Mm. MOWiflwwnm raB My coming to Wake Forest four years ago was an investment in terms of time, money, and expectations I came to get a good education — one that would not |ust begin and end with the covers of a book Looking back now with the perspective of a Senior. I know I came to the right school. I have found that Wake Forest, although a small denominational university, has a lot to offer. The prevailing climate here is academic I think that two basic factors are responsible for the emphasis on learning: quality and size The professors are an extremely intelligent group, and the school attracts the best stu- dents And unlike the mega-universities of our day. Wake Forest has preserved its unique and traditional student- professor relationship I also sense that the general trend here is toward student self-expression as seen in the growing emphasis on independent study and seminars Because of the advantage of its small size and high quality. Wake Forest has greater freedom to experiment academically, and I am encouraged to see it doing so. I have found that the ingredients for sound educational development are here. They need only to be grasped by the moti- vated students But in these four years, there has been time for other things too. Most schools our size have nowhere near the scope of Wake Forest It is good that there is an emphasis here on athletics, particularly on intercollegiate sports With the construction of Groves Stadium, the university has demonstrated that athletics will be a vital feature of its total education program I am glad that Wake Forest made this decision, for athletics can serve the purposes of the school in many respects I would have to say that the highlight of my college career was following the foot- ball team, game by game, to the first A.C.C. Football Championship in our history In watching that team, all Wake Foresters learned something about struggle and success; in short, a lesson in life itself. This is the important function that sports serve The scope of Wake Forest extends beyond books and ballgames. however, to a wide range of student activities By participating in and contributing to various organizations, the student is afforded the opportunity to round out his education Probably the best preparation I have gained for success in life has been that of working on common problems with other people in the Student Government I have also taken note of the campus ' renewed emphasis on culture There are the top quality concerts, art exhibits, lectures, and a film series rated No. 1 in the nation Our theater facilities are probably as poor as those of any major college I recognize, though, that this is because of a lack of funds for a new building, not because of indifference on the part of the university toward the develop- ment of the fine arts. Yet despite this handicap, the University Theater brings forth productions of professional quality to a receptive campus The poor facilities are overshadowed by the interest, cooperation, and dedication of students and faculty alike Such dedication, in all areas, is an essential tradition at Wake Forest But more than anything else, it is the people who make Wake Forest. I will long recall the Saturday afternoon games, the big weekends, the concert, and even the classes; but it is the friendship of this campus which has meant the most to me The administration, the faculty, and the students have all made friendliness a well-known tradition at Wake Forest Some say that college is merely training for life; at Wake, college is life itself I will always feel a sense of satisfaction and pride when I tell someone that I went to school at Wake Forest And I will be dis- appointed if the school fails to preserve her distinctive character and her traditions I will be equally disappointed if she fails to build for the future on the solid foundations of her past that have made Wake Forest a university deserving of the appreciation and support of her students. STC KKB The historical perspective that is immediately applied by an administrator to an evaluation of this institution by a student serves as an excuse for the present trustee inflicted stagnation that is optimistically dubbed — gradual change. The historical perspective simply means that the present state of affairs is judged acceptable when con- sidering the past. Changes that are called experimental here are after the fact at the campuses that experimented with them five and ten years ago. The hope of complete change and an elevation of our anachronistic social and academic rules to the level of comparable institutions have completely vanished from students ' minds. The trustees have successfully and permanently discouraged students with their infrequent, but dictatorial ultimatums shrouded in visions of moral responsibility and philanthropy. As a result of this consistent action by the trustees, the Wake Forest community, once held together by compulsory chapel, has finally dissolved and been replaced by splinter groups. Stagnation has set in because hope for change has vanished, and a life style has been established external to that which was once University oriented. The actualization of potential and the conflict between academic and scholarly pursuits are closely related. The abundant professorial potential that adorns catalogues and brochures seldom materializes inside or outside of class. Too frequently professors fail to impart knowledge that they obviously have and students fail to demand the utmost from their profs. The failure to communicate results from student and faculty apathy. This University is preoccupied with academics, not scholasticism, and the dream of academic excellence descends on the faculty and then to the students by way of fear. Scholarly pursuit does not rise soul-like from academic preoccupation. Learning is sacrificed for grades too often, and neither the faculty, nor the students, benefit from their contact. The desire to learn is extinguished by the time a student has completed his freshman year. In four years at the University it is very easy to never change. Students come here from middle class homes, better than average high school backgrounds, and with stable social attitudes. They leave with only mild adapta- tions. The University system perpetuates the status quo. and students ' minds and attitudes are merely the products of osmosis. The emphasis is not on learning, but on maintaining satisfactory grades. Wake Forest is what you make it or what it makes you. The choice is up to the Student. The facilities are available to all students, but the motiva- tion is self-established. ' Farewell to you and the youth I have spent with you. It was but yesterday we met in a dream. You have sung to me in my a oneness, and I of your long- ings have built a tower in the sky. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song. And if our hands should meet in another dream, we shall build another tower in the sky. Kahlil Gibran THE PROPHET li :- r-, m KuS nUBtSm ■■: (:
