ns., 5' J' J 4... Dr. Karl Patrick Ober is a respected and well-honored man. His congenial, easy-going style and sense of humor have made him a favorite lecturer for the Bowman Gray School of Medicine Class of 1985. Evidence of his appeal and his teaching skills include the Award in Teaching Excellence - Iinical Teaching. which he received in 1983, and the Faculty Award for Achievement - Teaching Excellence, which he received in 1984. Traditionally, the dedication of the Gray Matter goes to a faculty member demonstrating continued excellence in teaching and dedication to students. With this in mind, the Class of 1985 nominated and elected Dr, Ober as the recipient ot the 1985 Gray Matter dedication. Karl Patrick Ober was born in Ames, Iowa on April 7, 1949. He received his M.D. degree in 1974 from the University of Florida after earning a B.S. degree with high honors in 1970 from the Depanment of Bio-chemistry at Michigan State University. At the North Carolina Baptist Hospital QNCBHJ he completed not only his residency training in Internal Medicine Q1 974-761 but also his fellow- ship in Endocrinology C1977-783. Accordingly, he is certi- fied by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Appointed as an Instructor in Medicine at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine fBGSMl in 1977, Dr. Ober rose to the level of Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1979. That same year he became Director of the Endocrine Clinic at the NCBH and was named a Medical Foundation Scholar at the BGSM. As mentioned above, Dr. Ober received in 1984 the Faculty Award for Achievement - Teaching Excellence, which is the highest award given to a member of the Bowman Gray faculty. He is the 12th recipient of this award, which includes an engraved plaque and a monet- ary prize to be used toward the recipients further aca- DEDICATION DR. PATRICK OBER .-1' - .. I l ,L A ,' if it-M demic enrichment. Winners of the award are selected by a committee made up of representatives of the medical school administration, academic faculty and student body. Dr. Ober is actively involved with medical student edu- cation. ln the past he has spoken to Freshmen students in the Clinical Scholars lecture series. His lectures to Soph- omore medical students include the topics of Endocrinolo- QY, the adrenal cortex, and adrenal physiology. For the Juniors he holds seminars on managing diabetic ketoaci- dosis as well as on the routine management of insulin dosing in diabetics. ln addition to his teaching and patient care activities, Dr. Ober conducts research and has published articles concerning: Jodbasedow and thyrotoxic periodic para- lysisg Cation and anion transport in intact erythrocytes, and Spironolactone therapy for hirsutism in hyperan- drogenic women. Dr. Ober lives with his wife and two children in Clem- mons, North Carolina. Congratulations, Dr. Ober, and thank you for your dedication. 3
