Most faculty members and department chairmen at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine CBGSMJ have chosen to maintain long tenures, as have the medical school deans. Dr. Coy C. Carpenter, who engineered the school's move from the town of Wake Forest, was dean from 1936 to 1963. Succeeding him, Dr. Manson Meads held the post from 1963 to 1971. Appointed in 1971, Dr. Richard Janeway is the current dean of the medical school. All of the deans have been on faculty staff at the BGSM prior to their appointment as dean and Drs. Carpenter and Meads have worked actively in the medical center following retirement. Such characteristics of commitment and long service are unusual among medical school chairmen and deans. Despite the financial constraints during the schools first decade, the original bequest of RJR stock tnow valued at several million dollarsl was retained without liquidating a single share. The North Carolina Baptist Hospital also experienced hardships. Chartered to conduct business primarily ltfor the benefit of the sick and needy and to Hsubordinate every other activity and purpose to reach that end , the hospital was frequently overladen with nonpaying pa- tients. The South Wing, built under the urging and support of the faculty physicians, was primarily to create room for full-paying, private-patient admissions, which streng- thened the NCBH. above: The Flesearch Building and the Vivarium Extension under construction, on the west end of the medical school, are shown here around 1961.
