The faculty supervises the general scope of activities, scholastic or otherwise. The student studies his subjects, the athlete plays his sports, and the socialite seeks enter- tainment. Many students also participate in various phases of extracurricular activities. Each person learns and practices the fields for which he is best suited. The senior represents the finished product of this process. Thus, in a very real and imminent sense, the high school student is preparing himself for whatever is to be the next step in his life. 2 TABLE OF CDNTENTS Dedication 5 Faculty 6 Academic Life 16 Activities 28 Candids 5 8 Sports 68 Graduates 90 Advertisements 142 3 Editorial S tafi' Josephine Breslin Patricia Conway Sandra Eager Carole Greene Susan Halloran Martha Hodgdon J ospeh Hugo June Lockhart Jack Loomis Eleanor MacDougall Karen Marshall Linda Minichiello Barbara Nute Meredith Prowse David Shahood Gloria Shahood Carol Whittemore Gracie Staffs C o-editors Class Editor Copy Editor Photo Editor Art Director Feature Editor Sports Editor Business Co-managers Art Staff Barbara Davis Pamela Davis Patricia Fielding Ann Grafton Sharon Grout Marcia Miller Aden O'Dorney Barbara Puglisi Janet Murray Michael Breton Brian Barry Donna Weller William Sousa Carol D,Andrea Geraldine Maloof Brian Beaulieu Frank Ruderman Susan Ball Business Staff Maria Alessi Frederick Beyer Pamela Breeden Kathleen M. We delve into the works of great writers, both past and present, and begin to realize the importance of literature. Our means of communication is broadened, and we are taught to think independently. 18 Foreign Languages Foreign Language courses not only teach us to speak and write in another tongue but also give us an insight into the country itself. We learn about the culture and heritage of other lands and, in this way, we are better able to promote understanding between the peoples of the world. NTI Mathematics I ',a1,,.,,. 9' ai uv. I' Mathematics is the tool of science. With this we are able to describe nature and our environment in precise terms. Without it the world as we know it would cease to exist. It is important, therefore, that here at Wakeiield our varied choice of courses provides a sound basis for any desired future study in this field. . F . cg, , .. I Science 1'-Yi .A A ,Y 436' -1.-1 rr -..-JL Science is one of our largest departments. Students are offered courses in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and, just recently added, Physiology. Here we try to enlighten ourselves by studying the nature of life and its environment. Through courses like these we may be able to dispel dangerous superstitions, cure now incurable diseases and extend man's realm of power. i i YES. 'ii U' A -RZ il l ,,, . V , W, rf 21 Social Studies Iii In our Social Studies classes we de- velop an appreciation of our heritage and that of the peoples of the world. We in- vestigate political thought and gain a deeper understanding of current events 's ,ff -23 jj, by comparing them to trends of the past. The successful completion of these courses make us better informed and more aware of our responsibilities as citizens. Business Education me S The principles of office work are re- lated to the daily lives of all of us. In the Business Course we are taught not only p to manage our own affairs wisely but are taught the importance of accuracy, upon which the success of business enterprise depends. 23 Practical Arts e-'fi ' 1 r 9...Q 24 Shop Through extensive courses in Practical Arts we learn to use our hands in order to provide for our homes and families. We learn arts which will enable us to be- come skilled workers, capable parents and useful members of our communities. Home Economics Fine Arts In Fine Arts we express our creative ideas through many media. Our person- alities are evident in each finished prod- uct. We strive for individuality, for this is the mark of a true artist. Mechanical Drawing Mechanical Drawing is one of the most popular electives offered. This subject not only teaches the mechanics of working drawings, but also develops a construc- tive imagination, a strong sense of visual- ization, and an exactness of thought so necessary to our daily lives. The depthful unit held five opponents scoreless and four times ran up a score of 34 points. Under the training of Coach Tighe and his staff, co-captains John Shevlin and Richie Nardone led the gridsters to eight wins, including victories over two class A teams. Belmont had been unscored upon until it played the Warriors, then Water- town fell to Wakef1eld's attack. The traditional Thanksgiving day classic with Melrose was played in the pouring rain on a swamp-like field, which hampered the efforts of both clubs, resulting in a scoreless deadlock. It was probably the best running unit in the history of the school, but it nevertheless relinquished its title to our old foe, Melrose. Co-captains Craig Worden and Jack Loomis will be remembered for their many double placings in league competition. They were followed across the finish line by other varsity runners, who were John Boody, Charlie Curley, Mike Collins, Frank Amazeen, Joe Hugo, Dale Marshall, Mike Breton, Frank Ruderman and Peter Calore. I l f U 1 .x W This year the Warrior basketball team completed a most successful season by tying Stoneham for third place in the Middlesex League. Tri-captains John Shevlin, Billy Wallace and Alan Thornton were the mainstay of the squad, which was coached by Frank Charbonneau. The most memorable occasions for the cagers were the two victories over top- notch Melrose. They finished with a 9-6 record, one of the best in modern WHS history. They sorely lacked height, and with this advantage they could have gone even farther. Dick Boyd, Ken Chase and Jon Cucinatto are the other seniors on the team. i 76 SCORES Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Wakefield Saugus Lexington Winchester Belmont Concord Reading Stoneham Melrose Lexington Winchester Belmont Concord Reading Stoneham Melrose Hockey The slow-starting Warriors skated to a winning season with a solid third place in the Middlesex League. Wakefield was the team that beat the best teams and upset the league leaders in two exciting tilts. First to fall was Melrose, which succumbed 2-0, and Coach Charles Kirk's pucksters ended the season on a high note by trouncing Belmont 3-2, a feat that gained them an invitation to the state playoffs. Led by Captain-center Tony Coccoro, the Warriors were a superior defensive club, thanks to the efforts of goalie Bob Ring and defensemen Harry Lilley and Jim Langlois. Senior John Theodore was the team's high scorer, and Bill Barry saved the day more than once. L.- - 7--.... n Q O 9 :Ie-'aff' ,4' eip' . -jk'--x.-:'--. .U ' ..
