Most faculty members and department chairmen at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine CBGSMJ have chosen to maintain long tenures, as have the medical school deans. Dr. Coy C. Carpenter, who engineered the school's move from the town of Wake Forest, was dean from 1936 to 1963. Succeeding him, Dr. Manson Meads held the post from 1963 to 1971. Appointed in 1971, Dr. Richard Janeway is the current dean of the medical school. All of the deans have been on faculty staff at the BGSM prior to their appointment as dean and Drs. Carpenter and Meads have worked actively in the medical center following retirement. Such characteristics of commitment and long service are unusual among medical school chairmen and deans. For BGSM this leadership has led to a far-sighted vision J .L A ' , 1 S n --S2.,b-xt, 'AA- .- f' In I ,- k -X 1. 'L 1 'tics I If Q NX f 'jf'-v V 1, -E7 4 'es F Y WS' , i K . Je: 53? From the modest beginnings of two widely separated institutions has grown a large medical center. The former Wake Forest Medical Depart- ment, enrolling 35 students in two classes, is now a well-recognized four- year medical school, enrolling 432 students. The hospital has similarly expanded, now holdin over 700 beds. The end of the growt is not in sight. Already planned is a second patient tower and a vertical addition to the Hanes Building. We may not yet see the evidence ofthe buildings to come, buttheir construction is foreshadowed by the expansion of the parking facilities around the Medical Center. -n11v1:Il Q10 above: This artists rendition shows the planned 13-story patient tower, located be- in- 'J 4 ',.' e VI S- .-.gl 5 tween the Reynolds Tower and the Power Plant, where the loading dock is now located. x juli A causeway will connect from the elevator lobby ofthe new tower to the middle ofthe 1 '-v.
