Jk m.:: :.i%i A FTER studying for some five years at Wake Forest, Yates and his friends began negotiations with the Baptist Foreign Mission Board located at Richmond Rev J, B Taylor was then Secretary of the Board The seemingly poor health of Yates for a time delayed his progress, but soon his health was regained. His doctor was doubtful at one time whether he could remain on the field more than three years at the most, but as we know it was 43 not 3 that he labored in China, and even at the age of 61 he was able to say, I am as strong as o Hercules and as erect as a Belvedere. Yates was naturally robust and healthy, being well over six feet tall, and so by the latter port of 1846 he was completely recovered He made a personal appearance before the Board, and so struck were they by his intelligence and demeanor that he was promptly accepted as a missionary.
