Mr. Gregory Evensen Superintendent Why did you come to Wakefield? I was raised in the U.P. and wanted to come back to an area I was familiar with. Additionally up until the present, Michigan Education has offered some strong advantages over area states as well. What do you like about being Superintendent? In the most ideal situation, being a force for positive change is appealing. During this year, as you know, we have faced some very difficult problems that have upset a number of people. These are unfortunate but necessary. How does Wakefield compare to other schools you have seen? The teaching staff is very dedicated and responds well under difficult conditions. Students for the most part are taking their education seriously as they should to prepare themselves for a very competitive job market. Will there be any changes in the curriculum for next year? No. As our financial picture improves, I hope we will see some upgrading of curriculum and general improvement in study resources. Mr. Robert Rickard Principal What do you like about being principal? To me the important factor is working with the young people of this area. I enjoy watching students grow and develop into fine young citizens of this community. It's also enjoyable to watch as they make decisions that may affect them in the future. It’s a pleasure to watch them perform in athletics, band concerts or in other extracurricular areas. Why did you choose to become our principal again? I felt that I could do more for the district as principal than I could as superintendent. I also felt that I would lose contact with the students as superintendent and this is something I did not want to happen. How would you like to improve Wakefield High School? One of the first areas that I would like to see improved upon is our area of studies. I would like to see some more elected areas of courses available. This will only come about when we come out of our money problem. I would like to see better attendance by students in this school. Too many students stay home for reasons that are not the best. Students have to learn that it is their responsibility to have good attendance. The first question many employers ask about someone is, “How was their attendance?”. The next area of improvement would be self pride. Many students have to learn to develop pride not only in themselves, but in the school. They have to have respect for other people’s property and surroundings. 4
