SPECIAL RECOGNITION Richard Janeway M.D. Richard Janeway, M.D., has served as Dean of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University for the last 14 years. Under Dr. Janeway's leadership, the school's faculty has more than doubled in number, research grants have increased dramatically, and the school has achieved a national reputation for excellence. In the preceding 1985-86 academic year, Dr. Janeway was named Executive Dean and Chief Executive Officer of the medical school. Dr. Fairfield Goodale subsequently assumed the position of Dean. Dr. Janeway, a native of California, holds an A.B. degree from Colgate University and an M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also did his internship. Following military service, Dr. Janeway came to Bowman Gray as a National In- stitute of Health trainee, and completed his residency in neurology in 1966. Dr. Janeway was C1 named the Markle Scholar for the years 1968 to 1972. During this time he progressed from assistant professor to full professor in neurology. In 1971 Dr. Janeway succeeded Dr. Manson Meads as Dean ofthe medical school. Dr. Janeway is active on a national level in plan- ning and improving health care delivery and medi- cal education. He continues to be heavily involved with the AAMC, having served as Chairman of that body from 1984 to 1985. Since 1983, Dr. Janeway has been Vice President for Health Affairs for Wake Forest University. In this capacity and as Executive Dean, Dr. Janeway's leadership will still be felt as he guides this institu- tion and keeps it on the cutting edge of medical practice. We, the students of Bowman Gray, offer our thanks, our appreciation, and our respect for a job well done.
