I I 1 Dedication We, the class of 1988, wish to dedicate our Echo to the Past, Present and Future Committee. The students of our school, the members of the faculty, administration and the members of our community who served on this committee, worked hard to save our school. School prepares us for the future. It is a time for learning, making friends and making memories that will last a lifetime. We wish to thank the Past, Present and Future Committee for working so hard to keep our school open. 2 Mr. Gregory Evensen Superintendent Why did you come to Wakefield? I was raised in the U.P. and wanted to come back to an area I was familiar with. Additionally up until the present, Michigan Education has offered some strong advantages over area states as well. What do you like about being Superintendent? In the most ideal situation, being a force for positive change is appealing. During this year, as you know, we have faced some very difficult problems that have upset a number of people. These are unfortunate but necessary. How does Wakefield compare to other schools you have seen? The teaching staff is very dedicated and responds well under difficult conditions. Students for the most part are taking their education seriously as they should to prepare themselves for a very competitive job market. Will there be any changes in the curriculum for next year? No. As our financial picture improves, I hope we will see some upgrading of curriculum and general improvement in study resources. Mr. Robert Rickard Principal What do you like about being principal? To me the important factor is working with the young people of this area. I enjoy watching students grow and develop into fine young citizens of this community. It's also enjoyable to watch as they make decisions that may affect them in the future. It’s a pleasure to watch them perform in athletics, band concerts or in other extracurricular areas. Why did you choose to become our principal again? I felt that I could do more for the district as principal than I could as superintendent. I also felt that I would lose contact with the students as superintendent and this is something I did not want to happen. How would you like to improve Wakefield High School? One of the first areas that I would like to see improved upon is our area of studies. I would like to see some more elected areas of courses available. This will only come about when we come out of our money problem. I would like to see better attendance by students in this school. Too many students stay home for reasons that are not the best. Students have to learn that it is their responsibility to have good attendance. The first question many employers ask about someone is, “How was their attendance?”. The next area of improvement would be self pride. Many students have to learn to develop pride not only in themselves, but in the school. They have to have respect for other people’s property and surroundings. 4 Back Row: Rod Ritter — Treasurer, Leonard Perttula, Charles Picoldi. Olivier’s hobbies include photography, tennis, and playing basketball. He likes both classical and rock music. Olivier came to America to get a better understanding of the English language. He also wanted to study math and Physics. He plans on becoming a pilot. When he goes back to Belgium he will take an exam to become a pilot. If he does well on this test he will be able to go on and take a three year course in piloting. Oliver will be staying here until the summer of 1988. His host family is Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wuorinen. The majority of the students of Wakefield High School were upset about sports being cut at the high school. They were happy with the immediate support that the program got from the community. One of the reasons that people think we should have sports is that they keep the kids out of trouble and off the streets. Sports also keeps them interested in their school work. This is because students participating in a sports program have to maintain a set grade average. If the students had the chance, they would make many changes in the school. School would start later and end earlier. Everyone would get rid of study halls because they feel that it’s easier to do homework at home. Other suggestions were: less homework, open campus for all grades and more classes that would “interest the kids.” (?) They also want more sports activities and education on drugs. School would be cancelled when the temperature reached 20 below, because it is difficult not only for bus students, but especially for those who walk or have their own cars. The students would also like to see a “student hall” with an entertainment center, so that students with extra time could spend it there. The students would like to see many more classes and clubs. Some of these classes would include pre-algebra, skiing, dance, drama, and marriage classes. The clubs that they want are gymnastics and SADD. There also would be more pep assemblies and a monthly newsletter. We asked the students who their favorite teacher was. Every teacher was mentioned. They liked teachers who didn’t give a lot of homework, explained things on a kid’s level, were “nice,” and were willing to help. They also liked teachers who were “humorous,” teachers who didn’t let kids “monkey around,” and in one case, a teacher who “helped me learn to control myself better.” We asked the student body what they plan to do with their lives. We received numerous answers. Some of the answers were as follows: become a D.J., school teacher, lawyer, dentist, private detective, stewardess, zoologist, artist, social worker, pharmacist, architectural engineer, cosmetologist, nurse. Some said that they would spend their lives spreading joy. Others said they would get rich, find a cure for the common cold, and change the name of the United States to “Yooperland.” There were many, many, “I don’t knows.” There were all sorts of events that the students considered to be the main media event of the year. Some were: the Iran Contra Scandal, the release of the album Hysteria, Madonna and Sean’s possible divorce, the stock market crash, pit bulls, AIDS, the N.F.L. Football strike, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s problems, banning of ATVs, and Lisa Kolesar the Ironwood child who had a liver transplant. One student mentioned the nuclear war, which no one else seems to remember! 