Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1961 volume:

The Echo 1961 Wakefield High School Wakefield, Michigan i Foreword In the first edition of the Echo, the foreword was, as follows: I represent the first real annual of the Wakefield Township High School. I feel like one who leaves his infancy: I have been furnished a voice with which to speak, however diminutive and imperfect it may be. I shall try to reinstate the happy voices of school days in the future years. I shall try to help the dear grads relive the spirited days with their Alma Mater. I shall speak the words of golden memory, for I am THE ECHO. As this is the Golden Anniversary Echo, we, the editors, wish to reiterate the thoughts of former graduates, that our book may, too, relive our joys in future years. 2 Table of Contents ADMINISTRATION -Page 5 to Page 12 SENIORS - Page 13 to Page 28 CLASSES - Page 29 to Page 40 ORGANIZATIONS -Page 41 to Page 52 ACTIVITIES - Page 53 to Page 62 ATHLETICS - Page 63 to Page 80 3 Dedication We, the Class of 1961, proudly dedicate this golden issue of the Echo to the 2, 516 graduates of Wakefield High School, These graduates, scattered to the far corners of the world, have served their community, church, and country well. Thirty-three gave up their lives for us in an effort to make this a better world to live in. All walks of life are represented in this vast group of former Wakefield students. If we, the members of the Class of 1961, can do as well as they have done, we will be truly thankful. 4 CARL E. KLEIMOLA Superintendent Principals HARRY B. SUTTER Principal FRANCIS W. It was named after Miss Mary McDonald, who served in the Wakefield school system for 35 years. The charter members of the group were Sandra Gates, Barbara Sachs, Martha Haukala, Dorothy Popovich, Carol Jose, Emily Mattson, Sylvia Saari, Anna Trolla, Gail Eschenbauch, and Pasty Huttunen. Several of these girls are teachers today. Miss Alfie Windberg has been the sponsor for the past seven years. Miss Ella Noll became co-sponsor in 1956. The national future teacher movement grew out of the Horace Mann Centennial in 1931, when it was established by the NEA assembly. The Mary MacDonald Future Teachers of America is affiliated with both the NEA and MEA.
