1 DEDICATIO i Ronald B. Mack, M.D. L Anyone who believes that Renaissance men do not exist today obviously has not met Ronald Mack, M.D. A physician, an author, a scholar, and a teacher, Dr. Mack is a man admired for his dedication and hard work. He is loved by his students for his capti- vating sense of humor. His greatest talent, however, is the ability to take otherwise dry material and bring it to life so that learning becomes easy and pleasurable. Dr. Mack has strong roots in his home state of Illinois. After spending his younger days in Chicago, he entered the Navy and served as a Pharmacists Mate Third Class. He later returned to Chicago and earned his B.S. and M.D. from Loyola University, graduating in 1957. Internship at Cook County hospi- tal and residency in Pediatrics at Loyola followed. In 1957, Dr. Mack entered private practice. He did some moonlighting during this time, but not at the local Emergency room. 1Good positions were hard to find!J Rather, he served as the Pediatric Consultant for Primates at the Brookfield Zoo. From 1972 to 1975, Dr. Mack served as the Academic Director and Chairman of the Division of Pediatrics of Mac Neal Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. Also during these years Dr. Mack and his wife Marcia were rais- ing their four children. In 1975. Dr. Mack came to Winston-Salem. He worked with the Physician Assistant training program for a year and a half. Then he assumed his present position with Bowman Gray, teaching at Reynold's Health Center. It is there that he X. H! :W ' : ' -fgf!'f wt' ,, . . , l' .B -, 1 4' ' t. .4 ' . i flourishes making the mundane fascinating for us, his students. He comes in contact with every student who goes through Bowman Gray, guiding us through pediatric evaluation and diagnosis, as well as teaching us to assume nothing. In additon to his work in Pediatrics, Dr. Mack pursues a strong interest in toxicology. This interest combines with a f1air for writing, and a knowledge of history, the arts, and literature. The end product of this is a series of articles on poisoning and drug abuse which are both informative and entertaining. These are published regulary in fha North Carolimz fl'Ied1'nzf jonrmzf and Confenlpommi Petfialrzrx. Dr, Mack's activities extend beyond the borders of Winston-Salem. He is one of six members of the Committee of Accident and Poison Prevention ofthe American Academy of Pediatrics. He is the Chairman of the N.C. Medical Society's Committee on Drug Abuse and Pharmacy, as well as Chairman of the Committee on Accidents and Childhood Poisoning of the N.C. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also involved with the American Association of Poison Control Centers, and is a reviewer for Peu'1L11rz11i. Dr. Mack has received numerous honors in the past, including the Clinical Teaching Excellence Award given by the medical students and the Teacher of the Year Award given by the P.A. students. The Class of 1986 is proud to add to those laurels the dedication of the year's edition of the Gmri' Muner. We salute you. 'm
