H .df 2 Lt NASCOI5 TommyMBunn I fv I if H QIGSSC Sfigforgo It has been a long voyage on the ship U. S. S. Wakelon, Not many ships take voyages through twelve seas, but our ocean-going vessel has braved the storms, the change of many captains, the stopping at eleven different ports for three months vacation periods, the loss and gain of passengers at each stop, and is now sailing majestically into the port of graduation, our final destination. In 1936 our ship gathered its 83 passengers for the first time and under the guidance of the co-captains, Mrs. Dawson and Mrs. Page we forgot to be homesick and spent most of our time learning to read, write and sit still in a seat. Mrs, Page and Mrs. Dawson left us at the end of 1937 to initiate more new voyagers that year on another ship and ta- king their places were Miss Stell and Miss Smith to be with us on this travel through the second -seas. We found that leaders two new members had made their bunk on our vessel: Kenneth Hopkins and Ben Massey. While on this part of our trio we studied Arithmetic and Spelling along with our usual Read- ing and Writing. In the third sea Mrs. Spencer and Miss Fowler were our We also found we had six new voyagers: Rochelle Deans, Elvera Raybon, S, G. Flowers, Rex Tipoett, Nina Belle Horton and William Fowler. Our most inportant task in this part of our tour was learning multiplication and division tables, We studied the life of the Dutch people and made to those in Holland. We treasured them very were completed, After taking a vacation we found ourselves on another leadership of new co-captains-Mrs. Moser and Five new members joined our narty. They were scenes siiilar when they Yl'l11Ch under the Sitton. Miss Alston and Mrs. Gregory, who new group of voyagers in the fifth seas our home state, North Carolina. In completing this study we made booklets to show our friends and parents. A new crewman, Edward Finch, joined us in the sixth sea. During that part of our voyage we enjoyed several social ac- tivities and engaged in the learning of fractions under Miss Anderson and Miss Wheless. While on the seventh voyage of our school we did some hard work. We were under the command of Mrs, Bunn and Mrs, Chamblee and took several special courses in English, Palmer Method Writing and Art. Clentis Maiden joined us on this port of the trip. Being tired out from long hours of study we went on a summer sight-seeing tour. Upon returning aboard the vessel we found many changes had been made. We had new co-captains, Miss Burnete and Miss Powers. While on this journey we took along with us a new member, Charles Pearce. We now had the rating of junior high school students and took numerous courses which helped us in our future work. we took up the im- us a lot in planning are still guiding a gave us a study of V O O V A.. A . Our next period of traveling was very different from anything we had ever experienced, We obtained the rating of high school freshmen. Our advisers were Miss Olive and Miss Powers. This marked our first year of taking part in the different kinds of sports. Toby Brantley joined us in order to take part in the activities. We had a variety of courses offered, Included in them were Home Economics and Agriculture taught by Miss Palmer and Mr. Bunn. When we were in good condition after the required three months of rest from the freshmen year, we found one captain could now care for those who had been strong enough to brave all the difficulties thus far encountered,so Miss Bright be- came our leader. Tency Pearce and R. P, Pearce Jr. also cam on board with us. We enjoyed this period of sophomore work very much, but enjoying sight-seeing also we went on land a- gain. Going back to our vessel for the eleventh year of trav- eling we were under the guidance of Miss Walker. During this period of study many important things took place. First, we selected our class rings and then we gave the banquet which we call the most important of all social gatherings in high school days to the senior class. We took up advanced courses in several subjects and it seemed to us nearly half of the athletic teams were made up of juniors. During this time of happiness we were stricken by sorrow. One of our most be- loved classmates, William Fowler, and his father were fatally injured in a train wreck. Going aboard our ship last September marked our twelfth year of sailing. We now have stopped at our last port-grad- uation. For this important voyage we have had as our cap- tain Miss Franck, who has proved to be very helpful and un- derstanding, Our crew was 32 strong, .This number included three new members: Richard Cherry from Stokes High School, Marie Corbett, and Vernon King from the junior class. Dur- ing this year we have completed several tasks. The most im- portant of these were the annual and the senior play. We at- tended the Junior-Senior banquet and several entertainments which we'all have enjoyed, It is with a feeling of mixed emotions that we leave the U, S. S. Wakelon. To the various captains we give our sincere thanks for their helpfulness, The class and school mates we leave behind will long remain in our memories. But, this class, realizing the great opportunities in life