38 19 8 8 fcVliLMV IrlililllrlL Standing: Emily Luoma, Chris Soumi, Niki Petranek, Jill Vittone, Tess Harju, Julie Linn, Nikki Yatchak, Lisa Negro, Michelle Torkko, Doug Richter, Jessi Decker. President — Ross Solberg Vice-president — Jeff Luoma Treasurer — Henry Risen Secretary — Chanda Pikka The Student Council started off by sponsoring the Homecoming Dance, which was a big success. The council donated a new Coke scoreboard to the high school through an agreement with Coke products. Even though the machine is not a big money maker, the council was happy to go through the trouble to donate it to the student body. The council also organized Parent’s Night for the athletes and donated the flowers that were used. The council also donated $200 to help the sports program this year. The Student Council hopes for the same enthusiasm and support next year. — Chanda Pikka 40 LILLrLI tLraiiLL LJOJIiL ft to Right, Top to Bottom: Katie Davidson. Lynn Sawaski, Jimmi-Jean Swett. LrliLLlrLUit IrliLtilitfm Boy’s Tennis Coach Eugene Maki The 1987 boys tennis team had an outstanding year. Our team was made up of 9 players. Leading the way was our only senior the 1 singles player, Kevin Marttila. Our 2 singles player was a junior, Brent Backman. Rounding out the singles at 3 was junior Kevin Green. He was voted the most improved player. The 1 doubles team was made up of John Houle and Jeff Luoma, both sophomores. John was named MVP. The 2 doubles team was also made up of two sophomores, Mark Lane and Chris Suomi. Mark was voted Most Humorous. The 3 tandem was made up of junior Donnie Krznarich and sophomore Mike Franklin. Mike was voted the Sparkplug of the team. Donnie was voted Rookie of the year. The team is looking forward to another successful season! — Mark Lane 52 Boys Track Coach Allen Davidson The 1987 Track and Field squad led by Rick Hemming, Brian Pedrin and Ted Ozzello enjoyed a successful season. Many personal records were achieved by the athletes. Though the Speedboys were heavy favorites the Cardinals won both the Great Western Conference Championship and the Regional Ciass D” title. Ross Solberg, Mike Mis-kovich, Scott Sturkol and Brian Pedrin set a new school standard in the Two Mile Relay with a time of eight minutes forty-three seconds. Other athletes completing the team were: Lee Hocking, Chad Miskovich, Henry Risen, Bill Blodgett, Dave Rau-tiola, Doug Richter, Dane Valesano, Mitch Movrich, Marty Ikola, Bill Luoma and Scott Whitley. — Allen Davidson Girls Track Coach Valesano “Hard working,” dedicated” and great attitudes are a few words that come to mind when I think of the 1987 Girl’s Track team. All season the girls kept up a record setting pace — we finished the season with five firsts, two seconds and a third. We also defended our Great Western conference title. The biggest thrill however, was placing Runner-Up” out of 28 teams in the U.P. Finals in Marquette. Girls Volleyball Coach Gwen Keckeritz At the beginning of the sea son we knew that we wouli be a strong team this yea since we didn’t lose anyom to graduation. This season si far has gone extremely well We have entered a few tour naments and have shown thi other teams that we meai business this year. I hope tha we continue to play well fo the rest of the season and di well in our district tourna ment at the end of the year Girls Tennis Coach Eugene Maki The 1987 Girls’ Tennis team had an exceptionally interesting year. There was a record number (11) freshmen who came out for the team. Although the records didn’t show it, we all played well and gained a lot of experience, while having fun! The members of the team, their ranks, and what they were voted are as follows: singles, Toni Hamilton, Captain and co-most humorous. A transfer from Ironwood, 2 Singles, Carrie Bras-penick, was voted co-most humorous co-sparkplug, and most valuable. 3 singles was freshman Niki Pe-tranek, who was most improved. The 1 Doubles team consisted of Laura Rouse and Diane Kivi, who was voted co-sparkplug, the rookies were the 2 team Sandy Braspenick and Sherry Mattson. The 3 Doubles team was Tracie Hamilton and Terra Menghimi. The Seven alternates who did not see a lot of playing time but will next season for sure, are: Jennifer Mann, Tess Harju, Shelly Bertetto, Mikaele Miskovich, Jana Pleshe, Barbra Anderson, and Rachel Halberg. — Toni Hamilton Football Coach James Engel The 1987 football season produced some outstanding team and individual performances. Junior FB Bill Blodgett reaped the benefits of the fine play of the Cardinal offensive line by rushing for 1,187 yards on 172 carries. That's an average of 6.91 yards each carry. The offensive line featured the blocking of center Steve Lane, Guards John Kivi, Scott Brogan and Doug Richter, Tackles Dave and Chad Saubert and Ends Henry Risen, Brian Perttu and Scott Whitley. They paved the way for 300 total yards of offense per game. Rick Hemming completed his career by playing every second of each game. That makes 27 straight games, 1296 plus minutes, without missing a single play! Rick also amassed some impressive stats. They included a season high 91 tackles, 98 carried for 495 yards, 6 pass receptions for 163 yards and 10 kick returns for 226 yards including a 85 yard TO. Other team members include QB — Ross Solberg, HB — Dave Rautiola, QB — Dean Doney and OG — Mitch Movrich. The team was coached by James Engel and Allen Davidson and managed by Lee Hocking. — James Engel Girls Basketball Coach Ed Smith After the season ended, I met with my team alone in a classroom, planning to express to them how much I appreciated all they had done; how especially cooperative and great they were to me as their coach. I wanted to tell them how proud I was to say they were my players. I failed, as I did something they had never done in a ball game — Choked! Now the editor of the school Echo gives me a second chance to let the eight senior girls of the basketball team know what a special part of my life they have become. Their won-lost record, championships, and honors are well documented. But there is a great deal more to them. A coach could not even begin to wish to have such a dedicated and understanding group of individuals for senior leadership. They made my job very easy. I beam with a great sense of pride whenever anyone asks about them as a team or individually. Quality people they are, and I sincerely wish the very best for them for years to come. So to the team and especially the eight graduates, I thank you so much for a season to remember. I will miss you all and hope you have fond memories of The Best Time of the Day.” — Ed Smith Boys Basketball Coach Ed Smith Congratulations to the boys' varsity basketball team for their fine season and Western Conference Championship. This is the first such championship won by a Wakefield Boys’ team for quite some time and all members can be proud to have contributed to that Championship. I hope all of the teams’ players not only learned a great deal about basketball, but also about themselves as being competitive and tough minded individuals and disciplined to be able to meet any challenges that may face them later in life.
