Rush hour traffic Wakefield students fill the halls in the last-minute rush before school begins. Since 1953, Wake5eld,s first year of operation, the student's day, like the building, has undergone con- siderable change. In 1953, the student rose at 8:00 and rushed to the bus stop, hoping to catch one of the unpredictable buses. Now, the student awakens at 6:45 and, less than an hour later, half-dressed, still asleep, and with- out breakfast, dashes out the door to the bus stop hoping that the bus will not be as punctual as usual. On the bus, then as now, the student, holding a load of books in one arm and clinging desperately to the back of a seat with his free hand, manages, if he is lucky, to maintain a somewhat upright position during the rough trip to school. If, however, by some stroke of luck, he gets a seat, the student perches precariously on the edge of the seat, defying gravity at every turn. Now the student walks easily across unobstructed, paved sidewalks into the building. In the cafeteria, where he must wait until 8:00, the student thankfully gulps down the continental breakfast of coffee or juice and a roll that is served daily. Then he plods resignedly through che crowded halls to his locker, which never opens.