await- ing our grasping and struggle for them, hope in some way to repay those debts we owe to our ship, so that the U. S. S. Wakelon may be as proud to claim us for their former voyag- ers as we are to claim her as our mother ship. Hilda Baker Class Historian vi , 415 EE, hgf P I4 fix I Ah milf? As we gaze into the crystal ball, we see the form of a great city come into view. As the view becomes clearer we can see large buildings which seem to reach to the sky. In one of these skyscraoers is located the office of one of the greatest doctors in New York City. As we look into his office, who should we see but Hilda Baker, who is serving as his receptionists. As we gaze upon the building, our attention is attracted to the Metropolitan Opera House at which Virginia Bobbitt is making herself famous as a singer, When our gaze falls upon Times Square,we see children crowd- ing around a peanut wagon which is attended by R. P. Pearce. He has come to New York City to seek his fortune after his retire- ment from farm life. We wonder what is causing the traffic jam that is worrying police so. It is the great throng of people going to see Ken- neth Hopkins, who as conductor of the symphony orchestra, is a sensation. We catch a glimpse of Hollywood with its gay crowds and daz- zling night clubs. As we look into one of its swankiest night clubs, we see Inez Hodge. She is escorted by Guy Madison who is co-starring with her in her new picture, UShe's Too Fat for Me.n We find that Toby Brantley, after studying French for lO years, has finally succeeded in translating the first lesson in Book . Bobby Vance Brown is being tenderly cared for by friends and relatives while he is slowly recovering from burns which he received from the Atom bomb he invented. . Richard Cherry is still trying to replace his 42nd cousin as governor of North Carolina. 1 Eupearl-Cunningham has succeeded in overcoming her dislike for Science and is now majoring in Physics at Duke University, ,The crystal ball reveals a wonderful future for Rochelle Deans. She finally becomes the wife of John D, Rockfeller XIV, Marguerite Duke has inherited the Pine State Creamery from her one and only beau, Shelton Bunn. She is now spending her time milking cows. A scene of Hopkins Cross Roads comes into view. We see Gen- navee Ellington busily at work in her modern office because of her interest in pleasing her boss. She is now secretary at Jacks son's garage. We find Lillie Ferrell in her charming home. After operat- ing a beauty salon for 20 years, she has given up her work to take care of her dear husband, James Debnam and their little ones. Beside highway 26Y+ we see a little white cottage which is owned by Edward Finch, who, having lost his childhood sweetheart, has settled down to bachelorhood. As we look farther down this highway we see Massey's hatch- ery, which is now owned by Ben Massey, who has finally decided to raise hens for 20 years without success. Nuff! 5' 'x ffl, my 1 4 I -il The next thing re see is our dear Alma Mater,Wakelon. Here we find Charles Pearce who once made shallow grades in Physics has mastered the subject so well that he is now on the Wakelon staff as a brilliant Physics teacher. We also find that Frances Phillips has joined the staff of Wakelon where she finds it interesting to give her loving care and guidance to the pupils of the fifth grade, As we view Zebulon in the crystal ball,we find that some of 1948's graduates have found profitable positions in their home towns. We see that a new building has been erected in which S. G. Flowers, HBig Time Lawyern of Zebulon, has his supposed to be, law office. We find that Nina Belle Horton has taken the position as Bookkeeper for Carolina Power and Light Company. Because of their charming new secretary, Marie Corbett, Little River Ice Co. is having no trouble in getting employees. Betty Lou Blackley, gpw married to Lindberg Ray, is liv- ing in the home of her dr ams where she is kept busy by her little Lindys. We find 'that Roderick Horton has graduated from college after studying engineering for four years. He is now an engineer in the jungle but cannot carry out his plans because of Tarazan and his friends, Bobby Pace has never given up his childhood ambition and is still trying to get to West Point, We see another Aof our '48 graduates who has made quite a prosperous marriage. Minda Pearce, after serving as secretary to Henry Ford V for several years, has taken him as her- lawful and wedded husband, and never gives Edward a thought. Lindberg Ray, after finishing mechanical school, has set up a business of his own. He has attained Betty Lou as his life helper. - Charles Perry has gone into the movies where he is now thrilling the ladies with his handsome charm. On a cattle ranch, we find Rex Tippett, who is a very suc- cesful cattleman. He has persuaded Louise Scarboro to be his life's companion. A Doris Creech, now married to Luther Price is living a hap- py life in the big city of Wakefield. Ramona Pearce, having tired of keeping house for her daddy, has started keeping house for her Johnston County husband. We find that after courting Lillie for 25 years, James Deb- nam has persuaded her to say yes to his proposal.
