Pearce has finally proved to the staff at Rex Hospital that she isn ' t a patient. She ' s just trying to become a nurse. Harold Draughon was kept so busy trying to get new cars for all those that he used to wreck that he seldom had time to date Connie. His troubles are over now that he has been elected president of the Ford Motor Company. Jenny Watkins recently published her own joke book. Be sure to get one. It is made up of all the jokes that she was never able to catch. Tony Pearce began his baseball career while at Wakelon. He now plays for the New York Yankees. Billy Joe Bailey has just taken his place in the movie world. He’s so terrific that he replaces two of the once famous stars - Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter. Dot Baker now writes the Dot ' s Advice to the Lovelorn in the News and Observer. Alice Watkins is manager of the Advance Chain Stores. She had her beginning in Hunter’s Five and Ten Store. Yvonne Price is an actress in Hollywood and, boy, is she giving Marilyn Monroe competition. Vernon Pearce and Bobby Horton are instructors at a deaf and dumb school - gee, I can’t understand this, for at school they were always talking. As for Rose Chamblee, she’s doing fine since she introduced wolfsitters instead of babysitters. Betty Baker got her start at Wakelon when she was elected homecoming queen. Just the other day, she made headlines when she was named Miss Universe of ' 66. Nancy Alford has just published her second novel. This one is called How to Get Your Man and Hold Him. Billy Etheridge, who disappeared from Wakelon High School ten years ago, has just been found on Mars. He tells us that he underestimated the power of his car. Annie Pearl Woodard studied hard while she was in high school. We see now that she has a degree. A Mrs. Degree, that is! Barbara Ray has been trying to get her man for quite a while now. Well, for those who are interested, she finally got him. While I was dreaming, I wandered into the theatre. There I met Wayne Boykin, the new owner. As for myself, I was sent to China about six months ago as an I.F. Y. E. Delegate. The main purpose of my mission was to find some new and interesting insect specimens.
